I have severe allergies and sensititivities to a lot of antibiotics as well as other medication. I would like to know what I can do to rid this problem from my body. It causes a major problem when trying to be treated by any physician.

Answer/Reply:
The first thing I would recommend is getting to a good doctor who specializes in the treatment of allergies so you can have a good assessment. I see a Pulmonologist. You will likely get skin prick testing (not painful) and perhaps some blood work to assess your antibody levels, particularly you IgE level. This will help to determine more specifically what you are allergic to, how your immune system is doing, and how severe things are. You will probably also wind up doing a spirometry (lung function) test to check lung functioning and assess for asthma. Other tests such a lung x-ray may be called for. Once you have a better picture of what's going on, you can be given specific options for treatment. I would not recommend you try doing this on your own.

I would try hot epsom salt, and even acupuncture. for your legs and lower back. It really works. I have fibromyalgia and bulging disks in my lower back and this helps me allot. My legs used to do that.

If the burning is like your legs have gone to sleep, get checked for Raynaud's Disease (if you smoke) or Raynaud's Syndrome (if never a smoker). I have Raynaud's Syndrome and take a vasodialator medication to open up the vessels in the extremites. My symptoms were burning and cold extremities. Good Luck.

I am 40yrs young and I was also diagnosed with angioedema. I experience edema mostly in lip that varies from top and bottom or both, sometimes in cheek and tounge and most of the time I have a lump in my throat. Before I was first diagnosed with angioedema I was having hives and the doctors where saying I was having an allergic reaction to something or due to stress. I do not have hives any more but symptoms have progressed. I take Zyrtec 10mg twice daily, Zantac 150 maximum strength twice daily, Prednisone 20mg three times daily. This has help the swelling some, however on this regimen I should not be having any. The doctors I've seen thus far say they do not know what causes angioedema and that it is not an allergic reation and stress can not cause swelling in the lip, cheek, etc. I am scheduled to see a specialist in Angioedema with Johns Hopkins, but can't see him until February.

Doctors often prescribe antihistamines such as loratadine (Claritin) or cetirizine (Zyrtec) to help with cat allergies. There are also nasal corticosteroids like fluticasone (Flonase) or mometasone (Asamanex) that help to reduce allergy symptoms.

Unfortunately an allergy to aspirin also means you might be allergic to other common pain medications like Motrin or Advil (Ibuprofen) and Aleve (Naproxen). It's a good idea to talk to your doctor about your aspirin allergy and how it will affect which pain medications you can take.

Answer/Reply:
Aspirin and Ibuprofen both affect my asthma (breathing), so my doctor prescribes me Fioricet with codeine for my headaches as Tylenol does not work that well for me. It's a narcotic, but seems mild, and works very well for my headaches. Talk to you doctor to find out if anything can be prescribed.

Answer/Reply:
Although many drugs contain sulfa - the sulfa-containing compound that commonly causes allergic reactions in people is found in drugs such as Bactrim (a common antibiotic), in thiazides (a common class of diuretics often used for high blood pressure), and in sulfonylureas (a medication used for diabetes).
In most cases, there are alternatives to these medications and other sulfa containing medications- always inform your health care providers (doctor, nurse, pharmacist, etc.) about your allergies to medications so they can take this into consideration when providing care.
The best way to learn about specific drugs you are taking is to look them up in the iGuard system and see what other people are saying and post additional questions specific for those drugs.
