Question/Comment:

I have a question, I am currently taking Lexapro, Welbutrin, Vyvnase, Levothroid, Chantix, Acai Berry, High Potency Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Calcium w/D, Fish Oil, Prilosec OTC. I find myself slipping further into depression with my job being on the line due to accusations of being bossy and moody, having no patience. So I am going to a Psycotherapist to try and keep my job. Would the moodiness, instant anger and frustration have anything to do with the meds I'm on? Please help I am at the end of my rope and feeling very hopeless with nobody to talk to about what I am going through.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Many of the medications on your profile could be causing some of the mood swings as well as anger, especially the Lexapro, Wellbutrin and or Chantix. Seeking the professional advice and support of a psychotherapist may be a very helpful action for you to take. You should also contact your doctor and talk with them about the side effects you are experiencing. Your doctor may want to adjust your medication to help you manage your current feelings. However, do not make any changes to your medications without first talking with your doctor. Providing your psychotherapist with a complete list of your medications will also be helpful to them when they meet with you and do an evaluation.

Answer/Reply:

Hello Trying not to be on vitamin c when on vyvnase because it cause side affects to the vyvanse. Why are you on so many medications that help the same things. I thought vyvanse was for AD/HD. Acai Berry is a weight lose pill, Isn't that cleaning out your system from all toxics, so it is clean out your system from medications tooo. You need to find a psyciatrist that is going to go trought all your medication prescribied and over the counter, one by one so you guys can figure out what can work, and what is not working. what is harming you and what you shold not stop but get off slowly. it will take a while trust me I know Imon like 15 diffrent medication and still trying and things are getting better. Try xanax for stress. but you realy need someone to monitor you medication. Please see someone that wants to help not that just wants to write a prescription..........Edna

I'm not a doctor but, i am a 45 year old female who has had the same problems, i'm on 22 different medications and still felt like i was at the end of my rope. I sincerely think that every once in awhile our bodies need a good flushing of all the toxins that are put into it, and the toxins from the environment. It worked wonders for me and I feel great!!

Answer/Reply:

It could be. I take wellbutrin myself, but the generic form, and I find myself still depressed, and my job hanging on a wire. I totally get where you're coming from with your job. You deal with the mental illness, which affects job performance, and when you are in danger of losing it, your depression becomes worse, spiraling down in an unbreaking cycle. Sometimes taking more than one antidepressant works against itself, and, painful as it may be, you may have to play around with different meds and dosages before you hit on one that's right for you. A young friend of mine was on 2 or 3 different antidepressants, and discovered that when she went off them and on to a single med different from them, did she get any better. She still suffers, but not as greatly.

Question/Comment:

I SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION AND ASIDE FROM ALL THE MED'S I'M ON, I WAS PRESCRIBED ABILIFY TO WORK WITH MY OTHER MED'S , HOWEVER I CAN'T "AFFORD" IT AT THIS TIME AND AM GOING WITHOUT.

49 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

Try contacting the drug manufacture, some of them have great programs to help you get the meds you need. Also depending on your situtation you may have a county mental health program you could apply for help.

53 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Abilify is a good adjunct med for depression, especially if other anti-depressants don't seem to be working as well as they should. How do I know this? Well, I'm a pharmacy school student.
I also suffer from major depression, as well as a whole myriad of other problems, but for some people, Abilify doesn't work as well, either because of side effects or drug interactions or medical conditions. I was one of those people it didn't help, probably because side effects exacerbating my other issues. Now, I'm on higher-than-therapeutic doses of two meds, an anti-depressant and a mood stabilizer/anti-depressant.
Could you try getting samples from your psychiatrist or therapist? Abilify's manufacturer, Otsuka, may not have set up an assistance program yet, but it's worth checking out.
You don't want to risk worsening your depression, just in case Abilify does help you. Let a professional know right away that you need help paying.....prescribers have a way of working out some kind of deal with you, as the medical field is closely networked.
Good luck!

26 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I am a drug rep and I know of a lot of programs that may help you. Definitely go to the manufacturer's website and look for a patient assistance program. Just about all pharmaceutical companies have this. Also, try going to a couple of discount websites to see if you qualify for help with any or all of your prescriptions. Examples of some websites to google are: AccesstoWellness.com, Togetherrxaccess.com, rxdrugcard.com, and internetdrugcoupons.com. Please let us all know how it turns out. If all else fails, order Abilify from Canada online. Canadian drugs are not approved by the FDA but it's probably just as safe but without the beaurocracy. I have friends that do this to cut down on cost.

36 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

We cannot endorse pursuing medication that is not FDA approved. Your best and first approach should be to contact your doctor's office and staff to see what programs they can recommend. Second, contacting the drug manufacturer directly via their 1-800 patient line may offer some cost solutions as well. If you are low income you may also be eligible for state or federal prescription assistance programs. Contacting your state's department of welfare may offer a solution as well.

Question/Comment:

IS FLUOXETINE A BAD TABLET TO BE TAKEING

29 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I took Fluoxetine is which a generic form of Prozac for a few years. At the time it helped, but after awhile it didn't seem to help much at all. I guess my body got used to it. Anyway I'm now on Lexapro which has really helped me. I don't have those black moods & bad mood swings like I had. Just my opinion. Good luck.

58 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I am a 60-year-old female who has been treated for depression for 18 years, with a variety of anti-depressants (and "booster" drugs, NONE of which boosted anything). I took Prozac for several years, until it stopped working for me. But, it was not the only anti-depressant that lost its effect. Welbutrin was another one, and Pamelor another. Although I have tried virtually everything available, Pamelor (the first), Welbutrin and Prozac were the three that actually helped ... for a few years each. Now, I've been on Effexor for about two years. It has helped about as well as Prozac first did, but I still have symptoms and am able to find little joy in anything. Because the pharmaceuticals do not do a good job for me, I've tried adding a number of different supplements over the years. One that helped more than any of them was phosphatydlserine (bovine), but that's not available since Mad Cow Disease came about. I've found the addition of fish oil (Omega 3s), B-Complex, and a good brand (this is important: those used in medical studies are of quality) of resveratrol help with my energy level, concentration, cognition, memory and mood. Surprisingly, it's the resveratrol, which I added only a few months ago, that seems to do the most. I would recommend to anyone taking an antidepressant for whom it is not working well, to try adding a supplement or two. Try for two months, to see if the addition makes a difference, as it has for me. Good luck and god bless.

Question/Comment:

My 18 year old teenage daughter is experiencing panic attacks, anxiety and depression.

Besides counseling, what else do you recommend?

50 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

It is important to discuss her symptoms with her doctor. The counselor is a good step - you may want to look for one that is experienced in working with young women. Also, there are breathing exercises and relaxation techniques that can help. The counselor may be able to recommend specific exercises and techniques. Regular exercise also can help with depression. Her doctor or counselor should be able to evaluate her and determine if medication would be helpful in treating her condition.

Question/Comment:

I have been diagnosed with Narcolepy and currently take Ritalin, 20 mg four times a day. I have been on Ritalin for over twenty years and at this point I am finding less relief. Is it possible that my body has become tolerant to the medication because I find a fall asleep more often once I take my medication. My doctor tried me on Provigil - still experienced the sleep attacks with sleep paralysis. What questions should I be asking my doctor to have him put me on the proper medical treatment?

55 year old Female

Question/Comment:

Last year I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar taking Lamictal and working great. 6 months ago my daughter was put on Straterra for ADHD. Soon after my daughter was started on Prozac and I started seeing some negitive changes esspecially mood swings. I recently went back to school and I to was diagnosed with ADHD and started on straterra. Since I have started seeing changes in my mood, mood swings and increased irritability. Now that I'm seeing it in myself my husband and I agreed that my daughter has changed since she has been on both medications. I have been reading websites and I want facts they all say something different. My question: Is this serious? Do I need to demand my doctors put us on something else? Is there an ADHD medication that works better with anti-depressents or with bi-polar meds?

30 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Taking Prozac is a blessing for many, a curse for some. It was a curse for me. I got suicidal, mean, irritable, anti-social. I immediately called my Dr and she told me to stop taking it (since I'd only been on it a week, it was safe to just stop). Within a week, I was back to my depressed, barely suicidal, normal sel, and trying a new drug. My suggestion is to not demand your Dr, tell the Dr the symptoms you notice, onset of them, and your belief that (for your daughter) it is probably the Prozac. I usually print out a copy of the side effects, and underline the ones I am experiencing so I don't miss anything. Good Luck!

45 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My son is now 15 and has been on antidrpressants of and on for 10 years. Prozac is the only drug FDA approved for children. That didn't work here, so they tried Paxil, the worse ever, angry issues big time. He is now on Trazadone and it has been wonderful. With his depression he also has anxiety. Good luck to you, I know how you are feeling.

53 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Bi-polar disorder, also called manic depression, is often subject to misdiagnosis. The manic part of Manic Depression can be pleasurable so many manic depressives are only diagnosed while in the depressive phase which can lead to a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder or ADHD due to the lack of attention. Likewise Major Depressive Disorder and ADHD are subject to misdiagnosis. This is serious because the medications for the various diseases are different and have different effects.
All physicians diagnose from what they know and psychiatric diagnosis is tricky business even for psychiatrists.
Medication for Bi-polar does not treat Major Depression or ADHD and can have complications that adversely affect those conditions. Likewise with medications for Major Depression and ADHD.
This leads the need for referral to a psychiatrist and for proper diagnosis. Routinely your general practitioner will have very little knowledge of psychiatry or the medications used for it psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately many individuals and general practitioners will make psychiatric diagnosis to the detriment of their patients.
Psychiatric diagnosis takes time and a competent psychiatrist will work with their patients to find the right diagnosis and right medication. And most patients can be helped.

Perhaps if possible you might think of getting therapy to go with your medication.
The medication alone with not change what you have had to go through.
If you are in college go to the health center, if not all counties have mental health programs.
I have lived under the conditons you are talking about, I got more help and I am so grateful for it .
Good luck to you and know that there are other people out there just like you who are willing to help

Can anybody tell me if they have had any problems taking the BUDEPRION SR-150MG 2 X'S A DAY. ( generic wellbutrin sr)?? I've tried taking this med twice & both times I was out within 30 mins. of taking it & I would sleep for 3 days, It just felt like my body was so heavy, I couldn't hardly get out of bed, when I did my mind was not thinking right, I was in a daze. So the doc put me on BUPROION-XL 150MG 2X'S A DAY.(generic wellbutrin-xL) It too made me the same way. I only took these meds the first day then i stopped taking them due to i could not sleep for three days nor move my body. I have a 9 yrs old daughter that i have to take care of. I've tried the Zoloft it did nothing, celexa made me very mean.. I just wounder if anybody has gone through the same with the generic wellbutrin as i did?? Also could it be maybe it was the generic instead of the name brand the reason why it did me that way?? ANY HELP PLEASE, THANKS IN ADVANCE . fairy_gurl419@yahoo.com

31 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have taken both the name brand and the generic, and have noticed no difference. But remember, everyone reacts differently on these types of drugs! Good Luck

45 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have used generic and name brand Wellbutrin (Bupropion) both plain, SR and XL for years and have felt no difference.
In your letter you say you were taking 150mg 2X's a day. This is the maximum dosage for that medication. It is recommended to start taking Bupropion at 25mg a day and gradually work up to an adequate dosage. Starting at 150mg 2X's a day it is no wonder you had trouble with it.
No wonder it knocked you out!
Prescribed at the right dose Bupropion is a widely used and well respected medication. It has been in use for many years. It is used in treating depression, obesity, tobacco and cocaine addiction.
Warning: Overdose of bupropion can result in seizures and death.
Were you prescribed by a psychiatrist or a GP?

61 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

Generic WellbutrinXL works for some, remember that each generic is not the same, They all use different inert ingredents, you may want to try different "brands" of the drug.
I have take this drug non generic for almost 3 years, max dose on this is 450mg.
I take mine in the morning they seem to serve react as a stimulate for me.
I have suffered depression for 25 years, some of my depression is truly chemical, other I am dealing with counseling.

Answer/Reply:

1st off, basically I have found that there ain't a lot of difference between generic and name
brands except for the cost. I have been on budeprion sr for 4 mos.i also take clonapazam for
anxiety.I have good&bad days, but I am able to better control it. I ain't a doctor, but you are being heavily overdosed you should go down to one pill a day or even a lower dosage. I am
taking 100mg a day. It doesn't cure me but it evens me out enough to deal with it.I would also
check in to finding a different doctor, cause it sounds as if yours might not know what he's
talking about.I went thru several doctors before I found a good one. I don't personally like his
manner but he is concerned about me. hope this helps.42 yr old male TECHNOMAGE44

I lost my only brother the 17th day of august 2008 & and my entire family is hurting. We did get depressed, and i guess still there, but I've tried my best to be the one to do as much of the funeral as possible. I spoke for my Bub and oh it was so hard but i did make it threw with a few tears. the thing is i didn't get depressed until about a month after we had his funeral. It finally hit me that he's gone. I'm in the air force and my wife told our commander about me, so i get a call from him telling me he's concerned and wants me to go see our military psycologist so I did. she told me that this is something time will heal, but for me to be open and try to acept the fact Bub is here hes here in our hearts. They put me on Lexapro 10mg now they uped it to 20mg, and i feel myself slipping back into the depression. I miss my only brother. Is there a medication out there that will really help my sadness and "don't really care" place...
klalfordpremed@yahoo.com

26 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

You are experiencing very normal responses to the loss of your brother. There will be other responses ahead - anger, denial... My Dad died about five years ago, and I still grieve when I think of him. I miss being able to call him for advice, what he'd do in some situation. I could have used him the past six years of intense clinical depression (it started before Dad died). I still remember him with love and respect. He was a really good man, and I say that as a preacher's son. A lot of children of ministers have real resentment issues, but I can't say anything bad about my father. Those are the kinds of things that have helped me through the process of grief. I'm sorry for the pain you're experiencing.

My condolences go out to you for the loss of your brother. I lost my brother 6 years ago in June of this year to suicide. However, the methoud of death may be different, but the greaving is the same it is a tremendous loss loosing a sibling. I was very angry with my brother at first because I felt that he was selfish in what he did, so I wrote him an anger letter, and that realeased alot of built up anger. It has been six years and some times it seems like it was just yesterday. I also read a book on suicide and the greaving process, so I had some I dea of what stage I was in in the greiving process. However, I was also on anti- depressants during the time of his death. I'm on 10mg of lexapro, and 40mg of abilify, and I've been on that dosage for more than two years, so I hope that your doctor raising your lexapro will help. Take care.

I wish it was possible to go back in time, the time before depression reared its ugly head, before I had a wreck and was injured and a few other things. But we can't. I am so depressed and nothing has seemed to help in the past 4 years. I've been in the hospital 4 times, had ECT 36 times-which has ruined my long-term memory am on medicine. I don't know what to do. Sometimes it is just hard to go on. I have trouble getting out of bed. I do what I have to for my son. One of my docs says-"fake it till you make it" so I do for church, etc. I need help. I am 47, female.

Answer/Reply:

It sounds like you need to find another doctor. One who will listen to your needs, and what you are saying and telling him or her. Tell these people who you are and what you are going thur and how YOU feel. Tell them that these ECT's are doing you more harm than good. If they haven't listened up to now.THEY NEVER WILL. Find another doctor or therapist. My son committed suicide because the so called professtionals,DID NOT LISTEN TO HIM. Find another doctor.

Answer/Reply:

My mom has battled depression all of her life because of a terrible childhood that she has ruined her to this day. You can't go back just like she can't go back. Looking back is depression and fearing the future anxiety. My only lifeline to deal with her illness is my faith in God and filling my mind with his promises, and knowing his good and he will answer our prayers. I would do anything to change her past, but most of all I wish she could focus on what the blessings that are God given, because each day of her precious life is spent there in the past in darkness. She deserves peace, and I know there is no medication will ever give her that. Only by getting to know and trust deeper in God and depending on him, will she ever have a chance to really live. I miss her and hope for her return everyday and for my father to have his wife back. I will pray for you. I don't know you but will pray for you to come through this. I don't know why I read your question and felt strongly to respond to you, God works in these ways. I try to pay more attention to my urges and act on them since I have been more curious to know and learn about the lord. I have seen your pain that you are going through, and just want you to know that there is a wonderful God that can help you. He loves you.

I went through the same symptons when I lost my son a few years ago. My therapist says that is normal and that it takes approximately 5 years to really feel better. It has been three years since my sons death and I am living basically a normal life except for holidays and his birthday. I didn't eat the first few months but I did lose about 20 lbs. I paced the floors and couldn't sit still at the beginning. It sounds like you have the same problems...I would recommend a grief counselor to help you get through the greiving process. Good luck.

Question/Comment:

I have seizures, sometimes grand mal, but mostly I space out and become unconscious. I am taking 150mg of topamax twice a day and 100mg of zonegran twice a day. At night the doctor has me on 20mg of paxil. I also have hashimotos disease (hyperthyroidism) and take .88 mcg of levoxyl.

Well, I am really sensitive to all types of medications. I usually fall asleep at the slightest drug that can make the regular person slightly drowsy. I slept through both my children's births 38 and 36 years ago. I didn't know I had epilepsy then. I didn't have my first grand mal until I was 37.

My son had absent seizures. It seems we have 10 members of the immediate family who have some form of seizures.

My question is that I am very lethargic. I cannot move all day long and am tired by 7PM. I have no will to do anything. I feel very depressed. Not suicidal, just very lazy. There has been great stress economically but I want to be my old self again. I want energy.

The only reason for the paxil was to help me sleep through the night and help with the depression. I think it is causing the depression.

What do you suggest?

My drug list suggested that it may cause serotonin syndrome. I can find no information on this sydrome even though I have searched several sites. Can ou give me some information or lead me to the information I seek on the internet?

61 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I just found the same thing with my medications. I searched and searched and came up with only one article that made any sense to me. Basically it stated that the use of opioids (narcotics such as morhpine, fentanyl, etc) as well as taking an anti depressant can cause this supposed overload of seratonin. The anti depressants are given to increase the seratonin levels in your body because apparently the majority of depression patients have low levels - so by increasing them thru these meds, it helps people deal with their depression issues. I believe they are just now discovering this new "seratonin syndrome" and are primarily guessing on the causes since there seems to be so many medications associated with getting the syndrome.

It seems to me that even if no narcotic pain reliever is taken (for those with severe chronic pain) but more than one medication to treat depression is used, this also could cause this new syndrome. Currently there's just not enough study done and because of it, doctors are now scrambling to figure it out - but like any new medical issue that arises, especially one like this that can cause death, it will take time, trials and errors before they finally figure it out.

My advice would be to print out what you can find and bring it to your doctor along with a list of all medications - including motrin, advil, asprin, etc., especially if you're being treated by more than one doc, and see what he/she has to say about it or even if they've heard of this syndrome and go from there. That's exactly what I plan on doing at my next appointment next month. Especially considering I take morphine for pain and he just increased my anti depressants from 2 a day to 3 a day. I've been alive so far and it's been years that I've been on these meds, so I believe I can last another month at least!

Good luck with finding more info on it - if you do find a good article, please email me at lauriemiller01@comcast.net

i honestly believe that many people that are taking anti-depressants of any sort, should accompany the medication with counseling. i know that for some people their chemical levels are imbalanced and that is causing the depression. i am not in any way arguing that. but for a lot of people, just coping with life is too hard, throwing them into a depression. again, not anything wrong with that. i am just trying to make the point that no matter what medication you take, it wont make problems go away. it just allows you to deal with them in a more rational way. nobody has lived a life that hasnt had it's issues. i suggest a bit of counseling to go along side of medication. i have found that thru the combination of counseling and the aid of medication, the success rate of becoming mentally healthy is much higher. especially long term. i personally have gained much from this.

You know, I would love to be able to afford the $30 co-payment each time I go, and I would have to go twice a week. Talk therapy does help, you get different perspectives that help you get out of your head for a while. Insurance company's are picky on what they cover.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Lexapro for a year now and I do believe it is working for me. I can tell the difference if I have not taken it for a while. The problem I am having is paying for my copay and when I do not have the money to pay for it I may have to go about 2 weeks with out my meds and my body tend to feel the difference. I beleive that once I go with out Lexapro for a while I tend to start getting Migrains. I am unsure if this is a side effect of the medication if you just stop taking it or not, but nothing seems to help the headaches until i start back up on the medication. Could this be a side effect of the medication or is this a definet side effect of the medication?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Although there is usually little information about what happens to patients when they stop taking a drug, it is not unusual to feel differently - particularly with drugs like antidepressants. That said, it's important to discuss these feelings and symptoms with your doctor - you may also want to talk to your doctor about other more affordable treatment options - some antidepressants come in a generic form and these are often less expensive or have a lower insurance copay.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Ask your Dr for samples for when you don't have meds. I have found that they often have them or can get them. Let them know you are having trouble with the cost.

Answer/Reply:

I just wanted to add that the drug companies do have help for most meds that are on the market they just dont advertise it. Also there are in some states have waviers that you might be able to qualify for contact your state medicade to fin out more..

I'm pretty sure that is a withdrawal symptom from the medication. I suffer with severe ones when I go past a few hours without taking my Effexor. It's horrible. Try to get some help with paying for the medication because it could set you back when you miss it.

Question/Comment:

I am on my fifth year on LEXAPRO 10mg daily and i believe that it can offer me a further lifetime of calmness and management of daily situations that my past skills and abilities failed to manage in the calm and relaxed manner i handle them today. The thing i can reflect on is that depression was not a one night appearance - the medication has enabled me to reflect upon a lifetime of low level depression that over time grew and grew - until life itself became something i did not want to be apart of. Lexapro was the fifth medication i tried over a seven month period - with an almost immediate and continued effect of calmness. I want to also indicate that the medication is not alone in providing this effect - continued development of personal management of techniques for relaxation and stress management. Side effects - i am happy to say - none.

Question/Comment:

I have post partum depression and I have been taking Lorazepam and Pexeva for about a month now. I have not seen any change. How long does it for for these drugs to work??

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

In general, it takes several weeks to reach the full effect of anti-depressants. However some patients notice a difference sooner than that and for some it may take a little longer to see results.

It's a good idea to work closely with your doctor when you are first beginning anti-depressants - especially if you aren't feeling better after several weeks of treatment.

Question/Comment:

I've been taking Celexa for a while now (40 mgs) and just recently Straterra (80 mgs). When I go to visit the nurse practicioner in August, would it be ok to also include Wellbutrin again? I had taken that in the past, (to quit smoking, and also felt better) or increase my Straterra???

Also, does anyone have information on medications that patients take or have taken with a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome???

Thank you,

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

There are drug-drug interactions between Wellbutrin, Celexa and Straterra that you'll want to discuss with your doctor so you can weigh the risks versus the benefits of using them in combination. The use of Wellbutrin is associated with an increase risk of seizures - although this risk is low, it may be further increased when Wellbutrin is taken with Celexa. Wellbutrin may increase the blood concentration of Straterra - increasing your risk of experiencing side effects from Straterra.

Question/Comment:

How long does it take for Wellbutrin to work? I am weening off another anti depressent drug in order to take this one and I have been on it three weeks and I am not feeling results.
