Answer/Reply:

I can only comment on the Metroprolol. 25 mg is the lowest does I think they have. You can spilt the pill and have 12.5 in the morning and 12.5 in the evening. That is how my cardiologist told me to take it. It is time released but she feels this works the best. I don't take it for blood pressure problems. I take it for pvs (skipped beats).

Answer/Reply:

Metoprolol succ er 50mg has been voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer www.ethex.com and the FDA. The recall letter by the FDA says that their is possibility that the pills had much more medication in them then stated. I have had severe headaches and stroke like symptoms since December. This medication may or may not have something to do with it. Check with your doctor.
The FDA has the voluntary recall posted on their website. The Toporol version (non generic) was not effected.

I also was on Metropol Succ ER 50 mg. and had a TIA on 1/14/09. My first. A second one a couple hrs. later and another one (very mild for the last one) a week later. None since and I, of course am not on it now. The first TIA lated 40 mins. or more.

Next thing I know, it was being recalled. I have read of others having strokes while on this stuff. so, I would like to hear of others.

THX for the info.

Question/Comment:

Question? Been on 50 mg of metoprolol since 9/08. Occasionally get a sharp pain in my chest when exerting ie. shoveling, playing with the grandkids, bending over and lifting. Never had this before. Got concerned and had a EKG with a stress test. Didn't get the pain but the Doc stopped the test at 145 and informed me that I had a blocked arterie. Due to have a stint (?) installed in a week! I am not necessarily buying into this 100%. Seems like a conflict with this new medication. Never had a problem and am very healthy, eat right, don't smoke, drink little to nothing and get my share of excerise. Have had high blood pressure for several years which has been treated by meds like lisiniprol and hydrochlorthyzide. Anyone experience this before on this beta blocker? Should I get a 2nd opinion? Worried in VT.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I've been on metoprol 50mg for 8yrs since having 4 stents inserted. don't smoke anymore. drink 2-3 pts of beer everyday. have put on some weight. maybe the beer ! do get quite a bit of exercise daily. also use other drugs to assist. no significant chest discomfort. I'm 67

Answer/Reply:

I am a 70 year old female and do not smoke or drink and look the picture of health. I was also on hydrochlorthyzide and lisiniprol but was changed to metoprolal and also sular, not taken together. I have experienced a pain also but when I mention this, doesn't seem to be a issue with Dr. Have been on this drug for less than a year with check ups pretty often as I am on coumadin also.
A second opinion might be in order and might make you feel more confident. After all, it is your body and YOU are the one going thru the procedure.
Good luck to you-hope you post results from your experience and what you decide.

Hello Sir, I am 45 and had my first heart attact 37 years, 2nd at 42, I take 50mg of metmprolol, along with a shelf full. After my 1st one iI could handle a stress test up to 160, when they are pumping me up. Now I handle about 145 max. Stints now adays are not bad at all I have 8, they are actually making it a one day procedure, if your a good patient and I'm not, my Dr. is Sanfilippo in Jefferson City and I owe him my life twice. I have been all over the emergency room and its no fun, I cannot tell someone what to do, but I would seriously consider it, it does not even hurt.Sincerely MCrawley0963@aol.com

I've been on metoprolol 50 mg for about 5 years now. Take with 160 mg of Diovan for HBP. 53 year old male. I have not notice any side effect at all. Do 2 miles every other day on a tread mill at 3.8 mph for 35 minutes. No pain of any kind.

Answer/Reply:

Hi Worried in VT:

I would sure have my cardiologist do an echocardiogram & a nuclear stress test. If those are inconclusive, then I'd have a heart catheterization before I let them put a stent in. That would show any blockage. Yes, there's risk w/a heart cath, but there's lots of risk w/a stent implant. Hope you do just fine, no matter what you decide.

Answer/Reply:

I thought the sharp pains in my chest was just muscle spasms but now I wonder. My doctor insists that I continue on Toprol XL but after reading alerts I have become scared to continue. I originally started taking it for my racing heart that even wakes me up when I sleep. My family (grandmother, mother, daughter plus me) have or had this problem. My daughter's problem is really bad but she stopped pills because she said these just made it worse.

My doctor says until FDA says its bad and takes it off the market I should continue to take Toprol XL. I am having mixed emotions about this now. I am thinking of weaning myself off shortly and see what happens.

I've been on Metoprolol since '94 and Doc says it's keeping me alive....I'm all for that!!!
To Worried: by all means get a second opinion! That's always our option and it's perhaps safer that way. But as far as your blocked artery....pay attention!
I had severe pain in L arm, lower jaw and pressure in chest and got really scared; took about 4 aspirin, and my husband took me to the ER. By that time, the aspirin (and I bless it daily!) had saved me.They could no longer detect heart attack. After extensive tests and an angiogram, found that I'd had a myocardial infarction and my right coronary artery was 90% blocked. A stent was put in, and in '06 a second stent. So far, so good!
Re the second opinion, the young cardiologist suggested I'd had a bout of acid reflux not a heart attack. I told him I knew the difference between a bellyache and something more serious; that he'd had a lot more schooling that I had, but he hadn't lived in this body for 65 years!!! Thanks to my own doctor, the problem was found and fixed!
Best of luck to you, my friend!!

Answer/Reply:

Update on Worried in Vt with that chest pain and the blockage. Did the cath trick and found a 90% blocked artery feeding the left side of my heart. Couldn't be fixed! Kept over for emergency surgery and had five bypasses two days later. My condition is referred to as the "Widow Maker" so I guess I am grateful for the help I received at the hospital. Been three weeks now and I am recovering quickly. Thank God I went to the Dr. when I did.

Answer/Reply:

Guess you have your stent by now..... or maybe not. Doesn't matter whether or not you drink or smoke or eat healthy, some peoples bodies, (mine) just make extra plague in arteries. Stress, even the little nit picky kind makes it much, much worse. I have taken Toprol since 2004 when I had a heart attack, this is the best one (blood pressure/beta blocker) for me, didn't make me real sleepy like the others. I have four stents now, two in 2004, then another in 2006 and another in 2007. I've learned alot. This IGuard is a great web site to keep your pharmacy honest. Medication can be your friend or kill you. Stick with these guys. They have brought conflicts to my attention that my pharmacy missed, more than once.

Question/Comment:

Anyone out there have itching problems? My head has intense itching. I am trying this medicine again because last time I lost hair on it. I am taking it for skipped beats. So far only on it for 6 days. That is when the intching started. Now I'm worried the hair is going to start. The cardiologist said she didn't feel the hair loss was from the toprel but it stopped once I stopped taking the meds last time.

40 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Hair loss is listed under the more serious not to be tolerated side effects of this drug according to the Wikipedia description. I would definitely mention this to a doctor and monitor your reaction to this drug. Recording anything that might be important to discuss with your doctor. If your doctor will not listen a second opinion may be necessary. Good Luck.

Answer/Reply:

I have been taking Metoprol for over 10 years, and it seems to work in lowering the BP. However, just in this past year I have a SEVERE CASE of ITCHING. The itching started on my legs, then chest and stomach, now on scalp of head. It drives me crazy -- to the point that I use a very still hairbrush as a scratcher. "Must be the dry winter air - try a humidifier." One doctor suggested more baths; another said fewer baths. One said use benadryl lotion; others have routinely said Lanacane, Cortisone, and a plethora of other snake remedies. Now, months later all seem to agree that it is a side effect of one of the many (14 at last count) drugs I am taking for BP, diabetes, gout, and cholesterol. (Dont panic: it's not as bad as it sounds!) But none of them are willing to guess which. (The kidney doctor said surely it was Allopurinal (for gout). I stopped taking it for 3 weeks, with no effect, no change. Voo Doo docs at the mercy of the drug manufacturers.

Answer/Reply:

I'm tellin you it's the beta blocker. I started it for the second time and after 5 days I started with the scalp itching. That night I counldn't control it it was keeping me up. I stopped the medicine the next day and by the following day the itching was gone. I also tried this medicine last April with the same thing but I didn't stop and my hair also started falling out. I thought it was originally my new shampoo but obviously it was the metroprol.

Answer/Reply:

I've experienced the intense itching on my scalp. I actually keep turining on the lamp and night to see if there were bugs crawling on me. The metroprol was to blame.

I am on 1 mg of Ropinirole and 50 mg of Metoprolol and have developed a rash on legs and itching all over. Am currently trying to determine which one is causing the itching. Have you found anything yet?

Answer/Reply:

I just stopped taking Metoprolol Tartrate 50 mg because my hair's falling out. I hope this is the culprit. I had the same problem last year & the demon was hydrochlorothiazide. When I stopped that & went on the Metoprolol, my hair grew back in...for about six mos. Then it started falling out again, so I stopped the Metop. & am trying a new med.

Question/Comment:

Question? I am a 62 year old female. I have high blood pressure. My doctor put me on Metoprolol 50mg. twice a day(Metroprolol ER Tab) along with 20mg. of lisinopril once a day. I have been on this for almost one year. I have had great hair loss and weight gain. I do need help with lowering my blood pressure but I hate the hair loss and weigh gain. What other meds.can I talk to my doctor about? I need to change and do not know what to do.

63 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Sorry about the hair loss. I had the same thing happen to me and the cardiologist said it's not the metroprol but as soon as I stopped my hair loss slowed down. Now they want me to try again but I feel my hair still isn't like it use to be it is thinner. I did try for 5 or 6 days last month but I started with scalp itching and stopped worried that the hair loss would start again. The only thing the cardiologist said I could try instead of the beta blocker is a calcim channel blocker. I take it for pvc (skipped beats). Not for blood pressure problems. Ask if there is anyway you can try that instead. I think the main side affect with that is ankle swelling. I think I would rather have that then no hair. As a women anyway. Good Luck.

Question/Comment:

The only comment/complaint I have about Toprol xl or metoprolol is..... weight gain, weight gain, WEIGHT GAIN. You know I wish I had been told possible side effects before I agreed to the med. Because any medication that has "weight gain potential" is a "red flag" to me, especially since I have hypothyroidism and primary hyperaldoesteronism (sp?) (means overactive adrenal glands). Now it is going to be really interesting trying to get the doctors to change my meds for the better... SIGH

Question/Comment:

Seems like I get no answers when I post. Try again. I am on Toprol Xl and cozaar. Xanax. I am so Depressed. I have heart failure, but no other signs, just my heart was beating wrong and wasn't pumping the blood out all the way. I have a defibulator. I have found myself not being able to make decisions are have a life. I am real have tryed most of the antidepressions. Cann't handle them. Plus I see they mostle interact with my meds. I cann't get past two weeks on 1/4 of the lexapro, Can anyone help me.

57 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I'm sorry you're not getting the answers you're looking for, I get frustrated too when I ask a question and don't get a response! Can you be a little more specific as to what you need help with? Are you trying to figure out what meds you can take?

75 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Hi, yes, guess looking for all kinds of answers. Started having problems back in 1998, 1st, panic attacks...due to a divorce. They gave me xanax, which helped. But, then problems with the hormone replacement therapy they where giving me. Getting off that, having depression, and them trying me on different antidepresins. They even put me on Ritlin...after about a week of that...I quit and was having problems with palpitations and finally went to the er....I just figured it was panic. They told me I had heart failure (2003) and I didn't have Insurance so they gave me meds and told me to go to Galveston and that I would be dead in 2 years. I was put on Remron, which helped alot. But cann't take it now. So, had to work manueal labor off and on during the wait for SSI. Finally had to get a lawyer. Got the SSI in 2007, finally got to see a doctor. They tryed me on Coreg CR. and Altace. I kept telling them I couldn't take the Coreg Cr. It was like when I got up set it would go through my system to fast...causeing more panic. Anyway. had to get of Altace...cough. Went to Houston, got a difibulator....now been on Toprol sents fall. And Cozaar, xanax. Now, they check my Thyroids!!!! They are real low. So, doing more test tomorrow. I shake all the time, sweats....I havn't been able to have a life. Cann't have relationships. Don't talk to anyone. I would like to know how long do you but up with the side effects of an antidepresian....before you know you cann't take it. I live alone and my kids think I am nuts. Maybe I am. I don't even know how to have a relationship or don't even have the will to have one.

57 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Sounds to me as if you are OVERMEDICATED. THis is my opinion. I have the sweats too. Gained so much weight on the Toprol..... Am on an antidepressant for Fibromyalgia also. I too have low thyroid. I personally believe our thyroids were low to begin with. Did you know that heart papilations or irregular heartbeat can be from low thyroid?!?!?! If you are on SSI or SSDI (two types--SSI is "welfare", SSDI is disability you have earned from working), you should be on MEDICAID. If you are on SSDI, you should have MEDICARE AND MEDICAID. And you can get darn good doctors here in the Houston Medical Center thru UT or Baylor--don't even BOTHER with Ben Taub/aka County. I know because I went this route. One small warning: document everything you tell doctors, ALWAYS. And do as much research as you can. If you feel a med isn't right for you, DEMAND A CHANGE or even get OFF of it. You should also be on low sodium diet if you have heart failure.....feel free to contact me off site if you like... deafeskie @ gmail. com (remove spaces).

I am on Metoprolol TA, for hign Blood Pressure, Ambien to help me sleep at night,Xanax for Panic Attacks plus I take Klonapin as an added kind of pick me up if the others dont work. so far it seems to keep me calm enough. once in a while I get a little unruley and go off the deep end, but for the majority things are well controlled now. But it was a 12 year battle trying to find the right combination of meds that worked for me. my advice, be as patient as god allows you to be, it takes time to get you on the right ballence of meds.

Answer/Reply:

Heart failure often causes depression, and it should ease after you've been on the Toprol for a while. However, the Warfarin could aggravate, rather than relieve, the depression. Ask your doctor if it does not get better soon. Think happy thoughts, take walks. God loves you. Do crossword puzzles to keep your mind sharp. And remember: others do care about you.

You might want to check out: www.aboutclay.com and www.livingclay.com. I mixed the powder form with water last night just before going to bed and first thing this morning. The swelling around my knees has gone down some today, and I had real good energy today. The book says if you take medication, do the clay 1-3 hours in between. I have gained 30-35lbs since being on the Metoprolol, which has been about a year or little longer. I have very vivid dreams, and I told the doctor and he claims the metoprolol doesn't have those side effects, and I told him he better get on the internet because there are lots of people that says differently. I eat very healthy, mostly salads. No breads, no fats, no pastas, so I know for sure it is not in my food. It is the darned medication!

Can Metoprolol cause hair loss?

65 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Some of our pediatric patients on high doses of beta blocker therapy for Long QT syndrome did report noticeable hair loss, reported more by adolescent female patients. However, for them it was a choice between the hair issue and an increased potential of sudden cardiac death if they do not take beta blocker therapy..

I had hair loss on this medication. The cardiologist is saying it is my thyroid but when I stopped the medicine the hair loss stopped. Now I am going to try it again and see what happens. I take it for skipped beats. This medicine also makes me tierd and slows my heart rate. I really have to watch because I don't have bp problems and my heart rate is low without the medicine.

I had hair loss, too. Even my eyebrows were coming out bunches at a time. I was taking one pill, twice a day. I cut back to once a day and my hair loss has stopped. I was taking the meds for a pounding racing heart. has really helped. I take the pill late in the afternoon to early evening. That really helps slow my racing heart so i can get through the nite. Also, when I was taking 2 a day, I seemed to be having more flim build up in my throat, causing me to start choking. This has stopped too, since I cut back.

I am a 37 year old female and am also taking Metoprolol. I have mitralvalve prolapse, A-Fib, and a rapid heart rate (185 beats p/m) that seems to spike mostly when I am stressed or anxious. I was on Toprol first but switched to the Metoprolol for the same reason you did, but I am on 100mg twice a day. It has been working pretty good so far. I have not had any increased anxiety issues with this drug.

I have just been diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia. My heart rate goes up and down constantly 50-180's I was put on 50 mg of Metoporolol and 240 mg or Verapamil SA. I want to know if others are taking this same drug combination for Tachycardia and what side effects they have experienced and at what doses. Did this combination seem to work for you... as it seems that it doesn't keep my heart rate down, wears off too soon, and I experience really bad fatigue, nausea, and seems like more unstable heart rate (swinging up and down). Thanks for input.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I sympathize w/ your situation. I have suffered w/ SVT since my first pregnancy 8 years ago. I have been on metropolol off and on w/ good results. If you are extremely fatigued, I would ask about a time-released medication. Also recommend talking to your dr. about adding magnesium supplements, as was told by ER dr. to make sure get ample amounts of this, as nearly impossible to get enough from your diet - also a B Complex for anxiety, etc.
Also recommend eating banana per day for potassium. Also, is there any chance you suffer from sleep apnea? I recently learned I have this, which can be a big contributor to SVT, but was never asked about it before because did not fit the "profile"...I hope this helps. Of course avoid all caffeine and alcohol.

Question/Comment:

Prior to being placed on Metoprolol after having a heart attack, I was prescribed Coreg by my Cardiologist and If you all think Metorolol is bad, the side effects I personally suffered while on Coreg for me were much worse, especially the dizziness, memory loss and depression. I would not for any reason go back on the Coreg.

In my opinion, all Cardiologists should be made to take Coreg for a period of time before being allowed to prescribe it to their patients. I doubt that many would prescribe it. Metoprolol for me is a better choice.

63 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

In reading the above comments on Metoprolol, it seems that the people writing have failed to include the number of milligrams they are taking per day and that does make quite a difference. Age and weight make a difference and one size does not fit all. My cardiologist prescribed one 25 mg. pill twice a day. This dosage caused extreme fatigue. I am a serior lady, weigh 110 and am 5 ft. tall. This was too much and I had it reduced to 25 mg. once a day. That worked.

I can't answer your question per se, I am recovering from a heart attack and I also take metoprolol along with other drugs. I watch my diet and exercise daily. For all that has gone on, I am in good physical shape and have been trying to lose weight and have found that instead of losing weight I have gained five pounds. My guess is, that it is the drugs that have thrown my metabolism out of whack.

I had a heart attack back in 2006 and I had one stent put in. My heart Dr. put me on Metoprolol 25 mg, Simivastin 20 mg, Low Dose Asprin and Plavix. After a year, they took me off the Plavix and recently they lowered my Simivastin dosage to 10 mg. I guess I gained weight also from 130 to 150. I'm still at 150 and eating the rights foods but can't seem to lose any of the weight. But they said at my age that this is how much I should weight, go figure. :-)

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Levitra and Amiodarone for about a year and have had no problem. Last week my heart doctor added 25 mg of Toprol. I asked him if there were any problem with taking these drugs together. He said no as it was a low dose.
For a few days I only took the Amiodarone and Toprol without a problem. The first night I took Levitra with both other drugs I blacked out while getting out of bed to go to the bathroom. I required 6 stitches in my left cheek and had abrasions and lacerations on the inside and outside of my right cheek.
My heart doctor told me to try taking the Toprol in the morning instead of night. I decided not to take it at all.

Answer/Reply:

I have been taking it for years without the side effects you have mentioned. But some of the other medications I take do cause some of those side effects. Your doctor can change the medication to another that may work better for you, there are other options. First thing you need to do is sit down with your doctor and tell him/her EVERY thing going on with you. Is there a chance that you may need an anti-depressant? Only asking please don't be affended.
