Question/Comment:
I am concerned regarding people speaking of weight gain when taking metoprolol. I was prescribed 200mg tablets to be taken at bedtime by my cardiologist who also suggested that I try to lose five pounds. So does it differ from person to person or is this one of the side effects? Thanks.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Side effects can be variable amongst patients with weight gain being no different... many patients take metoprolol without experiencing any weight problems whatsoever. That said, weight gain is quite commonly reported.

Question/Comment:
I took Toprol for approximately 10 years with no known side effects and switched to Metoprolol in October, 2007. I have now a rapid weight gain since November. Could this be due to the Metoprolol?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Weight gain is a common side effect of some beta blockers, and can appear even if doses are increased. If you've noticed rapid weight gain, it would be worth discussing this with your doctor.

Question/Comment:
I took Toprol for over a year after cardioversion and never had any breakthrough AFib problems. Because the drug was not on my insurer's Formulary I requested Metoprolol. I've been on it for three months and have had several incidents of AFib. When reported at a recent visit to the cardiologist he seemed not to concerned. Should he have been?

Does anybody take any of the following supplements along with their Heart Meds? Lecithin, Red Yeast Rice, Hawthorne Berry?

Answer/Reply:
I used to take Lecithin before I found out i had to take my heart med, but i haven't taken any in the last 5 yrs, but I would suggest that you talk o your Dr. first before you take Red Yeast Rice and Hawthorne Berry as it may not be right for you. I read on the bottle of Red Yeast Rice that people with high blood pressure and heart problems should not take it without Dr.'s okay.

Answer/Reply:
i take hawthorne berry tea, i started to take it last april due to irregular heartbeat, it has helped alot, but just recently i was not sure if it is slowing my heart down too much 45 beats. so i take it less frequently. i do not take red yeast rice or Lecithin. i tried Lecithin for lowering my cholestrol and it did not work so stopped.
Deos anyone suffered from irregular heartbeats (PVC's) and if so what do you do or take to help stop them. THey drive me crazy.

Question/Comment:
I am taking metoprolol to control high blood pressure, irregular heart beat and was to be used as a migraine preventative-which is a beta blocker (it WAS working in that area, but migraines are back worse than ever!) I was having trouble with edema in my legs and feet, but Dr. lowered my dosage of metoprolol, increased my hydrochlorothiazide and put me on potassium CL. I have put on weight, which I find very hard to drop (15 #gain) and other than that, I have had no other side effects.

Answer/Reply:
My cardiologist has me on Metoprolol, Plavix with an aspirin a day and my PCP has me taking a 500 mg of Potassium and 2 Lasix tablets a day, but I haven't had a migraine headache in almost 10 yrs as I've reduced my stress level and I have been out on permanent Disability through Social Security.

Question/Comment:
I was told that generic drugs are made by different manufacturers and sometimes the strength of that medication could vary. This was my concern as I am taking this medication for irregular heartbeats, rapid heartbeats and I have found that I have been experiencing the irregular heartbeats more now than I did when I was taking Toprol (the non generic drug). I am interested if anyone is experiencing this problem with Metoprolol. My perscription is 25 MG.

Answer/Reply:
You might talk to your Dr. as mine has me taking a half of a 50mg tabet in the morning and half in the evening and it has helped me with my heart beat doing it this way as it was explained to me that at that small of dosage it only lasts for 12 hours. It was explained to me that way by my cardiologist.
