Question/Comment:

Hi! 6 years ago I was diagnosed with Polycystic kidneys and from then on I suffered from high bloodpressure. I only 33 years old right now. I took Logimax for 4 years. And for some complaints that I had regarding the medicine, my doctor changed it to (Neobloc 50 mg) which I was currently taking twice a day for 2 years now. I'm experiencing almost all of the side effects that is listed in this page such as slow heart beat, breathlessness, cold sensitivity etc.
I wonder if in the long run will this side effects be harmful to me. But it really helps in lowering my bloodpressure. But when it comes to my body (physically) I'm really concerned about me loosing weight because of loss appetite even if I'm taking multivitamins for weight gain. I just wish there is a way to address my problem. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

Hi,
I am a 62 yo (this month) male who has been taking Metoprolol Tartrate 25 mg since a heart attack in August 2007( 2 tabs twice a day for 3 months, then 1 tab twice a day since). I have had fairly continuous side effects right along of debilitating gas pressure and distention, bowel movements affected, with occasional autonomic nervous system effects. Cardiologist told me to stop med in December of 2008 but we did it too fast and I suffered severe side effects and was put back on same dose (1 tab 2x/day). Stable since then with moderate side effects). But past weekend started new batch of different sized, shaped appearance MT, supposedly same dose. Have been suffering dramatically increased ( 4-5 times strength and intensity)side effects of same nature as above past 48 hours. So watch out for altered pills.

I have been on Lopressor 50mg since i was 19 yrs. old. I have tried several generic brands and they always have bad side effects for me. I have gone back to the brand name everytime. Now i won't even try another generic. I pay for my own meds because insurance will not, but as long as i'm able and know what's best for my self, i will continue to take only the brand name. Be careful!!

I am on Metoprolo tar 50 mg and baby asprin because some time in 2007 or 2008 the dr said that I had a heart attack the cardiologest i saw confermed and said it was a silent heart attack. i am also on singulair and advair for my asthma as well as proair as a rescue inhaler. I now have a problem with my back that has goten worse over the years the recent mri I had showed that I have severe spinal stinosis and degeneritive arthritis as well as degeneritive disc disease.and i am in a lot of pain and just about every pain med i put in to check comes up a 4 or a 5 in the risk ratings what can I safely take for severe cronic pain. I am desprate i cant take the pain much longer and the dr is no help he is afraid that i'll become addicted.i cant keep going to the er and getting 7,000.00 dollar bills for pain relief

For Heaven's sake, go to a pain specialist! You may have to "interview" several before you get one that isn't opiophobic. I'm a 61 year old male and have been on Duragesic patches (generic) for 16 years. YOU DON'T NEED TO BE IN CHRONIC PAIN!! Log onto www.painmed.org The American Academy of Pain Medicine. Study it CAREFULLY and they will help you through the "minefield".

61 year old Male – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

Please go see the "pain mananegment" doc's, I have had cronic pain for back (severe) for 10 years, go through the same "dependent" argument.... the only ones that can get the pain medication are the kids that don't need it... There is a patch --fda approved for shingles... but i use it for back pain along with the genic duragesic patches that the other response spoke of... these LIDODERM patches (5%) give me more relief than any other medication... they can have effect on heart, but your doctor should be able to say if it is ok to use... some insurances will not cover, because the fda use is shingles, not back pain... when you use them it takes a while for your body to absore the maxium level... they have a web site that is very useful, you wear them for 12 hours on, then 12 hours off.... give them a couple of days, or a week don't judge just from the first day or so... if i had to use ONLY one med it would be the Lidoderm.... the pain management doctors are much better at "pain medication" my dr. gave me a week supply to try and my insurance does pay for it, the web site has a chat area and that were i heard people writing in about it having to be prescribed for "shingles" if you happen to try the duragisc patchs... stay with Generic and try the ones manufactured by "MYLAN" they are much more confortable and i think safer that the larger Brand ones.. the brand fall off "a-lot" found my dog wearing mine once... the generic name is "fentanyl" i have also just started accupuncture and it seems to be helping.. pain is better (some) but i like myself better when i am at a high pain level that the meds aren't controling.... good luck

Question/Comment:

I am a 58 yr. old female. I started taking Torprol XL 50mg then 100mg due to the fact that I fell & fractured my wrist & had to sit for over a yr. & put on 50lbs. No matter what I did I could not lose weight. I was walking 4.8 miles a day before I fell. Then I started to get a pain in my left foot. Dr. took x-ray said it was arthritis! My insticts told me different. Since I wasn't working & not under as much stress I deceided to ween myself off since the recall anyways & the pain in my foot went away! So now I am going to attack any further high blood pressure I have the all natural way. I had to learn to meditate due to the pain in my wrist to get off of the high doses of the pain medicine I was taking & I believe this has also helped my blood pressure as I had always had low blood pressure before the fall. Proper diet, exercise & meditation! Trust me! :-)

Hmmm are you a male or female? You state you are a 58 yr. old female yet sign as a 57 yr old male. I have been taking Toprol XL 50 mg 1x a day for over 10 years. I am a 68 yr old female. I have talked with many women from 55 to 80 about weight gain after menopause regardless of the meds they are taking. It's a fact of life and one has to accomodate ones' caloric intake and adjust the amount of exercise, and kinds of exercise to adjust to the tendency to put on weight. I also don't understand why you had to sit for over a year when it was your wrist that was injured, not your feet or legs. As for the pain in your foot, have you been tested for osteoporosis? I had a similiar complaint while exercising ( walking ) and it turned out to be osteoporosis. Staying off your foot for a long time would help the pain go away. In that you can control your blood pressure naturally is wonderful! I take Toprol to control the symptoms of Mitrol Valve Prolapse and am VERY grateful for an effective medication, and have often wished there was some natural way to address the very uncomfortable effects of MVP. Good Luck to you.

Hi, I take metropolo tartrate I do not have any side effects, but I also take effxor and welbutrin, I am never hungry, but I have gained weight I think I eat one meal a day and lovastatin I am not hungry

52 year old Female – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

You need to eat more often to keep your metabolic rate up to par. I realize it is difficult to eat so at times but breakfast got its name because it is a BREAK from FASTing. Keep almonds in a sm baggie. Eat 10 every couple of hours. Peanut butter on apples, if you can manage the time ,is also a great source of protein with a little something sweet. If allergic to nuts, cheese is ok but constipating and fatty( bad cholesterol ). Farmers cheese might work for you. Also, the Welbutrin as well as many anti depressants can cause wgt. gain. You and your doctor have to figure out what is best for you.

I take metoprolol ..75mgs. 2 times a day and digoxin and I gained 50 lbs. while taking Paxil..at the same time. When the doseage was raised to 60 mgs., I tried to commit suicide. I obviously didn't die but went off Paxil. I am now on lexapro and have not gained any weight, nor have I had any suicidal thoughts. I would stay away from Paxil. No side effects from the heart meds.

I am hearing they recalled Toporal XL as I checked it on this site I see it is for the medicine made by ETHEX not Astra Zeneca. I know it may be hard for us older Americans to afford our meds BUT did you know that depending on your monthly income you may be eligible to get meds from the drug companies direct and free?? Find out what company makes your meds , go to their web site and check out the Patient Assistance Program (or Foundation) and download and print application. I get my Toporal from Astra Zeneca, Norvasc from Pfizer and Monopril and Pravachol from Bristol Meyers. Some of my meds I get from Wal-Mart for $4.00 so I have quit getting them from the drug company. But check it out I am sure you have seen Montel Williams on TV talk about the patient assistance program. It sure is worth looking into. you must send in a perscription with the request.

I've been taking toprol XL for just a couple of months due to increased pressure in the Left Ventrical. I have noticed that during my menstral cycle my pulse rate drops significantly, not sure why this would happen, some what concerning.

48 year old Female – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

I have been taking toprol XL for about 6 months now for sinus tachycardia and other rhythm disturbances and it has worked quite well. I, too, also suffer from extreme pulse rate drops to 54 bpm. and very low drops to 90/58 when I am menstruating. I feel very fatigued, and cold and clammy, but no dizziness or unsteadiness. I mentioned this my cardiologist and he didn't seem concerned, or able to give me an answer. This certainly this can't be normal, can it? I wonder how many other woman who are taking this are suffering from this?

42 year old Female – Source: iGuard

iGuard Answer/Reply:

The symptoms you are describing, the fatigue, cold sensitivity, low blood pressure and slow pulse rate, are all common side effects of Toprol XL. Up to 3% of patients experience these side effects. Sometimes, they will decrease over time. However, if you are experiencing an increase in your symptoms with your menstrual period and they are affecting your quality of life, you need to discuss your concerns and symptoms with your physician and discuss the timing of the symptoms. It is possible that you have another condition, such as an anemia, during your menstrual period that is contributing to the increase in side effects during that time.

Thanks for the info on how to get drugs from the manufacturer...I will try it.

By the way, did you see the posting on iGuard that Ethex, Tartrate, Succinate, and all extended release Metoprolols were recalled? I was given Metoprolol recently but the side effects were too hard to deal with so I am now trying Coreg CR., which still gives me some uncomfortable side effects, but it's much better than Metoprolol for me. I may even change to Atenolol if doctor okays it.

Question/Comment:

I have been on Metoprolol tartrate 50 mg at first, and I started losing my appetite, then started losing weight. So my doctor changed the mg's to 25, and I am still losing weight, and still do not have a appetite, and he says it is not the medicine. I have had mri's and cat scans to see if anything else was going on, and they have found nothing. I found out on my own, that if I take the pill at night, I have an appetite all day, but I am still losing weight. Has anyone else had this problem. I really would like to know. I have an appointment with my doctor on Friday, and I will discuss this with him.

I started going to Curves to work out and it has helped I have lost inches {about 7} and not so much in weight but feel stronger. Try working out if you can because you will feel better. Please don't be so quick to make statements you have not researched.
The following is clearly found on the Toprol-XL web site.

There is a risk of worsening cardiac failure during up-titration of the dose of metoprolol succinate extended-release. Patients need to consult their physicians if they experience signs or symptoms of worsening heart failure such as weight gain or increased shortness of breath.

Check with your Doctor. I found that the toprol xl I was taking has lowered my pulse rate so much I turned into a couch potato this past winter. I am just now adjusting the meds and will see if this helps.
FYI-I was at 100mg daily weighing 225--pulse rate was 40. There could also be many other underlings causes as well but dont stop telling your DR until he/she hears exactly what you are saying.

I also find that at night after working all day my ankles swell and my socks leave indentations in my ankles. I too have experienced weight gain. After reading this I believe it is do to the medication. I was taking it one time a day then after a trip to the hospital with heart aritmia and a four day stay there, they uped my dose to 2 50mg tablets daily. Since the switch from name brand to the generic I went from a petite size 6 and I now am in a 12. The medication is the only change in my life style. I just thought it was age catching up with me.

49 year old Female – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

The switch from brand to generic is not what caused you to gain weight, it was the increase in dose of the medication. Brand and generic prescriptions have to act exactly the same in the body, including how it is absorbed in order to be considered equivalent.

31 year old Female – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

Brand and generic medications are not the same. The fillers and binders used in the production of generics are usually different from the brand name. These fillers and binders cause different effects in the body. The chemical structure of the active ingredient is "supposed" to be the same however. The FDA tests for molecularly equivilent active ingredients but does not take into account different fillers and binders that may make the drugs work differently in the body.

I have been on Metoprolol 50 mg for about a month. I was started on Lasix for about 2 weeks now. I also take Diovan Hct 320/25 and Norvasc. Since starting on Metoprolol, I have been experiencing dizziness, tiredness, and some wheezing. As time went on, I started having rapid heartbearts and chest pains (could be due to starting the Lasix). My doctor does not want to change my medications. The only thing she says is to take half the Lasix and take the Norvasc at night. I really want to stop the Metoprolol. Can someone advise me what I should do? Right now I'm typing and my chest is just sore from having chest pains earlier today. I saw the doctor two days Wednesday and today is Friday. I have had the same problems you are having since I was started on Metoprolol. I got so weak, tired and dizzy that all I did was lie on the sofa all day, sleeping alot and sleeping in bed at night. My girlfriend is a nurse, and she told me one day that she was going to help take care of me since the doctors were letting me die. She said I was white as a sheet, my blood pressure was always too high or too low, I was dehydrated, and losing a lot of weight. The first thing she did was get me started on Gator Aid, and Smart Water. They both have needed electrilites in them. I had to drink 2 bottles in one day, which I hated. By that night I was feeling better. She then got my to take a bubble bath in the jet tub. After the bath I did feel better and the next day I was starting to feel my old self again. Try Gator Aid, especially with Lasix, since it drains your fluid and electrolites with it. Ask your doctor before you drink it though. There may be a reason he doesn't give you electrolites.

Are you taking a combination Metoprolol? There is a difference in the reaction between the Metoprolol Tartrate and the Metoprolol Succinate ( I think I spelled that correctly) To put it in brand names, the difference between Toprol and Lopressor, they aren't the same. So it may not be the Metoprolol but the other drug that is combined with it... I personally hope the at Toprol XL is brought back soon because Lopressor didn't work well on me when I was younger let alone now that I am in my 40's.

Member Answer/Reply:

YES! I too was on Toprol for a few years, and I felt fine. I had to switch due to the recall, and I started on Lopressor 50 mg about 1 month ago. I had to see my Doctor yesterday because I have been feeling so crummy: Weakness, dizziness, sweaty, cold and clammy skin, rapid heart rate, yet my blood pressure is about 100/60. As the evenings progress, my BP drops to around 88/55. I always felt faint. So, Last Wednesday, I called my Dr. and she told me to stop taking it. I spent the last week dealing with my bp jumping all over the place - I'm beat! So, I went to see her, and she told me to just take 1/2 pill at night. I am afraid to start it again... Even though I hadnt taken a pill in 9 days, i still get the extremely low numbers and associated symptoms. Please bring back Toprol XL!!! Thanks!

Weight gain has been reported in approximately 10% of iGuard member who took Toprol. There are many causes of weight gain such as a change in diet, descreased activity level, thyroid condition or drug induced. It is a good idea to discuss this problem with your doctor to find out the cause of the weight gain and to manage it properly.

I am a 58 year old woman and have been 200 mg. for more than a year and also have experienced weight gain even though I have altered my eating habbits to eat considerable less the what most have called eating like a bird. To date I have gone from 115 to 128 but was as high as 132. Which by the way doesn't look good on someone who is 4' 11 1/2" tall. I have had a persistent cough, hair loss, sleeping problems and tingling around my mouth...but I feel wonderful. I also am taking Spironolact 25mg: Lisinopril 20 mg: Simvastation 40 mg.:Folic Acid 1 mg.: Singulair 10 mg. and Premarin 1.25 mg.
Here is the best explaination I have found on Metoprolol side effects:

METOPROLOL-ORAL (cont.)

SIDE EFFECTS: You may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, tiredness, diarrhea, unusual dreams, trouble sleeping, or vision problems as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This drug may reduce blood flow to your hands and feet, causing them to feel cold. Smoking may worsen this effect. Dress warmly and avoid tobacco use. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: symptoms of a very slow heartbeat (e.g., persistent dizziness, fainting, unusual fatigue), bluish discoloration of the fingers and toes, numbness/tingling/swelling of the hands or feet, decreased sexual ability, reversible hair loss, mental/mood changes, trouble breathing, cough, unexplained or sudden weight gain, increased thirst, increased urination. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Question/Comment:

I have suspicion that Metropolol is causing my weight gain. I can see that this is one of the side effects. My diet has not changed in the 3 years I have been on Metropolol yet my weight has gradually gone up.

Last August I stepped up my workout regime to 4 times a week with plenty of cardiovascular work in each workout. At my last Dr. checkup, the weight had gone up 4 poiunds. I would like to hear if others on Metropolol are experiencing the same problem. It seems the harder I workout, the more the weight goes on; and I don't believe it is all muscle.

58 year old Male – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

I think that your suspicion is probably right. I've thought the same thing myself. I am in my early 50's and have been on metoprolol for about 5 years. During that time I have noticed that weight seemed to go on a lot easier, I think due to the medication in part (In my case age and hormones may play a part also). The metoprolol was perscribed for me because of a rapid heartbeat, no actual heart problem or high blood pressure. About 2 years ago, I decided to seriously "attack" my weight problem and through really hard work & diligent food management I was able to lose 20 pounds over 6 months time. I felt great and at a yearly checkup with my primary care doctor asked him if he thought I could cut my metoprolol pills(50mg taken twice a day) in half each time(25 mg & 25mg). He agreed, so I tried it. I kept up with my exercise routine & diet and dropped more weight that seemed to come off easier.I would suggest that you talk with your doctor and see if you are taking too high of a mg pill.
It does slow down the heartrate (and I assume the metabolism). Don't try anything on your own without checking with your doctor first, but suggest it to him. See what happens.

I am a 55 year old female and have gained about 10 pounds in the last 6 months. I just saw this note about weight gain with Metropolol. And my weight gain coincides with the change from Toprol XL to the generic Metropolol. My diet has not changed and I work out 4 to 5 times a week so I could not figure out why I was gaining weight.

I just recently renewed my prescription and I specifically told my doctor I did not want the generic substitute for Toprol XL because of the size of the tablet. Then I came home and had the letter about Metropolol being recalled and found these comments about weight gain.

I was put on Metoprolol about a year ago due to heart palpatations. During that time I took it which was about 8 months, I gained 15 lbs. (on my 5'2 frame) but didn't attribute it to the meds. I am hypoglycemic, so I am very aware of everything I eat and my sugar levels and I don't eat a lot of junk. The last couple of months I was taking it, I experienced dizziness, depression, extreme fatigue and other symptoms of the like. My doc decided to wean me off the Metoprolol due to those symptoms. That was in Oct. I had a follow up appt in Dec. and had dropped 4 lbs. Yay! It was only then that I realized the med. had caused my weight gain. Over the past 4 months, I have dropped the 15 lbs. without changing my diet or exercise regimen at all. Just happy to be off the med. and my weight down and most importantly, I feel a heck of a lot better. The heat palpatations have not returned as of yet and is being monitored. In my opinion, not a very good medication to take!

Weight gain is a side effect of any beta-blocker. Metoprolol is supposed to be more cardiac specific so it should have less side effects than others like Atenolol. It really comes down to your body and how it reacts to the drug. Try increasing your fiber and water intake if it slows down your digestion as that may be the cause of the weight gain. The longer food remains in your small intestines the more absorption increases and can lead to weight gain without any changes in diet.

Question/Comment:

I am a 30 year old female with high bp off and on for 10 years. Oct 2008 found out that my heart rate was fast. My Dr. started me on 50 mg Metoprolol and 25 mg HCTZ. After a few more appointments increased Met. to 100 mg in morning and another 50 at night. For the last 2 weeks I have had pain/pressure in left side of chest, upper back, shoulder, and neck. Dr. is unsure the cause. Put me on Prilosec and sending me to Cardiologist for stress test/ echo cardiogram. Also being tested for tumors on adrenal glands. Nights seem to bring on symptoms. Wake up frequently with pain, shaking, vivid dreams, left arm/shoulder tingling, and/or racing heart. Confused if these are symptoms or side effects.

31 year old Female – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

Vivid dream are one of the side effects of Metoprolol. Shaking, tingling or racing heart could also be anxiety attacks. Go to the cardiologist so they can straigten everything out. I find I feel worse at night and sometimes wake up with the racing heart and tingling in my hands. I think I may be having some anxiety with my palpitation problems.

40 year old Female – Source: iGuard

Member Answer/Reply:

Thank you for your reply. I was thinking that I could be having anxiety attacks, too. It seems that if that is what I am experiencing it is only when my blood pressure is really high. I haven't done much research into that yet, to see if the two are related. It really is a horrible feeling...unlike anything that I have felt before!

31 year old Female – Source: iGuard

You need to see a cardiologist. I have supraventricular tachycardia that was masked by metoprolol for many years. (Supraventricular Tachycardia also known as SVT makes your heart go fast.) The cardiologist will have to do tests to find out if this is what you have. I was 28 when I was diagnosed. (I am 35 now, and my SVT is controlled by medication....)

This past November, I begtan to occasionally experience shortness of breath and sharp pains in my chest. By the end of January these symptoms were occuring with enough frequency that I decided to see my doctor. I had a normal ekg, my blood work looked great and I have no family history of premature heart desease. I'll be doing a stress test next week, but my doctor just can't believe I would have heart desease considering my age and health condition. This drug recall has me wondering if the Metoprolol has brought on these symptoms. I'm in the process of trying to report my symptoms to the Ethex Corp.

Try adding an extra pillow, and if you are having pain in your chest, neck, and upper back, you need to go to an emergency room. And wow, that is a lot of Toprol, aren't you super sleepy? Most women's heart problems are on the right side of the heart, who knows why. I hope you get a good cardiologist. If the stress test and the echo doesn't show anything, and this keeps up, INSIST on a catherization so they can go in there and find out what it is. I kept playing their game of non invasive tests for over a year, finally had a heart attack, then they decided maybe I really did have pain in my chest.

Hi Worried in VT:

I would sure have my cardiologist do an echocardiogram & a nuclear stress test. If those are inconclusive, then I'd have a heart catheterization before I let them put a stent in. That would show any blockage. Yes, there's risk w/a heart cath, but there's lots of risk w/a stent implant. Hope you do just fine, no matter what you decide.

I thought the sharp pains in my chest was just muscle spasms but now I wonder. My doctor insists that I continue on Toprol XL but after reading alerts I have become scared to continue. I originally started taking it for my racing heart that even wakes me up when I sleep. My family (grandmother, mother, daughter plus me) have or had this problem. My daughter's problem is really bad but she stopped pills because she said these just made it worse.

My doctor says until FDA says its bad and takes it off the market I should continue to take Toprol XL. I am having mixed emotions about this now. I am thinking of weaning myself off shortly and see what happens.

To Worried: by all means get a second opinion! That's always our option and it's perhaps safer that way. But as far as your blocked artery....pay attention!
I had severe pain in L arm, lower jaw and pressure in chest and got really scared; took about 4 aspirin, and my husband took me to the ER. By that time, the aspirin (and I bless it daily!) had saved me.They could no longer detect heart attack. After extensive tests and an angiogram, found that I'd had a myocardial infarction and my right coronary artery was 90% blocked. A stent was put in, and in '06 a second stent. So far, so good!
Re the second opinion, the young cardiologist suggested I'd had a bout of acid reflux not a heart attack. I told him I knew the difference between a bellyache and something more serious; that he'd had a lot more schooling that I had, but he hadn't lived in this body for 65 years!!! Thanks to my own doctor, the problem was found and fixed!
Best of luck to you, my friend!!

I have been taking Metoprol for over 10 years, and it seems to work in lowering the BP. However, just in this past year I have a SEVERE CASE of ITCHING. The itching started on my legs, then chest and stomach, now on scalp of head. It drives me crazy -- to the point that I use a very still hairbrush as a scratcher. "Must be the dry winter air - try a humidifier." One doctor suggested more baths; another said fewer baths. One said use benadryl lotion; others have routinely said Lanacane, Cortisone, and a plethora of other snake remedies. Now, months later all seem to agree that it is a side effect of one of the many (14 at last count) drugs I am taking for BP, diabetes, gout, and cholesterol. (Dont panic: it's not as bad as it sounds!) But none of them are willing to guess which. (The kidney doctor said surely it was Allopurinal (for gout). I stopped taking it for 3 weeks, with no effect, no change. Voo Doo docs at the mercy of the drug manufacturers.
