i am 68 and am taking januvia and glyburide. januvia knocks my blood sugar up and down. if i only take the glyburide and no januvia my blood sugar has a tendency to be lower than with both. when i take januvia alone as prescribed, 1 a.m. and 2 at p.m., when i check my sugar it is over 200. when i don't take januvia and only the glyburide my sugar is about 156. question, why the difference?

Answer/Reply:
Every time you eat your sugar level will rise. You take insulin too control the rise. If you take too much insulin your sugar will drop too far. Get with your Dr. and or diabetic nurse and have them teach you how to use insulin. 73 year old male. Have type 2 for 10 years and keep it in tight control.

I am on tarka, lorcet ,calcuim, fish oil, zocor, and vesicare, and I am going through a period of low potassuim, could these medicationss cause this problem, could blood sugars react to low potassuim, no body seemd to know?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
The medications you have listed do not cause low potassium. In fact, Tarka can cause your body to retain potassium. Blood sugars and potassium are related. Eating foods high in potassium may raise blood sugars. Some foods that are high in potassium are: bananas, potatoes, sweet potatoes. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your potassium and blood sugar levels and what might be causing the changes in your potassium and blood sugar levels.

Answer/Reply:
I think that there is still so much not known about diabetes especially when it comes to individuals. My readings sometimes go as high as 280 and I feel fine, or it can go as low as 70 (rare) and I still feel fine. But, if you're having shakes at 120, which is supposed to be normal, it might not be normal for you. I don't like insulin, so why not suggest Janumet to your doctor? it's a combinaton drug of Januvia and Metformin and works just as well. Good luck.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Eating frequent, smaller meals (every few hours) can help to keep your blood sugar more stable. Concentrate on the protein part of your diet as that is broken down more slowly, also helping your blood sugar to remain more stable. Please contact your doctor and possibly a dietician to discuss a meal plan and options to keep your blood sugar normal and to control your symptoms.
Posted: 2009-06-20 23:08:21
Answer/Reply:
I am not sure from your question if you are diabetic or not. I guess part of the answer either way is the same. Like the iGuard answer said, eat small meals throughout. I would not go more than 2 hours without some food. Another important thing, watch the carbs. If you are diabetic and just having episodes of low blood sugar, talk with your health care providers about adjusting your medication dosage or schedule.
If you are not diabetic, but have hypoglycemia, you need to watch your carbs (especially refined carbs). Try to eat complex carbs, and be sure to have some protein with any carbs you eat. In a person with hypoglycemia, carbs make your sugar go up and then drop too fast. I had this for YEARS and then eventually I developed type 2 diabetes. I wish I would have controlled my diet better back then. I personally think it would have kept me from becoming diabetic, but maybe I just have the tendency in my body.

is having low blood sugar consider having diabetes
30 year old Female

Answer/Reply:
No. Diabetes is high blood sugar. However, people with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can end up with diabetes. I did.
The diet that works for diabetes - moderate carb intake and making more of your carbs complex, plus spacing food intake out more throughout the day - is the best way to keep hypoglycemia under control.

Has anyone taken Alpha-Liponic Acid and has it worked for diabetes. I just atarted Amaryl and it made my blood glucose levels way too low...I was feeling terrible.
63 year old Female
Posted: 2009-05-19 12:13:45
iGuard.org Answer/Reply:
Alpha-lipoic acid is a natural fatty acid that can be found in foods like yeast, spinach, broccoli, and liver.
It is also sold as an herbal product. It is not regulated or approved by the FDA at this time.
Alpha-lipoic acid should not be used as a replacement for diabetes medications prescribed by your doctor. There are dozens of FDA approved effective prescription medications for controlling blood sugar and regulating your diabetes. If you are concerned about your current medications, please discuss your concerns with your physician. Since herbal products can interact with your medications or worse certain medical conditions, please also talk to your doctor about any herbal medications you are considering taking.

No help from me, but I feel your pain! I went from metformin (causing diarrhea) to Janumet (contains Januvia, which causes diarrhea, plus metformin). Plus I take Nexium which also has the potential to cause diarrhea, and now Enalapril, which - you guessed it - can also cause it. I don't have true diarrhea really, just urgency and loose stools. I have to rush to the bathroom pretty often! But I guess as long as the meds are helping my blood sugar and stomach problems, it is worth it.

I too have diabetes. Lately I learned about cinnamon capsules that you can buy at the drug store, very inexpensive. I have been taking this for 20 days now and it reduced my sugar by 20 and 25 points.
I told my friend about it and hers had been running over 200 for a week .She is on medication. It is now running less that 100 in the mornings She just called me to thank me again. I dont know how long this will last. You have to eat things on the diabetes diet. not splurge on foods, which also helps.

I have predisone induced Diabetes 2. I have been on insulin for several years. My Dr. switched me to Byetta this past year. It did nothing for my glucose but getting off of insulin and predisone I lost 20 pounds. My blood sugar fluctuates from high in the morn. to sometimes low or normal before dinner. I am not on any special diet. I try to watch what I eat. I could have a hefty lunch and my blood sugar is near normal, if I eat light my numbers go quite high. I am confused. I am now trying herbs and fiber(with My DR. permission) If herbs do not work I will have to try metformin. I do wish i did not have to take any meds. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

My Husband has type 2 diabetes and only takes glyburide once a day. He could not keep his glucose reading below 150 until he tried taking bitter melon along with 200 gm of chromium every morning. He also takes a cinnamon capsule in the evening. This combination seems to be working as his glucose is around the 100 range now. Ask your Dr. about this combination to see if it is right for you.

I am a type 2 diabetic. To avoid the horrible leg cramps (knee to groin)...I drink a minimum of 8 glasses of fluid each day and take small amounts of magnesium and potassium twice each day. I take calcium each day as well.
Runners and cyclists report the same cramping problems. The formula seems to be:
Magnesium, Potassium, calcium, 8 or more glasses of water each day. I take these in low dose pill form, but the liquid drops are avalable in health food stores.

I think the symptoms vary person by person, I was just diagnosed last week with type II. I had been feeling fluish for weeks, nausea, very tired, could not get enough sleep, just a general i dont feel well feeling. Then the extreme dry mouth and an absolute craving for ice water, could not get enough water! Then it was like over night I developed blurred vision. I was becoming lethargic and almost moving in slow motion. When I finally went to the doctore, my fasting glucose was 512, my tryglicerides were 2770, a number my doctor had never seen before. Just out of curiosity why dont you test your glucose when your fiance does and take that as a base for making an appointment with your doctor!

There is a generic which is Glimepiride, which I was taking 4 mg. I was also taking Actos 30 mg. In November I "discovered" there is a combination drug called Duetact 30 - 4, which is manufactured by the same company that makes Actos. For my insurance the copay for Duetact 30 - 4 was the same as the copay for Actos 30 mg, so I am saving the copay for the Glimepiride 4 mg. Note that Duetact 30 - 4 is not currently in the iguard.org database, but I did email support@iguard.org to let them know.

I've been diabetic for well over 20 years and can tell you that the best way to gain control over high blood sugars is insulin. I have had several yeast infections over the years and still get them from time to time but with the insulin, I've not had one in several years. You're going to have to way the cost of prescription meds against the cost of getting otc meds for the infections. Also, stress can bring on yeast infections, in other parts of your body like your mouth (called Thrush).
With diet and exercise and insulin you can win the battle.

Betadine works wonders on yeast along with natural yougurt. Or you could try Lactobacilis Acidololis the natural culture in yougurt. Take 2-3 caps. with each meal. Be sure to keep them in the frig as the cultures are alive. Put Betadine on a cloth (TP etc) and wipe the area every time you pee. It will stop the itching and pain. It can be cheap at Wal Mart (generic.) Its the red stuff the docs wash infected areas with. Use it all the time to rid yourself of the bad stuff. Remember milk and fruit sugar feed the acidoplis. Regular sugars feed the yeast. This works for Athletes foot too.

Answer/Reply:
If your pancreas doesn't work nothing, over the counter, supplements, etc. will help. It may be that you can help control your blood sugar with diet alone but that is doubtful and probably not very healthy. Most people aren't willing to or just can't really eat without eating any carbs. No bread, fruit, sweets, etc. Just not practical and it also isn't really healthy. Your body, brain need some carbs to function well. Exercise also works! It is one of the best, natural remedies for lowering glucose levels. If possible the combination of diet and exercise may help but depending on how well your body functions those alone may not get you. Meds work! If pills don't insulin will, it just depends on your bodies problem not making/producing insulin or being insulin resistant. Talk to you doctor, explain your financial situation and hopefully he can work with you to find a regime that works. Good luck!
