Question/Comment:

I am a 76 year old female who takes 50mg metoprolol tab sandoz daily. In the last 18 months I have gained quite a bit of weight although my eating habits have not changed, nor my life style. I also itch in my scalp and other parts of my body although there is no rash. Can my medication be the cause of these problems?

Answer/Reply:

My 55 yrs. old husband is taking this medicine for what I have no clue. It was a discharge med. from the hospital & we're meeting with the Cardiologist to take him off as they took him off all of his heart/high BP meds. due to finding his BP was never a problem and didn't cause his stroke. He was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus which affects his clotting capabilities.

In any event, he has gotten severe weight gain which I believe is from this med., and tons of bloating and abdominal discomfort. He is only on 1/2 of a 25 mg. tablet 2 times a day. But after researching his meds. which includes Coumadin and Keppra, it appears that the Metoprolol is the most probable cause of the weight gain. He also itches a lot when getting over-heated.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

The side effect of weight gain was reported by 10% of iGuard members taking metoprolol. The product information for Lopressor, the brand name for metoprolol, states that a small number of patients reported rash or itching while taking metoprolol.

I started taking Toprol XL in 2006--the year I was finally tenatively diagnosed with CHF--Congestive Heart Failure. I was only 39 when I started. At first it DID lower my blood pressure too low. Doctors thought it was the Toprol XL. I kept gaining weight. I KNEW it was my thyroid--but nobody would listen to me until I DEMANDED A THYROID TEST. Finally, boom--we fouind the problem. I encourage all of you who have had papilations or irregular heartbeat and LOW blood pressure with weight gain to PLLEEAASSSEEEE get your thyroid tested. Also--make sure your doctor tests TSH, T3 AND T4. Something my doctors did NOT do that I now wonder if they should have---and I think you guys should too--also get your adrenal glands, AND your pituitary gland checked. Ditto to your LIVER. Because weight gain is another sign of slightly sluggish liver as well. I fou nd all this info out by reading stuff from naturopathic doctors who use a combination of convential medicine with natural medicine. I am in the process of trying to find one of these doctors that actually takes Medicare in the Houston/Harris County area now. If your doctor wants you to start taking a beta blocker--please, PLEASE have bloodwork done before you even start taking it or get the script filled. Here is my theory: I suspect that those of us t hat gain and end up with low blood pressure----actually have HYPOTHYROIDISM causing the irregular heartbeats.

Question/Comment:

I switched Toprol XL to Metoprolol Succ ER around 3 months ago. I have a raised, itchy rash on my face which my doctor thinks is drug induced Lupus from the Metoprolol. I am stopping the Metoprolol for 2 weeks to see if the rash goes away.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I have an itchy rash on my face too. Has the rash on your face gone away after you stopped taking the meds?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Did your rash go away? My dad is having lupus-like symptoms (no rash) and they can't find out what is wrong with him. I suspect his medication, but since it is not listed as a med that normally causes drug-induced lupus, not one believes me.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Metoprolol 25 mg. in the morning and 25 mg. in the evening. I find that taking smaller dosages twice a day helps with side affects. I also take a low dose of Triamterene for fluid retention. This regimen seems to work good and I have had no symptoms of irregular heart beats or rapid heart beats since being on it. I would advise though to stay away from salt as much as possible which causes fluid retention and elevated blood pressure.

Question/Comment:

I have been on this drug for high blood pressure for about 3 mons. I noticed a DRASTIC hair loss and reviewed sided effects on the net. One of the greatest side effects is hair loss. I removed myself from it with great objection from my doctor. He changed my meds, now I just have to wait and see if my hair comes back in.

67 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I was wondering why my hair was niot growing and seemed to be falling out. Now I know why my hair is so thin. Thanks so much for letting me know even though it keeps my blood pressure is doing good on this stuff I don't want to be with no hair. What can I do to stop this hair loss? I am 58 years old and have never had problems with my being so short.

Answer/Reply:

I just wrote in to say the same thing with the hair loss. My cardiologist actually said he never herd of this. I consulted another doctor and the pharmcy and they both said it is a side effect. I am currently weaning myself and also hope that it comes back. It is very drastic and I cant belive it could happen so fast.
