Global Patient Feedback for Heartburn / GERD ( Post a comment )
Question/Comment:
The reason I am taking Ranitidine is because I also am using 200 mg of celebrex daily. Celebrex was hard on my stomach and I was having a little pain. My doctor suggested that I take the Ranitidine, 150mg twice daily; but for over a year I have only been taking the one. I do have a little heartburn daily. With Celebrex, I know there is a risk for heart attack, but the pain is too severe not to take it. I tried many many over the counter and other perscriptions, only celebrex allows me to function almost normaly. What can I do? I love my celebrex. I am now also adding grapejuice and cherryjuice along with dried cherrys. Canned cherries are just too sweet for me. Are they helping me? I just began this week, if I see any change I certainly will share it with you.

Question/Comment:
I was diagnosed with gastritis, after an endoscopy Nov. 10th here I am Dec. 18th still battling with severe reflux. I have to sleep sitting up in a recliner. My doctor put me on Zegerid which is 40 mg of prilosec coupled with sodium bicarb which is "baking soda". He had me on it twice a day then down to once a day. He also has me on 300 mg of Zantac that I am to take all 300 mg at bedtime. I'm also on Reglan 3-4 times a day and now he's added Carafate. My thoat is feeling like I drank acid and in the evenings I get a tight throat which I am guessing is inflammation or spasms. But I am wondering if it a side effect of the Zegerid/prilosec. I was surprised about the statements about baking soda, because I have had those tight feelings in my chest and throat and was wondering if any of you have had this trouble? I am appauled by all those "pay me and I'll tell you" ads online that tell you they know how to cure your reflux.

Question/Comment:
I take Nexium at 6 AM but I must also take Levothroxine in the AM too so my MD said to take the Levothroxine at 3 or 4 AM and then take the nexium when I get up at 6 and not go back to bed. I check with my pharmacist and my doctor, Two heads are better than one.

Question/Comment:
Drink baking soda and water. Works wonders for heartburn and less expensive than prescription drugs. Also, Pepto Bismal works well for me also.

Answer/Reply:
My doctor told me NOT TO USE BAKING SODA for heart burn/GERDS. IT changes the electrolytes or something and can trigger heart attack. I had read that using baking soda was bad for a person but blew it off as that was all we ever used, but when the doctor explained WHY it was bad for me I stopped using it. My ex-husband says his doctor told him to take a teaspoon of vinegar. He tried it and claims it's works great.

Pepto Bismal has salicilic acid or asprin in it, I'm afraid to take that for acid relux. I'm surprised it works for you.

Question/Comment:
Can your windpipe act like, it is slipping from side to side, from having heartburn/gurd?

Answer/Reply:
Yes, it can. Mine did and I wound up in the hospital with a bleeding stomach ulcer plus my entire esophagus had tiny little pits in it. That can be a major warning sign that you need to see a gastroenterology doctor and have him do an exam where he actually looks at your esophagus and stomach.

Question/Comment:
Is Heartburn/gerd the same as Acid reflex?

Answer/Reply:
YES. From what my doctor told me, GERD is caused from acid reflux. It is usualy described as GERD/acid reflux. Acid reflux is when the stomache produces too much acid which can cause heartburn. GERD is when that acid comes back up through the esophagus. GERD poses a threat of damage to the lining of the esophagus if not treated. I am not a doctor, but this subject was explained to me by my own doctor and my sons' pediatrition because myself and all 3 of my boys have been diagnosed with GERD/acid reflux. Hope this helps.

I have NERD-non erosive reflux disease. I was diagnosed 3 years ago, but not before i thought i was having panic attacks, never thought is was heartburn but apparently that's what i was experiencing. All those trips to the emergency room and was told it was a panic attack. I have very painful heartburn in my gut, back, and neck. Makes me sick and unable to move. I might be having it right now, it's in the early stages. I take Prilosec once a day but considering taking it twice-once in the morning and then at night. Taking Pepto Bismol gives me black stools the next day, very strange.
I did take Nexium but my insurance does not cover it anymore.

Answer/Reply:
Yes, and you can help relieve it some, by raising the head of your bed about 8 inch's. this helps at night keep the acid's, down in the stomach and out of the esophogus.

Answer/Reply:
Yes it is the same, I just wanted to say that one of the best things that has helped me is to wait at least 2 hours to lay down after eating-this is even a small snack, because it lays in your stomach as it diguests and the acid comes up in your throat causing posible damage. I have woken up choking from the un-digested food if I don't wait to lay down. I hope this helps some.

Answer/Reply:
Thats right. I did not know about not eating 2 hours before bedtime. I awoke soon after with acid and small pieces of food coming up in my throat. I ate just before I fell asleep. The feeling is awful and I kept coughing like I had food stuck in my throat. I had to keep taking small sips of water, after about an hour or so I started to feel better. Now I am careful about eating anything for at least two hours before bedtime. I am on Protonix 40mg once a day. I am thinking about whining off of the Protonix and taking Aloe Vera Juice instead. I heard this stuff works wonders on the whole body. Anyone out there taking this? Any feed back would be deeply helpful.
Thanks,
