Answer/Reply:
Hi, I'm also your age and have been taking Atenolol for about 2 wks now. Why do you think one should seek alternative methods? I'm having a very low pulse with this drug, but my BP has still gone up quite high. I feel lousy and I'm not sleeping well. I'm hypothyroid too so I'm sure that doesn't help. I can't seem to find a Thyroid med right for me either. I'm very sensitive to drugs. I feel for anyone that has these issues.

I'm a 69 year old male and my doctor has prescribed 12.5 mg of Tenormin every other day for a mitral valve condition. I am also hypothyroid and a type 1 diabetic on insulin injections. Ever since starting the Tenormin and the 300 daily mg of Diltiazem my Dr. prescribed, I sometimes get difficulty breathing and dizzy spells when I stand up. Does anyone else out there experience these symptoms? To the 39 yr. old woman loking for a better medicine to control her hypothyroidism, have you asked your Dr. about Cytomel? It's worked great for me for 35 yrs.

I have been on tenormin for more than 10 years. Side effects mentioned above developed a few months ago. I will need to consult my doctor about changing to a new medication soon. Otherwise, it has been pretty good for me.

Question/Comment:
It seems to work for me. My symptoms are well controlled and I only have "serious" occurrences very rarely. I believe Atenolol is working as represented and I would recommend it to someone with similar symptoms as I.

Question/Comment:
I have only been taking Diazepam for about 4 months, but I've been taking Benzodiasapins for years. I've also been taking Atenolol for years. Some of the Benzodiasapam family include,Zanax,"Ativan-Lorazapam,not sure of spelling",Colonapine. I've been taking Atenolo for several years. Only in the last couple of weeks have I had slight itching of skin and slight hot flashes which I think is a side affect of Pravastatin 40MG once daily started on 4-15-08,or a side affect of increase in dosage of Niiaspan Tab ER.

I have been taiking clonazopam for 13 years. My hair is starting to fall out and they are no longer effective on me. Any feed back would be appreciated.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Let your MD/OD know about the itching and hot flashes, but these are side effects of the Niaspan as with niacin. According to Dr. Weil, this is not a bad thing and the non-flushing niacin availabe in stores is not as effective as the niacin that causes the flushing.
What I find helpful to stop the itching/flushing/hot flashies it to make sure I have something in my stomach before I take the Niaspan. When I take it on an empty stomach I am always awaken about 3-5 hours after taking it with the itching, flushing, etc. and it can last up to 45 minutes. I then eat a bunch of crackers to get something back in my stomach and drink water or juice. Also, I take it at night so if the flushing happens it's not while I'm at work.

Question/Comment:
Atenolol came up as a 4 on my list of drugs because of a potential conflict with Tizanidine which I take to help muscle pain at night. I take 25 mg of Atenolol daily. I can't seem to identify from the information here what the potential negative interaction could be. Firstly, can anyone tell me what that might be and second, how do you navigate here to get that kind of info. Thanks

To see any interactions that you may have, you need to first log in to your iGuard profile which you can do through the main page at www.iguard.org. Enter your email address and the password that you chose for your iGuard account. Once you successfully do this, you will see your drug list on the left hand side. You can then click on any of your drugs and once you do this, you will see an orange box that will state any interactions that exist due to your health profile or any other drugs that you may be taking.

I also take atenolol and zanaflex. I take them together at night to help me sleep due to fibromyalgia. I have not noticed any side effects. I wish it would say what kind of side effects could be expected from the interaction of these.

Question/Comment:
I take Atenolol 25mg daily for HBP and Tachycardia. Is it common to have my fingers/hands and toes/feet feel cold all the time? I also have involuntary trembling in my hands on occasion. Please help me understand, so I can discuss with my doctor.

Posted: 2008-02-14 18:19:23
iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
We have not had any reports of cold fingers/toes before with atenolol - either through iGuard, or through information available from clinical trials. In addition, atenolol is actually sometimes used (not approved) for reducing tremor. If you are experiencing these symptoms and your blood pressure is now normal, it is worth discussing them with your doctor for further investigation.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Have a look in the orange box near the top of this page - if you are logged in, it should have an explanation of why your risk rating may be higher than average... this could be due to interactions with your medications, or other risk factors that you have identified in your health profile.

Question/Comment:
I have Marfans syndrome. Marfans syndrome is a hereditary heart disease that effects the size of your aorta. Marfans has a laundry list of problems that go along with it and every person with Marfans has different symptoms including scoliosis, hearing problems, poor vision, loose joints, tmj, abnormal height (tall with long limbs and fingers) protruding breast bone etc. I have been on Atenolol since I was 18 months old. I take it to keep my blood pressure low and keep the strain off of my heart. I have had relatively few side effects from Atenolol, but one problem I do have is if I don't take it as soon as I wake up my heart pounds hard and I get short of breath and extremely light headed, sometimes to the point of blacking out. I take 100mg once a day. I would be very interested in talking to anyone with Marfans.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
I have not been diagnosed with Marfan's but experience the same reactions if I do not take my 50mg every morning. It is prescribed to regulate my heart rate which can fly to 120 bpm unexpectedly. Some evenings I wonder if I should take another dose because I can feel my heart pounding rapidly and even feel it in my eyes. An odd coincidence.. I have rather long arms and long piano-player fingers........

My two sons and I also have Marfan Syndrome. I am 56 years old and my two sons are 32 and 23 years old. My youngest son and I have both taken atenolol for a long time. I recently stopped taking it and I have had a number of rebound effects as a result. It has now been two weeks since my last dose and I am still experiencing side effects.
Both of my sons have had multiple surgeries but up till now I have been able to avoid the knife.
I have connections at Stanford, OHSU, Ochsner, and Baylor Medical school. My wife has been working for a number of years for the NMF.
Please feel free to contact me at butterburr@yahoo.com. My name is Tom.

Question/Comment:
I was recently taken off a sulfa drug I had taken for over a year for high blood pressure because it caused me to get dangerously high potassium levels. My Atenolol 25 MG tablet was increased from 1/2 tablet a day to l tablet a day to help reduce my blood pressure. This change took place two weeks ago and I am now having trouble with swelling in my feet and ankles and have puffiness up to my knees at times. The only other drug I take is Simvastatin 80 MG. The dose is 1/2 tablet a day. There is no recent change in the dosage of this drug. Since I can no longer take any sulfa drugs, do you have any suggestions to reduce or eliminate the swelling? Is the swelling dangerous? (Additionally, I take one 325 MG aspirin a day and two Tums. I take one Tums morning and one at night.) Thank you for your help.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Ankle puffiness is a side effect that can occur with some blood pressure treatments, but the puffiness up to your knees probably requires more investigation. It is definitely worth making your doctor aware that the swelling/puffiness can go up to your knees, especially if it only started after your atenolol dose was increased. Also, let them know if you can sleep lying flat, or need pillows propping you up.

I am a 73 year old female, I was prescribed Tenormin for Afib and high blood pressure.
After having two ablations, my Afib is under control so I am taking this drug in combination with dyazide for my high blood pressure. I have difficulty falling asleep, cold blue toes and extremely dry mouth, which I believe are all side effects from Atenolol.
