Question/Comment:
I was under the impression that celebrex was no longer available and that it has been taken off the market along with prexige ....I used it and found that they worked very well when it was available.....since then after numerous trials of other pain medications I have ended up with, tramadol, tramacet, and meloxicam.
I have osteoarthritis in my hands, left foot and toe, both knees and 3 bulging discs in my back.
So far the pain is under control somewhat but I sure don't like taking these medications. I am almost afraid to come off them to try something else. It has been suggested to me to try tylenol,is anyone on it for severe pain.

Question/Comment:
I have had osteoarthritis in my hips and knees since I was 18. After serving in the Army for ten years, and running miles and miles the pain is a bit more intense. Over the last 3 years, and after having 4 kids, I have resumed hiking, martial arts, and weight training. I still cannot run, it just hurts too bad. To relieve pain I take 800mg motrin, once a day, and 3000mg Fish oil. I began taking Co Q10 about 3 months ago but do not feel a big difference with that. If I stick to weight bearing exercises I'm good. If I hike mountains I'm good. But more then 4 hours/week of martial arts kills. I have not progressed to perscription pain relievers yet. Instead I opted for weight loss. Over the last year I have dropped 50 pounds on the Hcg diet (the original Dr. Simeon). While on this I had no pain at all. Hcg completely took my joint pain away.

I am a 42 year old athlete and I think I've had oseteoathritis in my hip joints for a few years. I have a diagnosis of moderate osteo and am doing everything I can to work with the challenge: Glucosamine/condroitine, clebrex 100mg, Vit D, E, Multi, C, Berry antioxidents, fish oil, a recommended special diet, yoga 3/week, bike 3/week, swim 2/week, paddle 2/week, rock climb 3/week, meditation, self hypnosis, chyro x2/month, physio x2/month, massage x2/month, 1-1 psychotherapy (for depression). I work with a sports medicine MD and naturopath. My goals are: reduce pain, reduce inflamation, extend mobility, reduce disease progression and to be able to train. After 4 months of transition from racing (e.g.600km mountain bike races, 60km adventure races, half marathon trail races etc) and working on changing my focus -- ie no more running and intense training - I feel like I am making progress (little pain, little inflamation, able to train more) -- but I feel like I am not getting any more mobility or range of movement -- is there anything I can do to my range of movement in my hip joints -- I feel like I have seran wrap around my hips and can barley tie my own shoes ;( ?

Answer/Reply:
I dont see weight training on your list of things to do. Weight-bearing exercise at least twice a week has really helped my joints feel better. My running years were not marathons, but they were 2-5 miles 4-5 times a week, along with other crazy things like road marches and jumping out of perfectly good aircraft. Now, no more running for me. I do love to hike, climb, bike, and practice martial arts. None of these things can I do without lifting weights twice a week and stretching. and of course hot baths in Epsom Salts and 800 mg of motrin after training.

I am a 62 year old female and have been on Celebrex for about 5 years. I just tried to go off of it because of the cost, I tried OTC's and none worked like Celebrex, I have so much less pain with it. Have not tried Mobic.

Question/Comment:
I am a 49 year old female with arthritis in my lower back. I was taking 200 mg of celebrex. For me it was a wonder drug. The best one was vioxx but I became alergic to it. I have switched to Mobic because of insurance reasons and it seems to work better for me than the celebrex. I also take osteo biflex a multi vitamin 1000 mg of calcium with vitamin D in it and asprin and I so far have not had no side affects on either the celebrex or the mobic. I swear by celebrex and if it still keeps working the mobic. the best of Mobic is it is only $4.00 a month compared to 125 for celebrex. Hope this is a help to all of you.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking Mobic for less than a year and really and, at the time, I am still experiencing a lot of pain. In fact, the pain seems to be getting worst. I have also been prescribed Vicodin and take that at night so that I can at least get a little sleep at night and that seems to help a little.

What About Certo and grape juice for arthritis relief???

Answer/Reply:
I have been using the certo (surejell) and grape juice for a while. I have arthritis in my hands and feet and decided not to get on the medication wheel! I use a tumbler glass size of grape juice and two heaping spoonfuls of surejell (I us powder) and tried this twice a day for 1 week (was very uncertain how this would work) I knew that it would not hurt me, so decided to give it a try, and was pleasantly surprised! I now use it 1-3 times a week depending on how I feel, and only use Aleve when needed (I was using aleve at least once a day). I'm not sure how it works or why, but told my mother and mother-inlaw and they have tried it and their joints feel better. It is at least worth a try. I am sure the doctors don't want to hear about this!

Has this medication done some good for you? You didn 't say.
I take Celebrex and liquid Chondrotin and Glucosamine but still have a problem with my knees. I have gone to a gym and done some exercising from a cd at home but the knees still hurt if I sit still for a time - and kneeling is almost impossible. Don't want to have surgery and am told that exercise will strengthen the muscle but as I said - I have a lot of problems after exercise.

Question/Comment:
I have been prescribed Celebrex for at least the past 3 yrs for severe osteoarthritis pain, taking the maximum dose prescribed (750mg twice a day). I developed GERD as a side effect and am taking Zegrid once/day at bed time for that problem. Thankfully, it is very effective. However, the Celebrex, being an NSAID, creates moderately severe fluid retention in my extremities as soon as hot weather starts. This year, I put on 10 pounds of excess fluid in a week, enough to give me an additional unexpected pleural effusion. I am now better, a week later. I have decreased the Celebrex by half, and increased the frequency of short-acting morphine sulfate under my doctor's supervision. There is nothing in the NSAID literature about edema as a side effect (that I could find very easily). In my case, the benefit of the Celebrex outweigh the side effect of edema. Other NSAIDs tried were not as effective in controlling the arthritis pain. Is my problem unusual? Thank you.

Having suffered with neck/shoulder/back pain due to OA I recently found out that switching to Alleve was not a good thing because even with taking Lasix 40mg, I had a 25 pound water weight gain (285-310) in a few days. I had to go back to Xtra Strength Tylenol and Vicoden (w/acetemine). My quiery now is continued safe weight loss before surgury on my neck to replace vertebrae. My total neck is arthritic and my Dr. said I need the surgur soon, but he recommended lap band surgury first.

Answer/Reply:
Aleve caused me to have a skin disease called Lakin Planus. It was an outbreak of a red rash like substance that took weeks to clear up. I saw a dermatologist who said this rash was definitely an allergy to Aleve. Take all NSAID drugs with great precaution. Exercise so helps with osteoarthritis, especially stretches every morning and biking on a recumbrent bike. Don't fall victim to a drug cycle. Also, pressure point therapy works wonders as it is the covering over your muscles (facia) that gets iritated and with simple pressure point therapy you would be amazed at how much better you can feel. Move it or lose it!
