Global Patient Feedback for Atenolol ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
I've been taking Atenelol 25mg nightly for ~10 years. I'm asounded to read the side effects others have detailed because I've developed all except headache, low blood pressure and heart rate. IThe worst is frequent urination, insomnia dryness and diarrhea. I've felt "fluish" most of the time for years such that I've forgotten what it feels like to feel good. Was recently diagnosed with arthritis and my doc suspects fibromyalgia on top of it. I'm 52 and feel 30 years older than that, especially when I'm taking a pile of pills every day. iGuard is VERY helpful to me. Thanks.

I am there. You sound like me. I have been on this for years. My dose was recently raised to 50mg. There are very few of the side effects listed that I don't have. I wonder if these side-effects subside if a person stops taking this drug?

I had been on Atenolol for a few months and also experienced light dizziness. After talking to my doctor about it, he now has me taking 1/2 a tablet and although I still get dizzy, it's not as bad as before. I also take 1/2 a tablet of Avapro, also for high BP. My blood pressure never was extremely high, but it is now perfect - an average of 112/72. I attribute a good diet and exercise to this accomlishment as well!

I have been taking Atenolol for about 10 years now for a cardiac arrhythmia and at one point about 6 years ago, I asked my Dr. if I could stop taking them. He told me then that I would have to be gently weaned off the drug. He told me to start taking it every other day for two weeks instead of every day. Then after two weeks, start taking it every third day for two weeks, then every 4th day for two weeks, and every 5th day for two weeks, etc. until I get down to only 1 every two weeks. Then I could stop taking it. He said to never just stop taking it all of a sudden. I take mine at night before I go to bed. I have never felt dizzy or anxious while on this drug and I am still taking it.

I take both Cozaar and atenolol for blood pressure. I was concerned about the warnings on the bottles about dizziness, etc. so I started taking the medicines at night. I asked my doctor about it and he said it didn't matter what time I took them as long as I took them every day. I feel fine during the day with no side affects.

Answer/Reply:
I take the same medications (Cozaar and atenolol). Cardiac arrhythmias became a problem for me when I increased activity. The original recommendation was at bedtime. I found my pulse rate went up and I had difficulties falling to sleep. I also had very significant leg cramps in the morning. I starting taking atenolol at suppertime. Sleep went back to normal but morning leg cramps continued. Both doctors happened to be on holiday, so I cut the atenolol in half (now 12.5mg) and found a significant reduction in leg cramps. I was then put on quinine which has nearly eliminated leg cramps. Though this is not a recommended use for quinine, it does work well though blood test for kidney and liver function should be done regularly. I have also found the numbness in my feet (diabetes) has remarkably improved with the use of quinine.
I believe no medication should be considered "forever". The body changes with time and good diet. Always review medications with your doctor and ask questions every 6-12 months. Reducing the quantity of medications will indicate if the medication has acturally had a healing effect for your condition. I minimize drug us as much as possible. I hope atenlol will no longer be required in a year or two. It works for me! Good Luck. P.S. Drugs do not disolve in the stomach at night. Ask your pharmacist. They are very knowledgable!

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Taking the medication in the evening may decrease the dizziness you feel. The majority of the side effects may decrease as you sleep. Try taking the atenolol in the evening to see if it helps. Start on an evening when you can stay home the next day if the dizziness is still there in the morning. If your symptoms continue, discuss them with your doctor because there are other types of medications to treat high blood pressure that may not affect you in the same way.

I was on atenolol for about 10 yrs. the dose was doubled after 5 yrs. I went off of it several months ago. I feel like a new person, lots more energy. Before that i went off of Lipitor after being on it for 12 yrs.
I have told my heart dr. that i will not go back on a statin nor beta blocker. The reason is that for those years I was on those pills, I could not walk for more than 1/8 a mile with out terrible pain in my legs, i walked like an old woman, I am now 61. When i went off of the beta blocker, my life really took off. I not longer feel like an old woman and can easily walk a mile or more without any pain. they told me for years to exercise and loose weight . But i just didn't have the energy and it was painful.
When I see an elderly person having problems walking, I wonder to myself what statin they are on! being on those pills made everything I did such an effort and i was always worried that if I avoided going anywhere where i would have to walk ... Quality of life was terrible for all of those years and not one dr. suggested I try going off of these pills. Many dr;s only focus on getting the blood pressure down.. they certainly don't warn any of us about the side effects.
There are millions of drugs out there and I will never take a drug again that causes so many problems. Your dr. should be more than happy to try many different drugs to find one that doesn't have bad side effects. My dr. is working with me and it has been difficult. but it was all interrupted when I found out that my hyperparathyroid condition could also be making my BP high.. my calcium levels have been elevated for years .I am having the adenoma taken out soon and will see if that was effecting my BP. I, too was diagnosed with hypertension in my late 40's, and I wonder if it was my hyperparathyroid causing it --- if your calcium levels are high, you may have this condition. (google: hyperparathyroidism ). If you don't advocate for yourself. no one else will, certainly not your dr. So, speak up and tell your dr. he must find you a medication that does not affect your Quality of Life.

Answer/Reply:
Not good to stop a beta blocker abruptly.
Yes, it can make asthma worse but you would want to taper off of it according to your doctor's directions.
Stopping too fast can lead to an ischemic reaction where less blood gets to the heart. If you have angina this is not good.

why should you not take atenolol if you have asthma??
51 year old Female
Posted: 2009-10-23 04:00:50
iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Atenolol is in the beta blocker drug class. Typically atenolol only exerts its effect on the "beta 1 receptors" which are primarily heart specific. However there is a risk that it may impact "beta 2 receptors" which control bronchial/lung function. Taking atenolol may pose a risk of affecting lung/bronchial function in an adverse way by causing your airways to constrict. In general, atenolol should not be used in patients who have any history of bronchospastic disease, like asthma. If you are taking atenolol and have asthma, you may want to discuss this concern with your doctor. Sometimes doctors feel the benefits of atenolol at a low dose will outweigh the risk of causing airway constriction. You can also continue to monitor your breathing and asthma symptoms and report any worsening to your doctor who may wish to make adjustments to the atenolol at that point.
Posted: 2009-10-29 21:34:16
Answer/Reply:
I have read that you are not supposed to stop taking a beta blocker cold turkey, that you have to wean off of it or add in another one to take its place. If you want to stop taking it, you should only do so under your doctors supervision. If you've been taking it awhile and suddenly stop it, it can possibly cause you to have a heart attack. Take care and good luck.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
There is a potential drug interaction between atenolol and Paxil. Using these two drugs together may have additive effects on blood pressure and sedation. However, many people take both of these drugs and do not experience any side effects or problems. About 3% of iGuard members who are taking Paxil are also taking atenolol.
If you are taking both of these medications, watch for excessive sleepiness or signs of low blood pressure, such as dizziness, light-headedness, or fainting. If you experience any of these side effects, please follow up with your doctor as soon as possible.

It is difficult to know if your medications are causing you to feel sick without knowing what symptoms you are experiencing. Both atenolol and Zoloft can cause nausea, vomiting, and headache, just to name a few side effects. Many patients report drowsiness or dizziness as well. Please speak with your doctor about your symptoms, perhaps a dose change would make a difference.

I'm know these are all possible side effects, but I was wondering if these symptoms ever fade as she adjust to the drug or if I should go ahead and request a drug change.

Answer/Reply:
I have been taking Atenolol 50 mg since 1981 to control tachycardia and migraines. I too have experienced the same problem in my hands & feet. My doctor told me that I had Raynaud's syndrome which was aggrivated by taking the drug, not the cause. Since it is the only medication that really helps to control my problems, I just make certain I wear gloves and warm socks when it gets cold. I also found that exercise helps reduce the symptoms (tai chi & yoga)

I am 61 and have taken atenolol 25 mg for over 20 years. I believe one of the side effects are cold extremities, which I have. Atenolol does make me feel tired too. Atenolol also reduces headaches. I have had no other side effects and it is a much used medication in the hospital where I work. I have been very happy with atenolol.

62 year old male had 2 strokes March was a year ago. Am taking atenolol and lisinopril for hypertension. Was keeping BP pretty regulated until recently. It was reading 118/78. Now for the past few days it is reading 172/76 and then sometimes its 159/78. What could be making this big difference?

I am 54 and just started on Atenolol and have experienced vertigo-like dizziness. It's one of the side effects, but I don't know if I can tolerate it much longer. I was on Bystolic and it did the same thing, only it also gave me joint pain. I also take Avapro (in the morning, Atenolol in the evening) for high BP with no side effects. Does anyone else have dizziness with this drug and does it ever go away?

Answer/Reply:
I have been on Atenolol for almost five years, yes i did get dizzy and light headed. Most of my heart medicines have this side effect. I has got better over the years however, when i stand quickly or bend over and stand up quickly I still get light headed. Have you checked to make sure that your BP is not to low. Make sure with your doctor. But the medicine side effects do go away over a period of time.

I was perscribed 50mgs of atenolol and my BP dropped as low as 112/54 . After a week it went back up to 160/100. I told my doctor and he told me to up the dose to 100mg . My BP has now been at a healthy steady number going on a month. I think your body adjusts to the first dose after a week or so and then you have to up it and then its fine.

Answer/Reply:
Atenolol is a beta blocker to keep your bloodpressure on a even line I take other medicine for headaches and migraines. My migraines do not cause me pain like they did when I was a teenager. The medicine that I take is Midrin and it releases the muscles around the blood vessels in the back of the neck to let the blood flow better. You need to check with your doctor about the medicine

Answer/Reply:
Yes, I do. I am female and 40. Diagnosed with a dysrythmia at 30 and placed on this medication. I had been seen in the ER prior to this event many, many times with uncontrolled pain of migraine. So bad, I thought my brain had a bleed at times.....Since the time I was placed on Atenolol for my heart, I can count on one hand the amount of migraines I've had over the past 10 years.
This medication is a preventative maintenance drug for lifelong control over migraines. I take the medication to control my dysrythmia and angia associated with it. Works very well for both conditions. I no longer need RX medications for my migraines. At the first sign of an oncoming attack (I experience an Aura prior to the onset) I take 2 Tylenol Extra Strength and one hour later take 2 Alieve and by..by..headache. No sedation, no nausea, no need for injections, visits to the ER. I feel as if I now have control over the situation.
After 10 years, I've not had any negative experience...ever...from taking Atenolol. I was even directed by my OB/GYN to take this medication throughout my pregnancy at 36. I now have a beautiful, healthy and happy 4 yr old. I trust this medication, I believe that you can as well... remember if you take it and suspect that something is wrong, notify your physician and you can be switched to other types of Beta's for improved tolerance. Helpful med with little to no side effects...Good luck.

I am so glad that I checked out this website - I have been on atenolol for quite some time and also on Calcium since I have the very beginnings of osteo. Now I find out that the b.p. pill should be taken many hours apart from the calcium because atenolol decreases the effectiveness of calcium in the body.
Why didn't the pharmacist or doctor tell me about this????

Answer/Reply:
I am a 74 year old active woman and have been on 50 mgs of atenolol for 11 years and the only side affect I noticed was that my weight increased about 5 lbs. It is probably the one drug for high blood pressure that has the least side affects for people with sensitive digestive systems.
Before you start taking any drug however, you should ask your doctor questions, don't assume that he is going to do the telling. In today's world, we need to be in control of our health, keep a record of the drugs you are taking and jot them down on a slip of paper that you can carry with you at all times. Ask your pharmacist, and your doctor and read what it says about the drug you are taking so you will not be taking calcium supplements at the same time you take atenolol.

Hello, I am also taking Calcium and Tenormin both for a long time. I had no idea, or was ever told not to take these two medications at the same time. Thank you so much for the info. My osteo is not at the beginning stage. I was given a different type of medicine for osteo a few years ago, not an over the counter medicine. I still need something stronger but I had a bad reaction from the medicine and was told never to take prescription medicine for osteo again. I am very upset that I was never told not to take Calcium at the same time I take Tenormin. Now I feel like the Calcium all this time has not helped me at all. I always thought the doctors were supposed to educate patients about there meds. 59 year old female.

i was told long ago that when a person gets old, or older, body parts start to wear out, stamina wears out, strength wears out....in most cases one becomes less active and a myriad of things happen during this process...for me, i take getting older with a grain of salt....i expect these things to happen....and they do....like all kids in school, i've been there and my accomplishments, in most cases, were better....

Muscle cramps and leg pain has been reported with atenolol use. However, it is not a common side effect - less than 1% of iGuard members have reported muscle pain and stiffness. It is a good idea to discuss this symptom with your doctor to make sure something more serious is not going on.
