Question/Comment:
After taking neotrexate and HCQS for Reumatoid Arthris for some time, I started to have on and off eye infection. Eye Dr. said it was due to the side effects of the RA medicines. I stopped the medicines and my joint pain left me later. But recently, eye Dr said my eye infection is a flare up of RA. I'm totally lost and confused. 30 yrs old woman

Answer/Reply:
The biggest problem with RA is it is your immune system attacking your body. I have the problem of sinus infections more frequently, keep up with your dr. and ask questions.

I too have RA, and I'm in a flareup of 2+ YEARS that we can't get under control. I also have major stomach issues, and found out recently that I have three ulcers from my medications.
My Dr. has me taking prescription Protonix to heal the ulcers and to possibly avoid anymore from happening. It has helped me IMMENSELY!!!!! Also, with my pain meds, RA meds, etc. I am on Promethazine (phenegran) for nausea and to enable me to take the Opiod pain meds without vomiting all the time. It would be worthwhile to find a good Gastro Dr. explain your history and go from there. It's very possible you DO have ulcers, but won't know until you have a thorough exam and possibly some testing. A good gastro will put you on a Protonix or something along those lines to help heal them (it) and prevent future. I've made tremendous progress with my Gastro Drs meds and my Rheumys meds, and my Pain mgmt drs meds as long as they all know what I'm taking/why/ and communicate! Good luck hun!

I guess I left out that I was on Prontix and have been for about 4 years. Well i did have some test done and the one they run the tube down your throat, well they found nothing so that was kinda a bummer. well after months of going through this stomach thing with every thing take my stomach would hurt, then I went through being constipated all the time and my stomach would bloat. Well i found out that the protonix increased the methotrexate levels in my body. so I stopped the prontix stomach problem gone, now I just get heart burn more often but I can lilve with that.... 45 year old female

Hello, They now have a iv drip you get once month that helps with the RA and you might ask about the iv medication as it goes threw the blood steam not your stomach so it wouldn't hurt your stomach. Good Luck with it I know the misery yet we just keep going. Pooh

Hello, I know the feeling of being lost. I have eye problems but wasn't told ever that it was from the RA. I got my eye problem called Uveitus from a tick bite. That tic bite gave me Lyme disease, the lyme disease triggered off so many illnesses in my body it isn't funny. I was never sick, never took one pill untill 2004 when I came down with the Uveitus. Now I am using a walker or my Jazzy chair on real bad days, I had one eye doctor that said I had pink eye in the beginning, treated me for a month for pink eye, Then I went back as itwas just beyond pain I could stand. He dialated my eyes and thats when he found out I had Uveitus. Maybe you have Uveitus, it dose have to do with RA but can be treated easly as last week I went back to eye doc,oh I change because he misdiagnosed me) my new dr is fantastic and my Uveitus is now in remission after 5 years. So go to another eye doc ,get a second opionion it's allways best to have two opinions. Good Luck Pooh

Question/Comment:
I have had burning pains in all my joints, plus knobs have appeared on a few fingers where the joints are, and my left hand and fingers go dead. I had tests and do not have Carpal Tunnel Disease. Further tests and scans, xrays etc, I was diagnosed two and half weeks ago with Osteo Arthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The Rheumotologist prescribed once a day taken together, Celebrex and Plaquenil. I am a heart patient and often feel flutters in my chest, I become nauseous and feel like falling over. Is this the right combination to treat both these painful diseases? I heard about Humira. I will read up after this posting about it. The Doctor told me not to take Brufin or painkillers, but added this cocktail he prescribed will only start showing signs of relieft after six weeks. I cant wait that long, the pain is terrible, plus its affecting my mobility and quality of life. Can you kindly advise me how to cope and which is the best form of medication for this bearing in mind I am a heart patient, although its not giving me problems.

I am a 40 yr old female, I also have Osteo Arthritis and RA,. Be carefull on Celebrex and Plaquenil. I developed serious side effects from both of these medications. Talk to your Rheumatologist and see if methotrexate is a better choice for you. There are also better pain medications out there without all the side effects Celebrex is known for. I developed ulcerated colitis from this pain medication. Always be frank with your dr. and let them know of any side effects you develope when you start a new med. I am still working with my dr. to find something that will work. Make sure you also check up on any meds. they suggest and decide for yourself if it is worth it.

I have been diagnosed with severe ra along with diabetic neuropathy.I lost the ability to walk overnight. The doctors cant explain why it happened the way it has. I was in the hospital for
eight days and have been in a wheel chair since. I was inflamed throughout my entire body.
So now I am on Methortexate 2.5mg four tabs once weekly, prednisone 30mg once daily, folic acid and vicodin for pain.In all it helps somewhat but I still have a lot of problems and cannot stand but for more than a minute. It is as if my muscles in my legs aren't there and my ankles and knees hurt so bad .If what the doctor is trying doesn't work he is going to try some kind of

Hopefully he will give you one of the biologic drugs; Humira, Enbrel, Kineret... I started off using Kineret, then went to Enbrel and now have recently started on the Humira. Until I started on the shots I could not even get out of bed. I take 6 - 2.5 Methotrexates a week , 2 - 5 mg's of prednisone daily, 2 - 500 mg naproxem daily along with folic acid and an anti depressant. I think you should ask your doctor for the shots.

Answer/Reply:
First I am sorry to hear about your situation. I have had RA for 33 years now. Only recently they have started me on a BRM (biologic response modifiers) after about 5 weeks now I am starting to see some relief from the pain and swelling. I would suggest you talk to your rheumologist about the muscle pain also, since RA can also effect the connective tissue from your muscles to the joints (tendon's and ligaments).
There are a lot of support websites out there that a lot of us with RA belong too, we share experiences and help support each other even if it is just to have someone that understands these diseases and lives with them daily.
Good luck to a speedy recovery.

I am a 40 yr old female and have been diagnosed with RA and Osteo-Arthritis for the past 7 yrs. I am taking 8 - 2.5 mg Methotrexate/wk, 3 - 30 mg Prednisone/dy, 1 - 1 mg Folic Acid/dy, 1 - 40 mg Nexium/dy. I am not able to take most pain medicine since they do not work or cause to much side effects. My dr. and I are now in the process of trying Humira since I started on Enbrel and had developed a sinus infection that would not go away. I wish you luck and please as I always tell people. Talk to your dr. frankly, let them know of any problems/side effects and keep up with research on any new medications. Take time and ask questions.

Question/Comment:
I take Orencia monthly, after trying Remicade. I also take methotrexate, folic acid, prednisone 10mg daily, Vicodin. Still continue to have pain and swelling...Pure exhaustion daily. So now my dr. has diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia as well as RA/OA. He is going to start me on medication for FM as well. Hopefully this will help, and maybe I can get off of some of these other meds. Do you think that is a good possibilty?
