Question/Comment:

My son is 30 years old and he takes carbidopa/levodopa 25/100 2 tablets 3 times a day.I would like to know if you are taking it for freeze and falls or movement disorder because he has been taking for over a year now and he still falls down. The nerologist said it would'nt stop the freeze and falls but it would help maybe 50% and that is also because she does't know what this is yet but she said it's not parkinsons diease. My sons falls down as if you chopped a tree down and his body can't move to hold on he just goes down what ever is there he lands on it.What medication could he take to control the falls?Could this be the cause another medication he is taking he takes risperidone 0.25mg one a day and also lorazepam 0.5mg one three times a day.

I am 67 yrs old and was diagnosed with parkinson's in 1999. I have been on carbidopa/levodopa 2 tablets 5 x a day and mirapex (1 tablet 3 x a day. for the last 3 yrs. I suffer from freeze, not able to lift my legs very high, light-headedness, not sleeping well at night, but sleeping too much in the daytime and shufflng. Sometimes I can run but not walk. I can operate power tools if I am very careful, but climbing ladders is dangerous. I use a walker to get around.

I live alone so I have to be very careful about everything I do.

The dosage I am taking now helps most of the time. I think stress defeats the benefits from meds, so it is important to keep stress level down. I am healthy otherwise and also take supplements, vitamins, etc. I am willing to try anything except the brain surgery.

Medicare has removed mirapex from it formulary so my pharmacist company dosn't carry it any more. I'm not sure how I will do if I can't get it anymore. There is a generic for mirapex (ropinirole) that has the brand name of (Requip). I read the side effects of taking it and I'm not too happy. Up until now I have had little side effects from the meds and dosage I'm taking.

My husband is now 65 & has been diagnosed with Parkinsons since 1991. He use to take Mirapex but now takes Comtan along with the sinemet & other meds which works well for him, however, he has had the Deep Brain Stimulation surgery which did wonders for him. He does not have tremor but has rigidty & was having freezeups before the surgery.

Answer/Reply:

I take carbidopa/levodopa 25/100 for tremors and restless leg syndrome. It does seem to help my legs, but as far as tremors. I really think that my tremors are hereditary, not sure if anything would help. I do also take 1 mg of Xanax a night to help with it. But I have an anxiety problem and also take Paxil 30 mg.
I had tried every medicine under the sun before I found Paxil. And I love Paxil. i don't have near as many panic attacks. And I have been taking Paxil & Xanax for over 10 years and they have seemed to control my anxiety/panic better than any other medicine I have tried.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking this for the last five years for RLS. Prior to taking it, I would have a hard time falling asleep due to having to move my legs to make the creepy feeling go away. I don't have that problem any longer.
My husband recently started to take it as well. He has a very severe case that causes him to twitch and jump from head to toe. I had suggested he ask his pcp about it but he didn't feel he had a problem. He also snores loudly as well. He didn't believe how much his constant movement was affecting his ability to sleep until after he started to take Sinemet. He now sleeps much better.

Question/Comment:

I have been on this medication for about 3 years. I have periodic leg movement, which keeps me from sleeping. It is severe. I thought if two pills worked, four would work better. Fortunately, I found a wonderful doctor who is willing to monitor me. It turns out taking too much causes a rebound effect which makes your legs kick all the time. No good. I am now taking two pills at 5:30 and one just before sleep. It seems to work well. 68 year young lady.

I.ve been on other drugs and they caused compulsive behavior not so with this drug however be sure to keep track of your blood pressure. Mine had been under control for yewars and when I started taking this I wasn't told about this possible side effect and My blood pressure was dangerously High for months and I thought my dizziness and headaches were because I was being weaned off of one medication and the new one had not taken effect. I was actually dirving a vehicle with a blood pressure of 210/157. The side effect I later found out could have cause damage to other organs of my body. The side effect is easily treatable just let your doctor know about it.
