Question/Comment:

I'm 33 and have been on Atenolol for about 10 years now and my hair is also thinning. However, my mom's hair is thinning extremely bad, but she is on a different med. Curious to know if this is what is causing it. It really does become a problem. I have a low self esteem because of it.

does antenolol cause hair loss

Answer/Reply:

Have you had your thyroid checked? One of the first signs that my thyroid levels are off is my hair starts falling out. That tells me my meds need to be adjusted. I am on antenelol for rapid heart rate due to hyper thyroid disease however the thining hair can also be caused by hypo thiroidism. As soon as I get my thyroid levels under control my hair grows back.

I am 45 and have been on atenolol apprx 7 years and I also have experienced hair loss. I now wear a wig. Hair loss is listed on the side effects list for this drug.

Answer/Reply:

I am now experiencing the same thing. I wasn't sure if it was from the meds or not because it just recently started happening. I'm even experiencing the same symptoms the 69 year old male is experiencing with my toes and the numbness and tingling but like he says the more active you become during the day it lessens. Is this ok or not? I don't know. But, it works for my excelerated heartbeat and blood pressure. I haven't pased out in over 5 years. Female, 51.

Answer/Reply:

You may want to have yourself checked for something other than an adverse affect to your Atenenol (sorry if misspelled :) )I have taken this prescription for 7+ years for high blood pressure and have had no adverse affects. I started taking this along with another high blood pressure rx ( hydro . . something ~ not in front of me) that have worked wonderfully. Good luck!

I have been on Atenolol 50 mg for almost 20 yrs. I am 78 yrs.and have not any hair thinning problems.Hair thinning in most cases is hereditary.Hope this helps.

75 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I've been on Atenolol for about 5 years now for high blood pressure/irregular pressure. I've always had a very thick crop of hair until I went on this medication. My hair was falling out in copious amounts. I too thought it might be thyroid and had it checked out -- more than once -- by the doctor. They say they think it's hereditary--no one in the family has thin or thinning hair. I've reduced the amount of atenolol by 1/2 (I'm was taking 25 mg per day) and found my hair loss improved considerably.

56 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I, too, take atenolol and I, too, was losing alarming amounts of hair though I never related the two... Turns out it was my thyroid that was the cause. (Also caused very dry, scaly skin and a number of other problems) I now take Levothyroxin and the hair is growing back (lots of short little pieces show me that is so, and no more handfuls of hair falling out while washing or brushing)

Question/Comment:

I take 25 mg of Atenolol for high blood pressure. I have been on it 3 years. Recently my leg aches and swells -- don't know if this is a side effect of the med or not...has anyone else had this problem?

46 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My doc also gave me 25mg Atenolol. My blood pressure runs low, but my heart rate was still 128 today. I have only been taking the Atenolol to lower my heart rate (not working) about 6 months, but noticed the problems with my legs just a few days ago. I bought bananas, thinking low potassium, until I just read your post. Since my heart rate is still up, I am rethinking taking this further.

Thank you SO much for bringing this to my attention. My BP was only 96/54 today, which has always ran a perfect 112/72. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. I had not connected it, but will surelely google "atenolol legs" soon.

Good luck with your BP. My Dad is 82 and has always taken a spoonful of vinager daily and still takes no BP meds. I can't keep up with him! But YUCK. I hate vinager. lol.

I found our answers. Sorry I lost the web address, but here it is. Notice SIDE EFFECTS.

Generic Name: ATENOLOL

Pronunciation: (a ten' oh lole)

Trade Name(s): Aloten, Antipress, Atcardil, Atecard, Atelol, Aten, Atenex, Atenova, Atormin, Atpark, Beta, Betacard, Betadure, Betanol, Beten, Bidoten, Catenol, Eucard, Lakten-50, Lonol, Normolol, Pertenol, Telol, Tenase, Tenolol, Tenormin, Tensicard, Tensimin

Why it is prescribed: Atenolol is used to control high blood pressure and to prevent heart pain (angina).

When it is to be taken: Atenolol usually is taken once a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part that you do not understand. It is important that you take this medication regularly, because atenolol controls high blood pressure but does not cure it.

How it should be taken: Atenolol comes in the form of tablets. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose.

Special Instruction:
1. Do not stop taking atenolol without consulting your doctor. Stopping the medication abruptly can make your condition worse.
2. Your doctor may ask you to check your pulse (heart rate) daily and will tell you how rapid it should be. If your pulse is slower than it should be, contact your doctor about taking the drug that day. Your doctor may prescribe a low-salt or low sodium diet, tell you to stop smoking, and restrict your intake of alcohol.
3. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is near the time you are to take the next scheduled dose, omit the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.

Side Effects:
1. Lightheadedness and faintness can be seen when arising from a lying or sitting position. Get up slowly.
2. Dizziness, fatigue, depression, leg pain, nausea, diarrhea, cold hands and feet are rare. Contact your doctor if these symptoms are severe or persist.
3. Shortness of breath, wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of feet and lower legs, sudden weight gain, chest pain, slow or irregular pulse. Contact your doctor immediately.

Other Precautions:
1. Pregnant or breast-feeding women should inform their doctors.
2. Before taking atenolol, tell your doctor if you have a history of asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, or other lung disease; heart disease; diabetes; kidney disease; or thyroid problems.
3. Before you take atenolol, tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially reserprine and other high blood pressure medication.
4. Before having surgery, tell the doctor that you are taking atenolol. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Answer/Reply:

I take atenolol currently reduced to 25 mgs. I was feeling very tired and having dizzy spells too. When I went to the doctor he said the dosage of 100mg was too strong for me, so he lowered it to 25mg because the meds kept my BP too low.

The numbness of legs could be due to circulation problems or pinched nerves. Tell your doctor what you feel. My legs have been checked on two separate occasions-once you know what is causing the problem it is easier to deal with. Not knowing just causes more stress.

Breathless feeling is a definate side effect of this med, but so could lack of exercise and a myriad of other things like smoking, upper respiratory infection, lung issues. Please check with doctor and get a second opinion.

I also have the problem with achy legs. In addition to that my fingers feel like they are swelling and start getting a cold sweat. Does that happen to anybody else?

34 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Muscle pain and swelling are not typical symptoms of atenolol (Tenormin) - these side effects have been reported by less than 1% of iGuard members taking atenolol. Although rare, sweating has also been reported. There are many other possible explanations for these symptoms. If these symptoms continue to bother you, it is a good idea to follow up with your doctor to rule out other causes for these symptoms.

Answer/Reply:

I have taken this med for over Ten Years, and I had a Triple bypass more than 5 years ago.
I Have had swelling of My fingers and hands, then as I thought about it, I realized that I would let my Hands hang down, You know, being our age, if we don't keep our legs up, like in a recliner, they will swell. They call it edema. So, I changed this habit and have not had this problem again.
However, I do have the depression and Try to gear up for that.
My walking is very limited due to a spinal injury at a very young age. However, I get out in the Yard with Pleasure, using My Power Wheel chair and Cut the Grass. I get a heavy sweat in warm weather, but That is Very good. It helps to flush out many toxin's and Yes, I have muscle discomfort and leg aches. But, Overall I feel much better as I continue.
I also have a Heart Murmur from a calcified heart valve, which doesn't worry me nor do I allow it to stop My getting the exercise I need.
So, I say, Enjoy Your Life, Help others, it doesn't matter if they get around Better, It only matters to be beneficial and do the things You enjoy. The 12 hour Days of work are Gone, but My attitude is me. I'm going to keep it.

I have be taking Atenol 25 for 3 years now. I also have had leg swelling I didn't notice much until Doctor put me on Water pills, it seems to help. He said it would reduce water around the heart also therfore reducing blood pressure too. I was afraid to be without the atenolol as my faters family has a big history of heart attacks. My blood pressure has been down to 126/80 now but my right leg is causing me severe pain now. It comes and goes, sometimes I can't walk on it, Doctor said my knee was injured and gave me cream which seems to help. Never once did he say maybe the atenonol was the problem! I work on my feet so this is a major problem for me. I am calling my doctor today to see what she says!

Thanks for the info.

Question/Comment:

I take atenolol 100mg,lisinopril 40 mg,folic acid tablets, aspirin, triamt/hctz 37.5-25, for hypertension. I am having side effects of being tired almost all the time, have the worst taste in my mouth, feel nauseated alot. Are these med's causing these side effects. Blood pressure runs about 150/78 pulse is 48-52. Then other times I take BP and its 120/78. Will the folic acid tablets make me have this weird bitter taste in my mouth? Thanks for helping

63 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I get tired when I even take 1/2 of a 25 mg. atenolol and it also puts my pulse way down to 58 or 59. I feel this med is enough reason for trying to use natural supplements of Standard Process instead as I hate feeling tired too, but when you pulse is so low as ours is, I feel that is the reason for having no energy. I will take what Standard Process (Dr. West) advises for edema and see if that helps the bp before adding more supplements.

I take several medications: 3 meds for hypertension and 2 meds for cholesterol/trigylceride. I've taken these meds for approximately ten years. Atenolol is one of those list of meds. I've never had a problem. Also, I take ecotrin (coated aspirin). If you are taking aspirin and it's not "stomach" friendly I suggest you try ecotrin. My doctor recommends the low dose for me. Ask you doctor what strength he recommends for you. Carol M. New York

Hello, I am 59 yr. old female. I have a large amount of medication to take daily. I am on maximum doses of all my blood pressure pills. Every once in a while my blood pressure is stiil elevated. I am also diabetic with a few more health issues as well. I often feel depressed because I am on some many medications. Years ago I learned the hard way about cutting back on my doses without doctors permission. What can you do?? Follow doctors orders or end up with more problems. Life goes on but I still do not like taking so many different pills. I pray and it helps sometimes. I am telling anyone who will listen if you know your family medical conditions, try to eat healthy, exercise, & visit doctor yearly for physical even if you dont have health issues. Last but not least I take more medicine than my 83yr old mom.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I don't know if this will work for you but I have uncontrolled high blood pressure and it has affected my kidneys especially the trimt/hctz 37.5-25. After many years I have finally got it under control. The combination the doctor has me on is 100mg of atenolol (50 mg 2X a day), amlodipine 10mg once a day and hydralazine 25 mg 2x a day. I was on lininopril 40 mg and it made me sick and did nothing for my blood pressure. I only take the trimt/hctz on as needed basis if I retain water. My blood pressure today was 108/70. I take my blood pressure twice a day but if you have not been resting for at least 5-10 minutes it will read higher. Any diruretic is very hard on your kidneys so be careful. I didn't realize it until my doctor checked and I was in renal insufficiency. Just an FYI my blood pressure runs high at night but everything I have read says it can run at least 30 points higher at any given time. Hope this helps.

Answer/Reply:

As a Paramedic I will start with saying you should talk to your doctor about those symptoms, but if you were my patient I would also say that your blood pressure will flucuate a great deal throughout the day, depending on your activity or stress level at the time.
What would concern me is your pulse rate. We begin getting concerned when we see pulse rates below 60 beats per minute, (unless your a seasoned marathon runner), you may have a cardic electical issue begining or if your on Beta-blocker it may be normal.
The question you need to ask yourself is; if your doing mild physical activity does your pulse rate increase? If not, you need to see your doctor, if it does then it most like a mild side effect of the medications. For all situtation you will need to be carefull when you stand or sit up fast or or using the toilet as you may become very dizzy or even passout and fall causing serious injury.
Always remember; if your doctor does not take the time to completely explain the medications prescribed or possible side effects, or answer your questions, you have options; you can and should get a second opinion, or even a third if needed. You can and should speak with your pharmisist about drug reactions and interations as they are the one who really do know this info,, most doctors would have a clue about interactions of meds.
Good Luck, and I hope this helps and that you feel better.

Question/Comment:

I had a terrible reaction to Atenolol. I have been taking Toprol XL for 13 years, I have done very well on it. My hair started falling out so my Cardiac doctor put me on Atenolol. I took it for 5 days. I had bad side effects. My glucose leave shot up to 200, I am not diabetic. My blood pressure shot up. I had flashing behind my eyes and a headache, I never have headaches. I just felt all around sick. Now he wants to put me on Coreg. I am not sure I want to try it. I am back on Toprol and feel fine, except the hair loss.

73 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

You all may want to try lower dose of atenolol, but I'd suggest you try to google Dr. West and see if his website comes up as he sells Standard Process supplements that have no side effects and he has formulas for everything including high blood pressure, palpitations, bad leg circulation, etc. The company has been in business for over 75 years. Worth a try as drugs just cover up, but don't get to the problem to actually get rid of it. You can take the supplement along with the meds if that makes you feel more secure, but the time will come when you probably won't need the meds. Of course consult your health provider before going off meds but with blood tests, blood pressure readings, etc. you should be able to tell if safe to go off. I indend to try the formula for edema first and see if that will, in turn, help my blood pressure. You can also write to him in Monteray, CA for advice, at least after you sign up for his monthly newsletter that also teaches good nutrition and things you don't hear the govt. telling you.

gets frustrating. I carry masking tape on me to collect the stray hairs, it really does help with the shedding.

Taken for years now to address high blood pressure and irregular heart beat. It works ok for that but is a factor in my sexual dysfunction. I tried other BP meds but... Could not find one that had side effects that I could stand.

51 year old Male

Question/Comment:

I've been taking Atenolol (Tenormin) for almost 20 years. It was initially prescribed in combination with digoxin for treatment of high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation. My system responded quite well to that combo, with the atrial fib disappearing in less than a year.

My blood pressure has been very well maintained by the atenolol. I take 100 mg every morning, and have had BP readings consistently in the 110-120 / 65-75 range. There have been no noticeable side effects. I wish all the meds I take worked this well.

63 year old Male

Question/Comment:

Has anyone tried taking a smaller dose? I take half of a 25 mg tablet each day for PVC's and elevated BP. It works for both and I don't suffer any of the symptoms that I have just read about in these Q's and A's.

66 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I also have been taking only half of the 25mg tablet for PVCs. The irregular heartbeat seems to have settled down and I have not had any of the side effects listed. I also have asthma, so have been hyper-sensitive to any breathing-related side effects. So far, after about four weeks, I'm happy with the results.

Answer/Reply:

I also take 1/2 of a 25 mg. tablet of atenolol, but not regularly - more as needed but what I notice is that 1/2 is not always enough to really get the bp down and yet it may not decrease the upper reading but it tends to make me feel tired as it decreases the lower no. and also decreases the pulse. If I take 25 mg it really makes me feel washed out as my pulse can be down around 58-62 and my lower reading can be down to 72. I also have diazide and of course the Dr. never told me that the combo could lead to blood-sugar problems. I don't take the diazide all the time but more as needed so don't know if that might keep me from having those problems or not but good to know I need to be careful. Also, I wonder if those problems are experienced more by people taking higher doses of the atenolol with the diazide??

I take occasionally Atenolol for rapid heart rate that generic Paxil doesn't help, many tests show NOTHING wrong with heart. However my right foot gets cold now, but not the left. My dr told me to not worry about it. Is everyone else have both feet get cold? My knees are a big problem now too, I have been on Atenolol for 2.5 years.

55 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I have taken tenormin for about 3 years and am just now starting to have some problems that I think are related. If I don't take the medication within a half hour of the same time daily , I get headaches, lightheadedness, dizziness and general ill feeling. Ater the pill is taken these symptoms subside, and nearly always go away within an hour, so it must be from the pill.

Question/Comment:

I have been on Atenolol for 16 years and have suffered from cold, numb feet and ankles for years. My doctor (who prescribed Atenolol) does not seem concerned. It has become a severe problem for me and affects my ability to walk comfortably.

62 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I'm not a Dr., but I have been using Atenolol for 15 years. Maybe your problem isn't because of the Atenolol but because you are inactive. Do you walk or exercise regularly? I had a problem like yours and it got better when I started doing excercises, stretching, etc. at a physioterapy clinic. I am almost back to normal. Female-63 yrs.

Answer/Reply:

Seems many doctors do not seem concerned with our discomforts these days. How long has he/she been your doctor? Either way, since this was the prescribing doctor (they never think they are wrong), you really should get a second opinion. Since you are having discomfort walking and this doctor is not concerned, see someone specifically for your foot discomfort, taking a list of your medications with you. Please look out for yourself and do not place your trust in anyone who is unconcerned. Good luck in finding good help.

48 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Can you tell me more about your foot symptoms please. I think I read somewhere that one of my medications could be causing foot problems but I can't find it again and my doctor disagrees. I have been on Atenolol for 3 years, but I was also diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and take Metformin. Since starting medication, my feet have been extremely sensitive and cold, and the skin on the ends of my toes gets very dry.

Thanks to the person who mention having cold feet while on Atenolol.I also suffer with extremely cold feet and hands. My hands are so cold that I can hardly type this note .I have Raynaud"s Syndrome which causes it to be double trouble for me. I never knew that the Atenolol I take could cause the same symtoms.

I am not sure, but I know that i have also had memory lasp since on Atenolol (2 yr now)

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I have been on it for 5 yrs. now. I have never been losing my memory at all!

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I was put on Atenolol about 6 years after having some a-fib and palpitations incidents. I also felt like my memory was shot too. After I went on it all of that seemed to improve. But today, my memory is starting to go again and I just went through another period of having a lot of palpitations.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

i have been taking atenolol for 5 years. i have frequent arm pain and body aches and forgetfulness. i am now stopping my medication. i will let you know if that was the side effects..

Answer/Reply:

I also Have been taking Atenolol for 2 1/2 years. I found that I had to also take Potassium. Atenolol did make me tired because eventually I was drained of Potassium (from taking a drug that depleted my potassium.). For anxiety I went on generic Paxil which helped alot. Ask your Doctor if it will help you too. I am 59 and feel great now!

Answer/Reply:

How did you know atentolol depleted your postassium. I just recently got out of the hospital for loss of potassium and i take atenenlol. I wish I could contact you directly through email

I have been taking atenolol for about 2 months and for about a month now I have been so irritable I can barely stand it. I am a very calm and slow to anger person but since taking atenolol I have not been. It may not be the cause of it but it has only started since I have been on atenolol.

I ceased taking it after the 4th tablet.

I just quit taking it as it was killing my stomach. Pain and Neausea. I took it so long anyhow and dealt with it now that I quit it is taking time for the pain of the cramps to quit. I can't only eat certain foods now.

I think this stuff is poison and I intend to improve my life so I will never take their evil drug potions again from Pharma.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Atenolol for a good 10 years and for the past three years or so, my hair has been thinning out so badly it sickens me and I have gained weight so easily. I blame Atenolol for these problems and especially the hair loss. I am thinking of asking for another drug to replace it. I have peripheral vascular disease w/mild internal carotid artery stenosis as well as a systolic murmur due to aortic valve sclerosis per cardiology tests, so I am aware I need meds. I just quit taking Altace after trying for two years to stay awake. I was so extremely tired I need to drink coffee all the time. I switched to Cozaar and all these problems have disappeared after getting through the dizzy stage of the drug. I cannot believe the difference.
Of course I have dyslipidemia with low HDL on Zetia therapy and Lescol XL. Being 61, I started taking Premarin every 4 days or so and my good cholesterol really improved. I also, due to the expense of the two cholesterol drugs mentioned, switched to Simvastatin (generic Zocor) and will test in three months to be sure it is effective. I check regularly to see if any of these drugs inter-react with each other as I think everyone should do.
I also am a Celiac so I am always cautious as to what coating is on my drugs
I will be interested to see if anyone else is on my regimen of drugs and what troubles they may have with them. I would go off a few, but the doctor has me convinced I may have a stroke if I don't take something. I believe him since my mom died of complications such as these
Any ideas as to what would be the best drugs instead of these. I have developed such bad leg pain and no one listens to me about it at all...

my father was recently changed from toprol xl to atenolol. The generic to toprol was recalled and insurance didnt want to pay for toprol. I have a customer that continued to lose her hair and was recently told that the toprol would do it. She was switched to toprol xl. I do not know what difference it will make but if toprol is supposed to be the same as this med, it is very possible that it is your problem(hair loss).

Answer/Reply:

Try asking your doctor for Potassium because the medication does deplete the Potassium in your body. I am a 59 year old female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

You could also try eating more bananas for the loss of potassium if you would rather not take another pill.

Answer/Reply:

I am a 81 year old female who has been taking Atenolol for 2 &1/2 years. My very thick hair has been getting very thin. I am concerned.

83 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

NONgeneric. You said you took it for 10 years, but the problems started 3 years ago. You could ask your Dr. to insist on brand name, even if he has to write to your insurance company to let them know the generics aren't working for you. If your doc doesn't listen, replace him.

We ALL need to do this more, as I am reading much into these new dud generics we are getting pushed at us, we are gaining side affects. If they were the same, they would act the same. I think they are killing many people in the long run, including unlisted allergic ingredients.

Good luck. I hope this helps, although not pretty. It seems to be a common problem with many meds these days.

56 year old Male

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I am 63 years old taking 100mg of Atenolol for about 8 years. For the last three years I don't get a full night sleep. This may not be from the drug, and can be also from stress.

Answer/Reply:

I have a cough probably due to the air pollution in nyc; but I would try decaf tea with honey & lemon (the lemon is what really helps). That usually works for me and vicks. I also have bad headaches which I do not think is caused by this med but walking helps or light stretching exercises. Though I would not take the cough drops.

38 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have had a presistant cough for almost 4 months now. I also have trouble sleeping. NOT going to sleep, but staying asleep.

47 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Caution about cough drops, they are just like candy and greatly increase your risk of dental decay. Try sugar free preferably with the sugar substitute Xylenol which will help prevent the risk of cavities.

I do not have a cough but do you take a Stain drug with his medication? I do have vivid dreams from Simvastatin and my husband has leg pain, stomach pain and can't sleep due to Statin drugs which he has since stopped taking with visible improvement. If it it Lipro something drug that is a Statin ask for a non statin drug to replace it.

60 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

yes' i also get hacking coughs , when i lay down at night it gets worst, i have asmtha also, but i feel its coming from the Atenolol,it starts when i take it, when i drink a lot of water, the coughing is not as bad.

Question/Comment:

I'm 72 and have been on Atenolol for a a year. I have never had any trouble with my bladder in my life until I started taking Atenolol. I have no infection according to the test I have had. I thank you for any information. I have burning and pain after I go to bed at least two times a night which wakes me up to go to the bathroom.

73 year old Female

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Atenolol for about 2 years and was prescribed this medication as a migraine preventative. Maxalt MLT 10 mg was also prescribed for me to take at the onset of a headache. I have suffered with severe migraines for more than 25 years and the severity of them have lessened since I have been on Atenolol. I do have a tendency to bruise easily since starting it and have also gained about 25 lbs. My eating habits are good and I exercise 3 to 4 times a week. I've always been slim until now but do battle w/keeping weight off. My cholestrol has gotten a little high also. My life has been much brighter with this drug and so far is worth any side effects I have encountered. I have tried some natural products and believe those avenues should be traveled before taking prescribed drugs. It's great to read everyone's comments about why they use this drug and their reactions.

56 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I am so glad that I found your post! I have been telling others that my weight gain is do to the meds and it has gone largely ignored. I am in the same position as you except that I take Relpax for an as needed migraine med. I was on Maxalt several years ago. I forget the reason for change. At this point I am at a loss. I can't come off the meds until I loose weight, but I can't loose weight while I'm on the meds.

Question/Comment:

I am a 49 year old female with mitral valve problems which leads to irregular hearbeats (arrythmea). I also suffer from regular migraine attacks. I cannot really complain about serious side effects of Atenolol other than bruising. I tend to feel drowsy but feel that it has more to do with my over weight- problem.

50 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I am 60 and female. I have been on atenolol for a long time. I have never noticed bruising but I do get tired. My hands and feet are always cold and I believe that this is a side affect. Also, atenolol is supposed to reduce the chances of having a migraine and headache and this has certainly been the case with myself. I have never been overweight, always underweight, so I do not think atenolol puts on weight. I think atenolol is a great medication. Good luck.

i am a 57 yr. old black male. i take amlodipipne, linsinopril, atenolol for hig b/p. i get headaches and experience dizziness daily. my doctor says i have to get use to the medicines. i have been on these medications for 6 months now, is that normal?

59 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I started taking atenolol several years ago. Over that period, I have gained about 25 pounds. However, at 60, male and 205 lbs, I have active life, and I still working. I play competitive tennis two and three times a week. I have never had bruising or get tire when playing tennis. However, sleepness is one thing that I blame to Atenolol. Generally, it takes me up to an hour to fall sleep. Rarely, I have headqches, but whe I have one they are similar in intensitive as my wife migraine.

Question/Comment:

My Mom (just died at age 98) and my 2 daughters (ages 56 and 51) and I (76) all suffer from panic attack. We also have heart murmers! And we were all precribed with anenolol. In other words,we have a mitrol valve problem. Panic attack is a symtom of mitrol valve. The atenolol is a marvelous drug that keeps us from having any panic symtoms. I was told about an article in the Readers Digest about 15 or more years ago named "Your Aren't Crazy, you Are Sick!" and it saved our lives and our sanity. My youngest daughter who is now 51, was having all kinds of treatments in Baltimore for hormone problems. Nothing helped, but after I read that article and she was on Atenolol she never had another panic attack. (It was caused by a difficult birth delivery that was stressful on her heart).
