Question/Comment:

I have been taking metoprolol for about a year and my palpitations are getting worse and my breathing problems have worsened. I take about 50 mg a day. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Question/Comment:

I started taking metoprolol (200mgs) per day about seven years ago.

I built up a toxcicity level that affected my breathing- the doctor said was having severe bronchial spasms. I now take only 50 mgs in the morning- I
am now feeling better.

I also gained a lot of weight on this medication.

what happens if i stop taking the medicine

Answer/Reply:

I am not a doctor, but I have been on metaprolol for several after having a heart attack. It was prescribed for me because of mild hypertension and a slightly elevated heart rate associated with stress from being a firefighter/paramedic for 25 years.

Although the drug worked well for me insofar as keeping my blood pressure within normal limits and getting my heart rate down, I was troubled with postural hypotension (get lightheaded when I stand from a sitting or lying position to quickly), constant tiredness, and frequent nightmares. Whenever I would try to do some sort of semi-strenuous work, I would get lightheaded and nearly pass out, and would have to quickly lie down with my feet elevated until the lightheadedness would pass. Apparently this is due to the action of the drug which keeps your blood pressure and pulse rate from rising naturally in response to the increased exertion.

Whenever my cardiologist would schedule me for a treadmill stress test, several days before the stress test he would begin weaning me off the metaprolol. He stressed that metaprolol was not something you could quit "cold turkey." When he would wean me off the metaprolol, he would cut my dose in 1/2 on consecutive days until I was off the medication for a few days prior to the stress test. Since I was taking one pill in the morning and one at night (2 pills per day), he would first cut out the morning or evening pill (my choice to decide), then after one day of taking only the one pill, he would cut my dose to 1/2 a pill per day for one day. Then he would have me cut my dose down to 1/4 pill for one day, and then discontinue the medication for two days prior to the stress test.

When I was weaned off the drug, I felt absolutely wonderful! I had plenty of energy and felt like I did before my heart attack. The only problem was, my high blood pressure and high pulse rate would return like it was before my heart attack, but I did feel normal again until I started back on the drug.

I am a 61 year old female, I was taking the drug for six weeks and I stopped taking it. I was taking it for heart palpatations. I feel fine now. Is there danger now of me suddenly stop taking it. I had been off it for about three weeks. I have Hep-c virur, which I contracted from a blood transfusion in 1986. My enzymes stayed low for the past year with no treaments, just health food and herbal medicines. I took that metoprolol and I had a blood test which I get every four months since 1992 two weeks ago and my enzymes is sky high.I am wondering if the Metoprol could have had any thing to do with that.

Question/Comment:

i've been taking toprol xl for years they changed me on the generic Metoprolol before then my pressures was good sometimes way low enough were i did'nt have to take the meds that day cause if i took they would drop to low. then they changed me to the generic Metoprolol then my top number was regular then the bottem was way high it did it before when they changed it that way i called the doc to change back but the phamist says theres no diffrence in the pill. i no its not in my head cause i like the generic price compared to the name brand i'm thinking my insurance don't want to pay for the name brand trying to go to the cheaper brand ? have anyone else have this happen to them?

42 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

yes I was having the exact same thing happen to me, I was doing fine with my blood pressure level as far as normal is concern 120/80 while I was taking the brand name toprol xl but one day the pharmacist gave me generic and I did not know it until I became very weak and dizzy the next day, so I had my pressure checked and it was 130/95, my doctor and I came to the conclusion I cannot take generic brand, because my pressure was back to normal when I return to brand tropol xl

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I have been taking toprol for 10 years, and now due to the high cost
I too am forced to buy the generic brand. Yes it is definitly different.
My doctor also say there the same, and then increase the dose
Because my Blood pressure is too high. I have taken up to 200mg
But reduced it to 50 mg, the doctors complain, but I continue to
Request other methods of controlling my blood pressure. My heart
Doesn't beat out of control with 50mg & I feel normal, not tired or
Light headed. Go with your feelings & don't let the doctors over
Medicate you. There are other medication to take with toprol and
Other methods to lower your blood pressure, such as foods & diets.

Answer/Reply:

I dont believe that all generics are the same as the real meds, I have very bad anxiety and
my primary Dr. put me on 10mg xanax 8 yrs. ago I take !/2 one during day & 1 at night, it
helps me to calm down & sleep. Recently had heart attack & stents put in & the cardiologist put me on 4 different kinds of meds. one being plavix, well that is a costly medicine alone
and no insurance, you shop around for bestprice. So, anyway, I changed pharmacys & when
getting my meds noticed my xanax/aprazalom(generic) was different shape then what I had been used to for 6 yrs. Different pharmacutical but, suposely same thing. NOT, I could take my other one app. 30minutes before bed & it relaxed me, this new one I take 1hr before bed and
doesnt do the same, sometimes I wind up having to take 2 and I dont like that cause it can affect your memory over long period of time! So, I went back to my old pharmacy for that med.

Question/Comment:

I am an insulin dependant diabetic for 43 years now and on an insulin pump for 7 years. Since starting metopropolol 6 months ago I have had increasing low blood sugars in the am (pre dawn) as well as an inability to lose weight even with diet and vigorous excercising 4 x week--about same time as starting med. Even more vivid dreams. I take my meds at night to avoid the fatigue factor but I am wondering if I should take the metopropol in the am or split my 75 mg does to 25 mg TID?

54 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have taken 3 blood pressure medicines for years and they have kept my pressure normal. They are Norvasc, Toprol and Diovan. A couple of weeks ago I ran out of Toprol and it has taken 10 days to get it. During this time I monitored my blood pressure continually. My blood pressure has dropped significantly, my heart rate has gone up to 100 beats per minute, but my sugar level has gone up.

What is the connection between all of this?

Question/Comment:

I am 42 years old. I had a cather ablation approximately 4 years ago for SVT that I was diagnosed with in the 5th grade. I was fine for many years on medication. After I had my son I started having episodes more frequently and they would last sometimes up to 4 hours. After having to have my HR reversed with adenosine at Astroworld I decided to have the ablation. 2 years after the ablation I started waking up at night with severe palpatations. I thought that the ablation had reversed. It hadn't. It's like I am having anxiety attacks in my sleep. Anyway, my cardiologist put me on metotrol 1/2 of a 25 mg. tablet once daily. I have noticed that I am having frequent PVCs. I'm not sure if it is because of the toprol or just anxiety. I have had those in the past it just seems like now they are more frequent. Has anyone else noticed this as a side effect? I exercise and watch what I eat I feel like my heart should not be doing this. Any suggestions?

43 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I am 32 years old and have been taking Toprol since 2001. I was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure after the birth of my second child. I have severe PVC's. I don't know if its from the medicine but it really scares me. Today I made an appt. with the cardiologist for 10/20. I will be anxious to ask him if the medicine is contributing to the PVC's.

I am having the same problem. I take 1/2 of a 25mg of Metoprolol. I also take Enalapril. Since starting the Metoprolol - i continue to have PVC's - skipped heartbeats. It is making my life miserable. It's scary and i do get anxiety but who wouldnt if your heart keeps skipping beats? I'm thinking about switching doctors - i want off of this metoprolol.

Answer/Reply:

What are PVCs? I began taking metoprolol ER 25 mg about a month ago. The heart Dr. said it would help my breathing - I also take furosemide prescribed by the same Heart Dr. I had to get clearance from a heart dr. for surgery back in Feb. I had never been told anything about heart problems before. Now I'm on these 2 meds and I worry. She, the heart dr., doesn't tell me much. Something about a valve???
Any info would be appreciated.

Answer/Reply:

PVC stands for Premature Ventricular Contraction. A normal EKG is referred to as Normal Sinus Rhythm (NSR) because normally the electrical impulse in the heart that initiates the contraction sequence originates in a small area in the upper right chamber of the heart known as the Sino-Atrial (SA) Node. The electrical impulse then spreads through the electrically-sensative cardiac cells like outgoing waves when you throw a stone into a pond.

When the electrical "wave" from the SA node reaches the septum of the heart (the part of the heart that separates the inside of the heart into 4 separate chambers), it is picked up by what is known as the Atrio-Ventricular (AV) node, which then activates the muscular lower chambers of the heart known as the ventricles to beat forcefully.

When the SA node (for whatever reason) fails to initiate the electrical activity, any other cardiac cell in the heart is capable of initiating the activity. Usually another atrial cell will assume that back-up responsibility, but sometimes several atrial cells will decide to try to "be the boss" and will cause a dysrhythmia known as atrial fibrillation (or A-fib) which causes multiple atrial cell charges to go off until one of them is picked up by the A-V node, causing the ventricles to fire.

If none of the atrial cardiac cells assumes the role of initiating the electrical impulse to begin the contraction, the A-V node is capable of taking over as the heart's pacemaker. This is known as a nodal rhythm, and is capable of activating the ventricles to fire in a powerful coordinated fashion, although generally at a slower rate than normal.

If the A-V node fails to fire off, any of the the cardiac cells in the ventricles can assume that role, although not as effectively nor as well-coordinated as if the contraction followed the normal conduction path. On an EKG, this appears as a "wide and bizarre" upward blip on the screen, rather than the normal narrow upward blip.

Sometimes, for various reasons, the cells of the ventricles become irritated and decide to fire off in the absence of, or without any regard for, what other electrical activity may be occurring in the heart. When this occurs, this is known as a premature ventricular contraction, or PVC, because it did not initiate in the cells of the heart above the ventricles.

I'm currently on Metoprolol (50mg 2x daily). I found that If I took my 2nd dose after 5PM, I would run the risk of having rather severe and weird dreams. It also created a lot of anxiety when I'd wake up. My heart would be palpitating big time.

Try taking the drug at least 8-9 hours before you go to sleep. And take it with a little food. Like a cracker or something small.

I now take my doses at 5AM and 3-4PM daily. It helped me considerably.

Answer/Reply:

I had an ablation for wolff parkinson white syndrom in March. I was having palpitations and they finaly found out what was wrong. The ablation was not successful. The day after the ablation I started with skipped beats. I have had them on and off since then. I tried metroprol for 2 months and they did help but I started to loose my hair. I have noticed that I have been having night sweats and the skipped beats are worse around my period. Maybe you are having peri- mentopsal symptoms. I hate the night . I wake up anxious like you and my heart is going wild. It is very scary and the doctors are saying everything is fine. Just annoying. They want me to try the medicine again thinking the hair loss was from my thyroid or the peri stuff. I was also on 1/2 of a 25 pill.

I've been on Toprol Since 1993 and found it was the better of most drugs I've had to take. I have been on the Plavix for a little over a year in 2004-2005 and asked to be put back on it after being off from it for a while. I felt safer on it, I don't know if this was a false sense feeling. However I'm back on it with the Toprol and ASA, . I only notice that I am a little more tired. Never had the dreams people talk about.

I have been using this medicine for about a year and have gained so much weight it's depressing and my ankles have been swollen for some time but it has not helped my blood pressure yet.

I have been taking metoprolol for 24 years. I have never experienced weight gain from taking metoprolol. If you are experiencing edema of your ankles and your blood pressure is elevated you should probably have your kidney function checked.

I CAN'T SLEEP AT NIGHT, I HAVE GAINED ABOUT 50LBS, I HAVE NO ENEGRY, I AM LETHARGIC WHEN I WALK AND THAT IS SINCE I HAVE BEEN TAKING TOPROL I AM 71 YEARS YOUNG AND I HAVE BEEN ON THIS SINCE 2005. THANKS DORIS

73 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Geez, this sounds like me! I can't say how long I've on the medication though. Long enough that I went from 50mg twice a day to 100mg twice a day now. I am tired all the time, have put on a lot of weight (at least 50lbs), lethargic, and although I can sleep, I don't sleep well. I don't have the problems with dreams like others have mentioned. I thought I was going nuts! Doctors tell me that most of my problems are expected as you age, or are diabetic related (I am diabetic), or they have no answer whatsoever. I thought part of the problem was my heart surgery eight years ago and recently thought it was my thyroid. Now, I'm wondering if it's the medication?

47 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I forgot to state my age when I posted. I made the comment about what the doctors tell me about my symptoms being age related. I am 45. I don't think my problems are age related. Oh, and I've been diabetic since I was 4 years old.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I started taking Metoprolol in February of this year. Immediately I noticed a weight gain but was not sure if it was the medication, my thyroid or perimenopause. Then about a month ago I was started back on it again, but on an increased dose and once again, I noticed an increase in my weight immediately...but, once again, I did not know if it was the medication or something else Until tonight that is. I have to wonder, has anyone asked why there are so 'few' people who supposedly have reported problems with the medication. It seems like so many people are having the same side effects...weight gain, lethargy, and a depression like feeling. Yet no doctors are aware of this...WHY!!!??? I want to know when they are going to get on the ball and learn about this medication --- I know there is one or two doctors out thiere that will be learning about it.I can't afford to gain any more weight.

Question/Comment:

Are there any issues in taking Toprol with herbal/nutrient drugs?

49 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

There were no herbal drugs and metoprolol interactions found in the iGuard drug interaction system. However, some vitamins and mineral supplements such as calcium can decrease the absorption of metoprolol when these supplements are taken with metoprolol. It's a good idea to separate taking metoprolol from vitamins and mineral supplements by several hours to minimize this interaction.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking metoprolol for over 2 years. I switched from Toprol XL which I had been taking for over 5 years. I have not experienced any hair loss or weight gain. I am a heart patient and so use other meds as well. I have noticed some memory loss but cannot attribute it to the metoprolol.

Question/Comment:

I was put on Toprol XL to relax my heart muscles, I have Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy. I have been on it since 1996. I was on 100 mg, then in November I became really short of breath. I started feeling like my heart was not getting enough oxygen. My cardiologist reduced my Toprol to 50 mg. I also started losing my hair in November and I am anemic, the doctor says it is not Iron anemia. I also am on oxygen at night. How much of this is due to Toprol. My doctor thinks my anemia is from Arthrotec.

I also lost hair on this medicine. I have discontiued it. One cardiologist said it wasn't from toprel. The pharmists said it could be from it and a second cardiologist said it was also from the toprel. Sorry I can't help with anemia question. I am waiting to see if the hair starts to grow back.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I too experienced severe hair loss from Toprol....handfuls coming out while shampooing. The first time I mentioned it my doctor said, "It's not the Toprol". I went back today and made him look up the side effects. He came back a little later and said, "I had to look for it, but it does mention reversible alopecia (hair loss). We decided to try Cardizem instead, a calcium blocker, not a beta blocker, and hope that the condition will improve and do a better job of getting BP under control. SO....don't let your doctor bully you just because you have one of the rarer side effects. I will report back in a few months as to whether or not my hair is coming back! By the way, my hairdresser started me on a Nioxin regimen.....shampoo, conditioner and scalp spray. It is supposed to help remove medications and is recommended for chemo users as well. I hope this will help too!

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Isolated cases of hair loss have been identified in the product information for this medication and iGuard has received several reports of hair loss posted on this forum. It's hard to say how much of this is due to Toprol-XL - since these cases may have other contributing factors and it's difficult to prove a direct link with a small number of cases.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I, too, have experienced severe hair loss since beginning metoprolol after vascular stent implant. Am also on lisinopril and plavix, plus 81 mg. aspirin and pravachol. Have also experienced extreme weight gain with distended abdomen, this after having been below weight for age and height and ABSOLUTELY NOT increasing food intake. Very discouraging. Want to keep heart healthy, but am sliding into depression over the change in physical appearance.

Question/Comment:

have been on 25mg Toprol XL about 2-3 yrs. In addition to short term memory probs (confirmed by several acquaintances who also take Toprol) I discovered that the drug (my theory) actually caused a dramatic increase in systolic BP for the lst four hours after taking. My dr. seemed reluctant to agree with this. I am taking Toprol for palpitations. Anyway, last two days heartrate has dropped to mid 40s during night. This am I drank two cups of coffee and walked for 20 mins to get the rate up to nearly 60 bpm; this after taking my synthroid 100 mcg. MD placing holter monitor in am and told me to STOP Toprol. Is this safe to stop all at once? Also, could the synthroid (newly increased from 75mcg to 100 mcg be the problem and not the Toprol? I am experiencing some chest "tightness"

I was put on 25 mg.Toprol recently for Atrial Fibrilation. It has caused my heart rate to slow dowm. I divided it into two doses 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the evening. That seems to work.I keep getting episodes of racing heart and end up in the E.R. each time. I had a 14 day monitor on and was told I didn't need the pacemaker. After my last trip to the E/R they now say I need the pacemaker. Go figure. I am thouroughly confused. Incidently I have not seen any signs of hair loss.

A very common reason for hair loss is not enough protein intake. Women should get between 56 and 60 grams a day, I think.
Monitor that for a week and see how your doing in that aspect, perhaps?

Answer/Reply:

If you're taking lisinipril and toprol at the same time, your blood pressure will drop like a rock. I had that experience in the hospital for a couple of days waiting for a catheterization, and went from 124/72 down to 85/58. The nurse got startled and the Dr. ordered an all-night saline drip. By morning, I was up to 110/68.
Either drug is good by itself, NOT TOGETHER.
