Question/Comment:

I've taken Simvastatin for many years, but suddenly I suffer hand cramps and leg cramps that bounce me out of bed at night. A CPK test showed high readings, and I was taken off the statin and put on lots of Vitamin D, Magnesium, Vitamin B6 and Calcium. No cramps for a whole month, and the CPK readings look better. Resumed the statin at a reduced dosage (lowered from 40 to 20mg), and 8 days later the cramps are back. My cholesterol readings, needless to say, took a jump when I went off the statins, On the plus side, I've been doing treadmill for 30 minutes daily, and it seems to have lowered my blood pressure. I'll be taking provastatin for a while to see if it will do the job without causing cramps. How about YOU with statins?

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

yep me too. especially under my rib cage front and back it was awful. Advair does the same thing so I use a lower dosage. I've stopped taking Lipitor until I see my test results in February. you were smart for stopping the statins.

My advice is to get another opinion quick. Perhaps a orthepedic doctor. Have you considered a chiropractor? They are helpful and most do deep tissue massage, and know other options that may help you.

Answer/Reply:

Try to avoid surgery at all cost. I broke a genetic fusion in lumbar section of back and still have 3 bulging disc and 1 that is desecating. I went through therapy, pain management and biofeed back for 5 years 4 hours a day 5 days a week.. Pain is tolerable on hydrocodone Darvocet and methocarbomal. I have seen several persons in therapy that have had surgery and usually end up with staph infections or multiple surgeries. See if you can find a good sports injury medical Doctor with heated swimming pool to assist with stretching exercises.

My Dad Has A disc in his lower back that gets him real bad sometimes and his chiropractor told him to make a pillow kind of like a octogon shap but wide enough to lay on front ways under his front hip bones and relax his upper body on the floor he does this for about 15 to 20 minutes and he says that it helps him quite a bit. You may whant to try taking a couple of pillows and folding them inhalf and laying on them front ways with them down under your hip bones and relaxing your body down on the floor and see if that will help. My dad has a real peace of firm foam that he put duct tape around. It is shaped like a between a square and a tryangle if you know what i mean. HAPPY THANKS GIVING TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

I agree get a 2nd op from another doc. I didn't & I regret it. I had surgery & still have pain & on meds. Do research on the docs. Not sure where you live, but you should try The Rothman Institute of Philadelphia. Those docs are great, I wish that is where I went before I had my surgery.

Question/Comment:

I have the worst case of fibromyalgis that two of my health care providers (one, an internist) have ever seen. I never wanted to take narcotics, but when you can't walk anymore, are screaming in pain all the time, and cannot handle any type of touch no matter how light, you change your mind. As one of the respondents said, used properly and under strict supervision by one's doctor, narcotics can be an effective (and, perhaps the only) method for treating symptoms. Even with the various medicines I take, all I get is enough pain to allow me to function. I am still in continuous, debilitating pain.

If I were unable to access the medicines I now take, I cannot imagine how I would be able to live. Even as it is, there are days in which I think I can't make it.

By the way, for many years before anyone knew about fibromyalgis, I had the "disease." I have had this for over 30 years, and contrary to most literature, it has continously gotten worse as time goes by.

I am 56-years old and had been quite active physically until it became impossible to do so.

Two things I can tell you about. Its likely that both will make a big difference in your life. 1) LYRICA a wonder drug and the only RX for your condition. Next a vitamin, Usana (Brand name) Health Pak 100. Go to USANA.com on the internet. It is not available in stores. It is not cheap. Approx. $105 each month, but this vitamin was created for fibromyalga (sp) I have seen it cure, thats right cure several people of this condition. You will not regret taking these vitamins. They come in packets, one for AM and one for PM and are labeled such. My friends suddenly felt up to playing with their grandchildren. They had energy and no pain. Please try it.

Answer/Reply:

Do you have a natures or a health store around where you live. Because alot of times you can take your persriptions in to them and they can look up the natural stuff that will match your perscriptions or get very close to them. Or you can go to the library and do some research on the natural erbs and vitamins for it.

I have been diagnosed with the same disease. I've had it since 1996. My flare ups were UNBELIEVABLE! But they seemed to subside in intensity than goodness. I still experience flare ups every November and Iam a migraine sufferer with all the classic symptoms. Have anyone been able to recieve SSI for this debilitating disease? The results from the governmental examination was " I could still understand and respond to questions during the examination. Therefore I was not considered disabled enough." I cannot work because of this disease. What is wrong with this agency? I really believe they want you to lie. Because when the truth is told you get penalized.

I too, have Fibromyalgia. My PCP sent me to the Pain Clinic near our house, after years of continued pain. They worked wonders!!!! I get shots right at the area where the fibers come out of the spine and it really helps me get out of bed and function at some level. The pain clinic Dr's tried to change me over to Lyrica, from the Neurontin I was put on by my PCP, but I really couldn't handle the extreme hunger on it....I am already overweight!
He put me on, believe it or not, Adderall XR!! He said that there have been recent studies into the Serotonin levels in Fibro Patients. It showed that fibro pts had very low serotonin levels and because Adderall increases serotonin levels it was presumed that it would help fibro patients in drastic ways. He has stepped out and has started prescribing Adderall to his fibro pt. with great success. I can attest to that. My husband recently lost his job which means we now have no insurance. Adderall is very expensive, like $210.00 for 30 pills, one month supply, so I have had to stop taking it. I can tell you that I call them my energy pills. When I was taking them I could get out of bed every day and do the normal thing that most people take for granted, like running down the stairs to throw in a load of laundry or cleaning the entire bathroom. Now I spend everyday in bed, getting out a few minute each day to go potty or hop on the computer for a change of scenery, but quickly back to bed.
I also take sleeping pills (Restoril) and muscle relaxers (Zanaflex) they really help the body rest enough at night to be able to do more in the day time. I still use the Vicodin ES and the Duragesic Patches for the touch pain and the other break through pain.
I know I sound like a walking pharmacy but once you get over the thought of taking them, they really help make life worth living again!! I just wish they weren't so expensive, right now I have none of the above mentioned meds.... I am waiting to hear if I qualify for state medical assistance and I am applying for Social Security Disability...we wait, and wait and wait some more and still no answers. I will continue to pursue help to get me back on my meds. I want to be a mom to my 6 kids again and if it takes walking around on 10-12 different pills, then, so be it!!! At least, I can play with my kids and clean my own house!!!
Good luck to all of you suffering with this misunderstood debilitating illness!!!

If you can't afford your meds, many pharmaceutical companies offer discounts if you contact them directly. Find out who the manufacturer is (ask the pharmacist) and look them up on the internet for an e-mail or phone number.

I like you have had fibromyalgae for twenty plus years. I have had every narcotic under the sun and they only masked the pain, plus, I got addicted to some of them, which cause me to enter a drug rehab program. Finally last year my neurologist, internist, primary care doctor and rheumatologist tried me on a series of three drugs, trazodone, lyrica, and cymbalta. It is working great for me and now I am able to work, part time, and have a better feel for life. I know I'll never be cured of this treadfull disease but I can live a much better quality of life. I am also diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylose spondlitis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, degenertative disc disease, osteopenia, polyarthritic, chronic bronchitis, high cholesterol and have had a TIA-mini stroke. cystic fibroid disease, and last but not least PTSD.
I have had both hips replaced, both carpal tunnels cut, fusion of C-5 & C-4 fused, fusion of R-thumb, and Rotato cup surgery, the list continues but I keep pushing on. I am now 59 years young and I attend physical therapy three times a week for two hours per day. I know each person has their own pain tolerance but now I value being able to get up spend time out doors instead of the old seven days a week lying in bed staring at the ceiling or looking at the walls and wishing I was dead.
I can only say and pray that eventually you find some peace that is pain free and quality viable for your life. God Bless. Nelsena

Look up RSDS.org, or RSD, or Reflex Sympathetic Dystorphy that is the old name

the new name is Cronic Regional Pain Syndrom (1, 2, or 3)

I was treated for 8 1/2 years by a doctor who ran the pain clinic specializing in this disorder and he told me to educate myself on it.. Fight like hell and Learn everything you can.. also look for support groups.

I did and after 10 years of fighting a new doctor thanks to the Workers Comp changes I am taking different drugs and doing much better.

contact me we can chat..
if you are interested

Question/Comment:

I also have FM and am on Lyrica and have been taking Soma for years which greatly helps the spasms. Neither Flexeril, Baclofen or Skelaxin seemed to help much at all.

50 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

My PCP will not prescribe soma for me and I've mentioned to him repeatedly that Baclofen isn't helpful. I've never taken Lyrica, Skelaxin. Are they helpful?

45 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

Lyrica is comletely different than some. Soma works great with a pain killer for pain and extreme spasms. I don't know what PCP is but I have RSD which is a neurological disease and I had multiple problems with Lyrica. In NY state they are trying to make Soma's illegal. But they do work well but you talk really slowly without knowing it for the first twenty minutes.

Question/Comment:

I think that LYRICA has worked great for me. And when I'm having a Fibro flare up I also take FLEXERIL beofre bedtime. I only take ALEVE for pain since I refuse to take other addicting pain killers.

I am so glad that someone brought up the fact about addition to meds. I too have Fibromyalgia. I was diagnosed in 1998 (2 years after my kids were born - I have triplets). In 2005 it was discovered that I had 2 herniated discs in my cervical spine. The pain was so bad that I opted for surgery hoping that my pain would be relieved as the orthopedic surgeon said it would. Guess what? It made it worse. I am divorced and there is no way that I can't work because my ex doesn't pay timely child support (he owes over $29,000 right now). I was taking 2 Vicodin every 3-1/2 hours along with Flexeril. At first it made me a bit woozie but I got used to it and it was used just to make it manageable to work. I don't suggest surgery unless it can't be helped. Today I deal with the Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome (CMPS). I've been seeing a massage therapist for 2X/month for the past 3 years. I've recently tried PT again but to no avail. The only thing that really takes my pain away is if I lay down. I don't plan on going into that business. I take Paxil (depression), Tramadol (for pain), Norflex (nightly muscle relaxer) & Mobic. I never was addicted even though people got worried about me. Please do whatever you have to so you can have a somewhat normal life. I'm still waiting for that day.
