Question/Comment:

I have recently started taking this med, and can only take it at night because I makes me sooo sleepy. I take it with another med, Trazadone, and the two together make you feel sedated. My doc told me to only take this med when I feel I need it because of the sedation feeling. Of course if you can only take it at night, why bother, since the pain only happens during the day.

36 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

The reason the drug is taken at night is to get you to deep sleep where the body does most healing due to deep sleep. Yes it does cause my heart fluttering at times so I no longer take it and yes on the sedation.

Answer/Reply:

When I initially tried this medication, it made me whoozy, too. I was prescribed 30 mg a day, taking 10 mg three time a day. I couldn't handle the whooziness at all. So I began to take 10 mg at night and that worked. When I get up in the mornings, I don't feel so tight. If I take another pill it's after I'm home for the night. Don't give up.

56 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

It knocks me out too. I can only take it at night. As for the heart fluttering that some are mentioning I am too knocked out to even notice if it happens.

I have been on this for a very long time and will be forever (work related now on SSDI). Had the best surgeon in the NW ( I don't blame him but L&I for dragging their feet for years). Yes it makes me sleep but what ever small comfort I get from it is well worth it. Suppose to take 3 times a day but only take 1 early afternoon and 2 at night.

I also recently was prescribed this med. It made me feel slightly sleepy so I also decided to take it at night time. I guess as far as the pain is concerned it has not had time to really get into my system (because the pain is still in my neck, not so much as the back at times). My problem is the constipation. It is HORRIBLE!!! I guess I'll have to add another medication to the list...LAXATIVE/ENEMA. Don't you just love it....

54 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Trazadone alone makes me very sleepy. I have hoarded the last ones for nights I have to sleep and can't.

Answer/Reply:

I have been taking Lyrica 100 mg twice a day, for about 3 years. You have to take it at the same time (or close) everyday. It made me sleepy for about two weeks. My doctor told me it could take up to three weeks for this med to get into your system and start working. Due to the depression that fibro causes, she also put me on Trazadone, but to take before bedtime because this is the medicine that helps you to sleep. I take my lyrica around 7 am and the second dose around 6 pm. Eating will help, but you may just need to live with the sleepiness for a week or two. But you do need to stop taking them together and see what happens. Hope this will help, but giving lyrica a good trial run was worth the side effects in the long run because I no longer suffer with any and it has helped my daily pain.

Question/Comment:

I found this drug to cause rapid heartbeat even when taken at night. It does help with the migraines, but it is not worth it.

50 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have taken this med everyday for the last 3 years and do not know what I would do without it. It has taken the constant pain in my back down to a bearable level. I have not noticed a rapid heartbeat.

Answer/Reply:

I have been taking flexeril 10 MG 3X a day for a few year and the only thing that I have really noticed is the blurry vision and I am dragging my feet a lot. But as for it making me tired it does not do that anymore; I guess you get used to it after awhile.

I have Reflux Sympathatic Dystrophy (RSD) in my feet and legs, and Fibromyalgia to boot, so I'm experienced with quite a few pain-killers. The Cyclobenzaprine didn't do well at first, but I think I was taking too much of it them. Now, I take 2 at about 7 pm and 2 at bedtime around 10 pm. (but that's what "I" do, so I don't mean that 'you" should without your doctor knowing. I was on Methadone for about 4 years, until it stopping working well. They then perscribed Fentynal patches, which did nothing for my pain, even though they're pretty strong. I was up to three patches every 3 days, and still no help with my pain. Now I'm being perscribed Morphine and Oxycodone, switching them each time I take them, which is every 3 hours. Morphine at 8, Oxycodone at 11, Morphine at 2....and so on. This schedule started this past Monday, and it seems to be working better than anything they've tried, so Praise the Lord! RSD is so very painful, and it's so hard to control. If interested, go to RSDhope.com to learn more about RSD.
Thanx for listening. Hope something works for you. May God bless, Susan, a 52-year-old married woman from Missouri USA

Question/Comment:

I've been taking this medication for a long time. I haven't seen the "excessive sedation" part of the problem, but I had no idea about the potential side effects, especially the esophageal or stomach problems that can occur by taking it along with Klor-Con (which I must take due to potassium deficiency). This very much concerns me, because I also take Mobic, which can cause stomach bleeding and gastric ulcers and I always have this horrible reflux/heartburn. I don't want to discontinue any of these medications, as they all do what they are intended to do and when I have been forced, at various times, to discontinue them for some period of time, I have noticed a severe increase in the symptoms they are keeping in abeyance. However, I do wish I had been told about the potential side-effects up front so I could have discussed other options or ways to help reduce these potential problems.

Question/Comment:

I was prescribed this medication to control my muscle spasms along with baclofen and robaxin. I recently discovered that these medications contradict eachother and by taking them at the same time of the others i could have accidentally overdose. I wish that my physician would have warned me about these side affects when he prescribed them to me. Good thing im going to school for nursing or i never would have found this information out.

Question/Comment:

I don't like this drug. I tried taking it for muscle spasms in my back and neck. It didn't help much. It didn't make me sleepy. It DID severely increase the Restless Leg Syndrome symptoms, which I have had for 30+ years, to a nearly intolerable level. It happened every time I took more than one pill in any three or four day period.I can't imagine taking it for RLS

55 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I suffer with RLS at times, never diagnosed. I started the flexaril, 4 days ago. I thought I was going bonkers one night with extreme agitation, particularly my legs, and last night I awoke every hour on the hour. I also was having feelings of sadness and the blues all weekend. I see that it also is only recommended for a 2-3 week trial. I was supposed to get skelaxin, but my PCP prescribed Flexaril.

Question/Comment:

I did not like this drug as I was groggy the next day even if i took it 4 hrs before going to bed and I did not feel as tho it helped my neck pain much (even tried taking half of a 10 mg- a pain to do with a scissor...) I now take periodically a different drug : Meprobamate 400 mg - it works quicker and no grogginess the next day - as far as how safe any of hese drugs are ..let's face it no drugs are good but what is our quility of life if we suffer in pain??? yes, liver and kidneys are affected in that they have to process all these chemicals in the drugs just like alcohol or other drugs so try to limit where we can

Question/Comment:

Apparently, my primary has made a huge mistake I take lexapro and zyrtec and for days now I have been wiped out with fatigue and drowsiness. I decided to take a look at the medicines and apparently this combination is deadly. I am commenting because alot of times we take the medicine that the doctor prescribes without questioning. I am lucky this time because I am the curious type but how many others don't question. This situation could be a lot worse. Now I know what I have to stop taking.

Answer/Reply:

It is interesting to read everyones' reactions to the drugs. I take topamax, ativan, and flexeril and still try to function. It is very frustrating trying to remember words, people's names, and other day to day items. I have no one doctor or pharmacist who monitors the drugs I take and the effects they combine to have one me. No one wants the responsibility.

I suffer with Migrane headaches, I was given this to take, by trial and error I found that taking this at night verses in the morning I can get a full nights sleep and the migranes are happening less often However if I take it during the morning, I am done for the day unless all I want to do is stare at the wall. It relaxes my muscles...including my mind.

Question/Comment:

can I take Neurontin 500 along with Flexeril at bedtime for my fibromyalgia?

57yrs old female

59 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

yep

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Yes, I took 300 mg of Neurotin sometimes 600 mg at bedtime along with 20 mg of Flexeril. (hope Im spelling his right). I also suffer from Fibromyalgia. My Dr. put me on a combination of the Neurotin, Flexerll, and Welbutrin XL 300 mg. to start off. At first I had a difference of day and night. I was so pleased with the results. The problem was if I didn't take one of any, then it was like I didn't take any at all. Over the course of 6 months the Welbutrin was increased and the effectiveness again was terrific. After 2 years and the max dosage of Welbutrin 450mg. It is only about 50 % effective as it once was. We tried other drugs in the same class but it was not effective at all and the side effects were awful. My Dr's tell me to be happy as it could be and has been worse. It's hard for me to swallow. I am constantly looking for hope out there. You shouldn't be worried about the combination. If you are to tired the next day try taking less mg. As my Dr. say something is better han nothing and nothing is was too mush to bare. Hang in there an best of luck to you.

Question/Comment:

I take Flexeril for muscle spasms but can't even finish a sentence on them. do you have any suggestions on something else I might ask my primary about? thanks, 50 yr old with degen discs in 3,4,5 lumbar with spinal stenosis.

51 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I take cyclobenzaprine for Fibromyalgia. I find that if I take it at bedtime, I wake up and can actually move, and get out of bed. And, it helps me sleep. So, I get two benefits from one prescription. But, you should always ask your doctor before changing your medication or dosage. Hope this will help.

Question/Comment:

Is there or what meds can I take in place of my current ones to have less side effects?

Question/Comment:

Flexeril is a very important drug for me since, I had severe allergic reaction to other muscle relaxants.

61 year old Female

Question/Comment:

Is it true that prolonged use of cyclobenzaprine (flexeril) can cause memory loss?

I have been taking it since around 1998 for bulging discs and muscle strain in my neck due to whiplash. I have been told that long-term use is not good - I am under my doctor's watchful eye - I see him about every 4 months to monitor my cholesterol.

I was surprised - but pleased to see that this med is often used for restless leg syndrome - which is a concern being that I'm on cholesterol meds that cause muscle pain and spasms sometimes.

I was taking 10mg at bed - now I often can take 5 mg - depends on the day, how active I am - if I have any caffeine which aggravates arthritis.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

That is way too much mixing of medications for 1 person. You need to seek a Dr to help you detox.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

OMG and you can still remember all of that? ha ha That's amazing. But, my husband takes alot of medicines too. I can tell when he has added something to the mix, because he acts funny -- I mean different. I hate taking drugs of any kind, but sometimes we just have to have them. I take 2 effexor XR (total 300 mg) and 2 cyclobenzaprine at bedtime (total 20 mg), and it doesn't affect me at all sometimes. But, when I haven't had much sleep or I have done alot that day, it helps me to sleep. Cyclobenzaprine and Effexor are my WONDER drugs!!! I don't know what I would do without them. I've tried, but I can't. Who/whom ever invented them have my blessings!! I can't thank them enough.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Honey, you are taking way to much pain/muscle relaxants/benzos/sleep medication.

I am amazed you can function and you must sleep like the dead.

Flexeril, ativan, Lunesta, xanax, vicodin, soma and the fentanyl are serious drugs. If one doctor is prescribing all these meds she is negligent in her care. You could overdose on all these meds and if you stop taking all of them at once you could, and most likely would, have a seizure and die. I am assuming you have a chronic pain condition. A morphine pump or methodone might be the perferable way to go as they can be closely monitored and you would not OD and they might releive your pain better. If you have a pain specialist where you live you should see one. I wish you all the best.

Answer/Reply:

I'm not sure about the memory loss, so ask your doctor. If your're still worried about it ask your doctor about changing to Robaxin for your back pain. I switch off on the two about every other year so that I won't become addicted to either one. I've had 3 back surgeries because of Degenerative Disc Disease (where the discs disolve and I have bone sitting on bone and most of the time pinching the nerve).

About your restless leg syndrome....watch this carefully. Have your doctor check you kidney function as well as RLS is one of the main symptoms of kidney disease. I tried many, many meds before I saw a doctor at UNC in Chapel Hill, NC. We tried the drug "Neurontin" (which can be used for other problems), but finally, after suffering through 5 years of Dialysis after Kidney failure and crying all night because my legs kept tingling and moving, this drug, and only this drug was the key to my salvation of this problem. I wrote an article for the RLS foundation newsletter back in 1998 about Neurontin associated with RLS. At the time Neurontin was not widely used as it is today for RLS and the editor found my story to be quite enlightening and turned out it helped many people with RLS.

Good luck. I hope I've been of some help to you.

P.S. I finally got rid of RLS altogether. I had a double Kidney Transplant in Oct. 2000 and have been RLS free ever since.

i AM KNOW HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY BLADDER CAN YOU TELL ME HOW YOU FOUND OUT OUT ABOUT YOUR KIDEYS? IAM IN SO MUCH PAIN. I AM TRYING TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF MY PROBLEMS. MY STOMACH IS ENLARGED. THANK YOU

39 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

If your stomach is enlarged, it could be pressing on your bladder. And, around your age, sometimes, women's bladders drop and have to be tacked back up into place. I wouldn't worry too much. Just see a urologist, or your family doctor. I'm sorry about your pain. Hang in there, and see your doctor. I'm sure there is a simple solution.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I've been taking this medication for years and do not notice any problems. It probably can, if it is combined with other medicines. But, when/if you stop taking it, you will notice that you will probably get your sharp memory back. It is a side effect of the drug to make you in a groggy/sedative state. I would talk to my doctor about it and see if you can decrease the dosage, or take it at bedtime and see how you do. Remember: Always ask your doctor before changing your medicines. :)

Question/Comment:

I was prescribed this medicine for chest muscle pain and it's the only thing that really works. Sometimes I will take the Tylnol PM and that works too ONLY if my chest pain is not too bad but when it really gets bad that I can't stand it, I take the cyclobenzaprine and poof! all the pain is gone and I get a good nights sleep! :-) ONLY USE AS PRESCRIBED.

50 year old Female

Question/Comment:

This medicine has helped me to some degree with Fibromyalgia. I can say that it helps me to get a more restorative sleep at night. I suffer from Alpha Intrusion and there has been nothing to help me get more restored sleep in years. I take Flexeril with Lyrica and Tramadol and I manage to feel more rested after sleeping now. Thank you for these medicines, without them I would still be so darn tired and a commplete wreck. FYI, to those that have asked if it's a narcotic, it is NOT a narcotic.

33 year old Female

Question/Comment:

Has anyone had any issues with the flexeril causing excessive drowsyness, when used with narcotics?

I had been having bouts of near narcolepsy, or almost sleepwalking, while taking this and methadone, I had tried methadone before with a different pain doctor. But I was having episodes where I would be sitting there, and then be in a dream, only to be wakened when I physically tried to act out those dreams. I was also having problems with the constipation from the methadone exacerbating my reflux, so I had to discontinue it, and I don't seem to be having the same sort of reaction with my Norco. Has anyone else had this happen?

33 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

Flexeril -- when taken with narcotics -- will have an amplified affect on you. Extremely. You need to not mix those two types of medication: muscle relaxant (RELAXANT) and narcotics (many of which already have a SEDATING effect). So you're pretty much putting yourself out!

This is what appears on drugs.com:

Flexeril can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Flexeril. Cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety can add to sleepiness caused by Flexeril. Tell your doctor if you regularly use any of these medicines, or any other muscle relaxer.

We specialize in FMS treatment where I work. In addition, I take this medication three times a day for fibromyalgia, and it has been a Godsend to me.
