Question/Comment:

My mother passed away not long ago when she was 84. She had Parkinson disease for about 10 years and high blood pressure on the top of that. Her doctor told us that her Parkinson medication has caused her blood pressure to go down so they tried to adjust her BP medication, but her BP always jumped up and down. When she laid down her BP will be up, when she in the sitting position, her BP will be lower and when she completely standup, her BP will drop that causing her to get dizzy all the time. I just wanted to share her symptom with everyone who had BP because some other drugs that you 've been taking might have cause the BP to be fluctuated. My mother died of a heart attack and I believe that because her BP was fluctuated, her heart could handle pumping up and down anymore. So, be careful in taking any BP with other long-term medications in my mom case was the Parkinson medication. You should check your BP everyday and report any suspecious condition to your doctor. Take care.

Thank you becaregiver for your input IN RE: High Blood Pressure.

I have several medical problems and never had any trouble with my blood pressure. It was always a little low. Then, when I had my Heart Attack my heart doctor put me on the Blood Pressure medicine along with the Nitro and my other meds. Then four (4) years later I had a Stroke in November 2004 and did not know it and did not find out I had a Stroke until January 2004. In looking back over the months, as vascular surgeon needed to know as close as possible when it happened, I remembered one Wednesday night after Church my left arm had gone numb and I was playing with it. Pinching it, raising it up and watching it flop down, etc etc. When the numbness occured it did not shock me due to the fact that I have a lot of neck and back problems. I had a full spinal fusion when I was 13, then as i got older the discs in my neck started to rupture and I have had to have two (2) discs fused with bone chips from my hips. No one told me there was a bone bank and I think I have more troubles with my hips with walking and arthur than anything else. Last year in February I had to have 3 discs removed from my neck, kadaver bones and two (2) titanium plates with 6 screws each placed in my neck to hold my head on my shoulders so that caused me to lose my job of 17 years and without insurance - I filed for disability was approved however, you have to be approved for two (2) years before you can get Medicare so I have to go to a Clinic. I can not get it through the Doctors head that my blood pressure is not as high as it reads when I come into her office. During the day it runs lower than the normal. My Blood Pressures was 287/94 my last visit so she put me on another blood pressure medicine Accupril. I am now on Toprol XL and now thie Accupril but I do not take the Accupril due to BP being ok on the Toprol XL in fact it makes my BP go really low and I am tired ALL THE TIME. She is a Foreigner (not that that makes any difference) but hard to communicate to her that with pain your BP elevates and that was the problem that day.

Thank you for your concern, I did not mean to make this into a Novel and I do appreciate the time you took to be so concerned. Yes, I do need to watch it much closer than I do. I only check it when I have a DR appt and when I feel really really tired. I need to take it more often.

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. May God Bless You.

I am one of the 3% of americans where the doctors don't know why my blood pressure is so high. They have all tried different combination of drugs. It works fine for a short period of time but then goes back up to over 200 and over 120 for the lower number. Is there a study going on with people like me and can I perticipate in it. I feel it is a hopeless cause but I am too youn for a stroke or heart attack because no one seems to know what to do. All tests have come back fine. Oh, and I am 49 yrs old used to weight 205lbs. 5' 3" tall. I am a black/puerto rican

Answer/Reply:

I recently met with a cardiologist to try to figure out why my blood pressure continues to skyrocket even with beta blockers. He told me only 5% of patients with HBP have a known cause. The other 95% are being treated without a known cause. He is having me get tests to rule out kidney problems, thyroid and/or low levels of potassium. I had a perfect EKG and blood oxygen is normal. All other blood work is normal. He told me not to drink alcohol. I like to drink about a bottle of red wine daily. I take my blood pressure in the AM and PM. If I don't drink at night it is very high. When I do drink it drops incredibly low and stays that way into the morning. I don't know of any research projects going on but I too would like to participate.

Like you, I have been bothered with episodes of very high blood pressure..mine usually happened during the night...I was taking 2 kinds of b/p meds twice daily and another kind just once daily....I've been troubled by this since about 1988 and it took years for the doctor to get just the right combination of medicines to help....a long time ago, the doctor thought I might have Cushing's Syndrome, but after a bunch of tests, it was determined that I didn't....

In the last few years, I have been taking a product called Juice Plus+. When I started taking the Vineyard Blend, which is composed of all the fruit of the vine, I was able to stop taking one of my b/p meds twice a day. And now, at every visit with the doctor, my blood pressure has been stable...Another thing I was doing that caused my b/p to spike in the night was taking Tylenol PM x2..one of my doctors told me that this product is made with Benadryl which will make your blood pressure go up....this is why it only happened at night, because I took these at night to help with the assorted aches and pains I get from fibromyalgia....also, to help me sleep....I also take the Orchard Blend and Veggie Blend that is supposed to give you the benefit of all the fruits and veggies a body is supposed to get in a day's time....

I am 64 years old and like you I had uncontrollable HBP for years and before open heart surgery for mitral valve regurgitation I was on 7 medicines for HBP: monoxidil, lisinipril, sular, clonidine, lasix, inspra, metoprolol and supplements. When admitted to hospital for HBP in 08/07 and after echcardiogram and xrays it was discovered I had the mitral valve regurgitation and mild congestive heart failure. Fortunately the heart surgeons were able to repair it and I didn't end up having to have a mechanical valve. I was also very fortunate that I didn't need bypass surgery for clogged arteries. Following surgery my BP still did not stabilize and after passing out 2 times in one week (I had never before fainted in my entire 64 years, I dicided to change cardiologist because he had started me off on too high dosage. Once I changed doctors I am happy to report that I now only take Cozaar, Clonidine and lasix for my BP plus magnesium oxide (800 mgs. 2 times a day. My BP is normal and very rarely is ever high; You might want to see a cardiologist for a complete workup (stress test, echocardiogram, chest xray. Also limit yout sodium to no more than 2000 mg. per day and watch your diet very carefully. I hope this helps.

Answer/Reply:

I also had uncontrollable High Blood Pressure. It's funny, but all my troubles seemed to start when I started statin drugs for my cholesterol. After 10 years of suffering, I was talking to a chiropractor one day and he said statin drugs should be called Satin's drugs. So I stopped taking the statin drugs and my stomach problems got better. The uncontrollable high blood pressure got better. I still have high blood pressure and I am on two different kind of medications. But the terrible symptoms I had like nausea, back pain, fast heart beat when my pressure went up dissappeared. I am now on niacin and zetia. Like everyone else my blood test always came out good or within range. I am suspecting that the cholesterol medications mess up my potassium. That's why drinking fruit and vegetable drinks are good. Also try drinks that are lo sodium that put back your electrolytes. Some people think they get fibromyalgia because of certain medications. Diet is probably the best way to go but it is not easy. We all pay a price when we take medications since we don't know if our aches and pains are caused by the medications.

Answer/Reply:

I suffered with high blood pressure for at least 25 years. Usually around 180/110. I heard all the stories that a certain percentage will AWAYS have the same problem. I went through cat scans-pet scans - mris - I tried literally them all - Lisinopril - Toprol - Norvasc - Micardis - deltiazem, hct and so forth. Pressure would always stay in the very high range. Last year my excellent cardiologist suggested that I give TEKTURNA. I expected the same run around.
WOW - After one week my readings were 125/75. I couldn't believe it and expected that in a matter of days, I would once again be back in the high range. Well it is now 15 months and I have remained in the 115/125 over 75/85 level. I take 150mg every (without fail) morning. Doctor thought I would probably go up to 300mg a day. That has not been the case.

78 year old Male

Answer/Reply:

I was afflicted for over 25 years with high blood pressure. I also was told that a small percentage of the population will ALWAYS have hypertension. I had all the scans - ct - pet - mris - Nothing changed. I took all the well known medicines but readings stayed in the 190/110 range.
Nothing seemed to help Lisinopril-Captopril-Toprol-Norvasc-Micardis HCT. No change. More than a year ago my excellent cardiologist suggested I try Tekturna. I truly expected the usual run around. Well, after four days with Tekturna I was at 125/75. I take one 150mg dose every morning
and now after 15 months I remain in the 115/125 over 70/85 range. Hard to believe but very TRUE.
Dr. suggested I might have to go to 300mg - but not as yet.

Answer/Reply:

Why in the world would your doctor want to you double up on the HBP medication with a reading of 125/75??

I am so disgusted at the amount of drugs/prescriptions these doctors insist in giving the rest of us who believe that we really need them. Yes, I do think that some people do need something to control their blood pressure, but the reading of 125/75 is pretty darn good.

It makes me wonder what percentage the good docs are getting back.

Sorry, but I am truly fed up with all of the medications that are forced on people who could get better by means other than prescription drugs.

Answer/Reply:

I agree with you. Too many doctors are just too quick with the Rx pad. I have high blood pressure and have been on medication for about 13-14 years. I had a difficult time in the beginning finding one that worked without side effects. I took it for years, then it was necessary to change. It was keeping me awake at night. The new medication the doctor put me on was Metoprolol 50MG 2 pills per day. About two weeks after I started taking this, I woke up during the night and my mouth was hot like I had been eating jalapeno peppers. The medication was more than I needed. Since then, I have been taking only 1/2 of one pill per day and my BP is staying down....unless I eat a lot of salty foods, then I need to take another 1/2 pill. My BP is directly in proportion to my salt intake. I dropped about 10 pounds and I am getting a little more exercise than I used to. I feel like most people could lower their BP(maybe not to normal) if they would just try....eat better, exercise a little more, and watch out for the salt and stress. I don't like that I have to take medication, but I know it is necessary. I am trying to make changes that will at least reduce the amount of chemicals I need to put into my body.

This is a comment for the 50 yr. old female. One bottle of wine daily is way to much! You are an alcoholic and you are compromising your health. Does your doctor know how much you drink? I bet not.

My doctors told me only about 10% of the people with high blood pressure actually have a reason. I've had all the tests done as well and all came back negative.I am on four blood pressure and one heart medication. all at maximum dosage. I also have chronicpain and stress which may be the reason for the elevated pressure but not definite. Wish there was a reason and could fix it.

To 49 yr. old female:
I would contact Dr. West who I believe you can find online with a search or under Natural Process supplements. He has a protocol for high bp with very natural supplements. Some chiropractors sell these products but he will tell you what to take and how much of it. You can receive his Health Alerts each month also by subscribing for about $39/yr. He also then will allow you to write him and he will ans. your questions. Natural Process has been in business for over 80 yrs. and the lady who taught me about health and natural supplements lived across the street from their farm. Hope this helps. Natural is always best as usually no side effects.

I am also a 62 year female - who has been on different kinds of blood pressure meds, also diabetic. I am getting afraid now because this labetol this heart doctor prescribed can mess
up your kidneys. I am afraid of the side effects that all these meds are having on my body.
The last time the doctor talked to me, he said my kidneys weren't in good shape. So tomorrow when I go to my regular doctor, I am going to tell him he's going to have to give me something else as even now my sides are beginning to hurt a little. It seems like a nite my BP goes up and in the morning its high. Please tell me where I can find this Dr. West, as I can't find him on the internet.

I am male 57 overweight and diabetic and also had uncontrolled high blood pressure for 20 years. My specialist told me I would never be under 145/95 again even with meds. Now with Monopril 20, Diltiazem 360, Lasix 120, Micardis 80 Plus (best of all) and some herbal items Acetyl-L-Carnitine (3 times per day), COQ10 (150), B Complex, Glycemic Multi Vitamin, Milk Thistle 7gm (Liver Cleaner-every day) and Ultra Pynco 15000 I have stayed at a normal 125/80 for 12 months. Takes trial and error but medicines alone will not work. Herb supplements are just as necessary and Micardis Plus was the sealer as regards medicines. Hope it helps.

Your weight may be the key to lowering your blood pressure, I can not believe that your doctors have not told you this, also walking can help with both the blood pressure and weight. I know because I have been there. Also your ethnic background is also know to have high blood pressure more than other ethnic backgrounds. Hope you get everything under control. 56 yr. old female

My blood pressure was high all the time. My medications were changed several times. When i had a hysterectomy 4 years ago my blood pressure went out of control. After further testing, the doctors found that I had Pheochromocytoma. A tumor in the adrenal gland. that was removed and I was fine for a while. This might be worth checking out.

I was in the same category, battling uncontrolled high blood pressure for years. Finally my doctor put me in a study program through the UAB hospital in Birmingham, AL and it was discovered that my high bp related to an elevated aldosterone level. It was brought under control by spironolcatone, along with benicar and chlorthalidone. Now my blood pressure stays the best it has been in years- around 120/75. It had been as high as 215/115.

Have you been tested for primary aldosteronism? They should check you aldosterone and your renin. Most of us with PA also have low potassium. The meds used for this condition are either spironolactone or epleronone (Inspra). Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you.

After being diagnosed with sleep apnea and sleeping with a CPAP mask each night, my BP has stabilized. I was stopping breathing multiple times through the night and not getting enough oxygen so my BP would go up. I would also suggest that you work with someone in clinical hypnosis and you may be surprised at how this can help. It is something you learn to do yourself. You might go to the website of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis for a practitioner in your area. These are people who are well-trained in clinical hypnosis and many work in other areas of health as well--such as pain management, stress management, etc. Good luck

I am a 40 years old and my husband who is 49 has fought high blood pressure for years, this last year we stumbled onto something that actually helped. We have been using cold pressed milled flaxseed. We have both been using it on cereal, yogurt, spinkling it on soup, etc.( Do not cook with the flax in your food, add it after you have cooked, as cooking the flax actually destroys the omegas that it contains) Also using the flax oil in soft gells, and taking it three times a day with meals, works almost as well. Another thing that we have found that helps is cinnamon. Several of our friends have also tried this with the same results. The added benefits that we have had is higher fiber intake, lower cholesterol, triglicerides, and weight loss as well as lower blood pressure

I am sorry to hear that your b/p is so very high and nothing is working for you. I am 44 years old, and I have been on three different high b/p meds for a over a year now. The doc says he does not know why my blood pressure is so high either. However, I am lucky, because they have brought my b/p down. Now, my 27 year old daughter is having high b/p and she is on one pill a day.And of course, the doc has no idea why she is having high b/p either. 42/w/f .. I was in a similar situation where my blood pressure (after years of being "textbook") started climbing. My physician wasn't worried about it as I "appeared" very healthy. Even when I was extremely overvweight (BMI 44) and had a gastric bypass (which is supposed to help keep your bp down), mine kept climbing. They attributed it mostly to inactivity from injuries (sports & motor vehicle). By the time I finally had to quit working, as I needed major lower back surgery, my bp was still "within reason" and probably "attributed to extreme pain". Then we had to sell our house .. we bought an RV and moved pretty much every 2 weeks, ... this is when my bp really got out of control. Even after trying several bp meds & combinations of w/ increases constantly, it wasn't until after we settled back down into an apt. that my bp came down. Now, the last 4 monthly visits to my dr. we have lowered my meds & I am amazed. Something to think about. If my bp gets much lower, I won't need my meds for bp anymore. Thing I noticed that helped: staying in 1 place, eating a much healthier diet (meaning NOT from box), good spices, lots of garlic, very low fat (read you nutrition lables)!!. My other health issues (injuries, fibro, arthritis, bad discs in neck/low back, pain) haven't changed, so I'm puzzled why these few changes worked. And yes, I do drink alcohol some - and I cook with red wine, extra dry vermouth,.. it actually helps take the fat out of your food and I use xtra virgin olive oil as much as possible. I go back to dr in 2 wks & we'll see what he wants to do w/my meds this month. Hope you find something that works for you.

The lightheadedness and dizziness I experienced was due to an inner ear problem . Balance was also affected . It had nothing to do with my high blood pressure. A hearing test was required and that was followed by physical therapy at the Center for Balance . The crystals in my inner ear had become misplaced. Talk to your Doctor again about the dizziness and balance problem.

Thank you for the information. I already know I have a balance problem. I use to do aerobics and when we would have to balance by standing on one leg only I would have problems. I have other medical issues right now and haven't taken any tests to see if I have inner ear problems. The costs have been so bad with just what I have had done with other things. I only have hospitalization insurance because I had a prexisting problem with my back and can't get just regular health insurance so have to do what I can and what I can afford but will at some point see if I have inner ear problems. Again thanks for the information.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Are you sure it is Lisinopril you are taking? Lisinopril is a HIGH blood pressure medication and if you have low bp, then I wonder why you would be put on this particular medication? If you have low bp, then it would make sense that the Lisinopril would make you light headed. This particular drug comes in strengths of 2.5mgs.--40mgs, so you are taking the lowest possible dose. Another thing, did you discuss the discontinuation of the drug with your physician? You need to inform your MD about the drug's effects on you and let him or her decide how best to discontinue it. Most drugs should not be stopped abruptly. Perhaps you had some high bp when your MD put you on this medication? And if so, stopping it abruptly may have been the cause of your light headedness. In any case, please call your MD to let him know what is going on with you.

Answer/Reply:

I am a 71 year old dwoman who was on lisinopril for 6 months, I had sever sinus attacks when i took it. I had such drainage I thought I would drown. I stopped it and within 10 days the problem resolved. I do not recomend anyone take is I am sorry to say. Not all drugs work for all of us.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I experienced light-headness, dissiness, and even fainting spells when I started taking blood pressure medicine, because my brain had become accustomed to the high pressure. I stuck with it, and after several weeks I was fine. I now take 5 mg of lisinopril per day. I had no problems with it when I was switched to it and have none now.

Question/Comment:

I was told I have right ventricular outflow track PVC's . This is easily controlled using high blood pressure pills. Has anyone ever had this diagnosis?

38 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have those but mine is due to a congenital heart problem

45 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

You are not alone... Both mom and myself has "Doctor-idis" and both of us our blood pressure shoots up. I really do have borderline high blood press without the medicine. I learned I could control it a little by taking deep breathes and letting it out slowly as they took my BP.

A good supplement for BP is Evening Primrose. It makes the blood 'slippery-er" and that helps the flow. Mine got a bit better afterwards.

To the lady that said she couldn't get her surgery... When my blood pressure when haywire several years ago, my doctor had me taking it in the morning and night, every day. She wasn't as worried when my BP started staying down at home at a normal amount and then went up at the office. Anyways if you have the chart showing how you are at home, it may help the doctors meeting you for the first time.

47 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

You can make a chart using Excel. Also using conditional formatting you can have the chart print in colors. Blue for low, green of in range, and red for your high readings. I do this for both my blood sugar readings and for my blood pressure readings. The doctors love it because they can see where the problem is.

Answer/Reply:

Yes, I have PVC's and it caused me to have dizziness and almost pass out. They put a holter moniter on me to track how many i was having per day. They would cause rapid heart rate and flushing of my face. I finally was put on a medication for anxiety called KLONAPIN. It immediatly helped my symtoms. I was convinced I was going to have a heart attack at the time. I have been on this medication for about 10 years. I was on a blood pressure medication at one time but I am not now. I really suggest you ask about "KLONAPIN" even if you dont think you have anything related to anxiety. I could not accept that diagnosis because I also have PVC's. But it helped the symtoms right away. So if you have similar symtoms it may be worth talking to your Dr. about it further. Please contact me if you think I can answer any other questions,

Answer/Reply:

Yes; I have that same problem. And PVC's would be controlled with high blood pressure medication as I am on it for that also, and also due to birth defect known as Severe Endothelial Dysfunction. I am on Atenolol or Tenormin I believe is the brand name. PVC's stand for Premature Ventricular Contractions and Atenolol does a superb job of keeping my heart beating normally as well as keeping my blood pressure under control although I have to take two other anti-hypertensive meds as well. I cannot even miss one dose without feeling it.

Answer/Reply:

I have had PVC;s since I was 28. I am 59 just stay on your pills you will be just fine.

Question/Comment:

Anyone on here have LVH (left ventricular hypertrophy) due to high blood pressure. And what medications are you on for it?

41 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

ATENOL0L

Answer/Reply:

I was recently diagnosed with LVH and am presently on Diovan for high blood pressure. I was not able to take Lisinopril as it caused my B/P to drop too low and caused extreme fatigue and weakness. It also caused a bad cough and I was "worn out" all the time. I'm not sure the Diovan is going to do the job,either- although it does not cause the weakness. My B/P is elevated in the morning when I awaken and goes back down after taking the Diovan. I tried taking it at night, but that didn't help, either. I'll be going back to the cardiologist soon to see if he has any other suggestions.

Question/Comment:

I have what is called intermittent HBP. One day out of the blue it blew the arteries in my nose. It is well controlled with linsinipril and furesimide which I have taken for about 3 or 4 years. The only problem comes when my BP goes really low like 98 over 60 or lower. (That is when grass turns yellow if you are mowing the lawn or people even glow luminous) I now know to eat something salty/drink fluids etc but it does get old to have this happen out of the blue, even infrequently. With medication I am usually at between 110 and 120 over 70 or so and at 63 I can't complain about that. They gave me all the heart tests and nothing showed up. Is it best to just keep some salt and water handy for when BP drops and thank my lucky stars.

64 year old Female

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I also was on linsinapril and it took my blood pressure too low and could hardly walk, felt weak so my doctor changed to simvastatin 20mg 1 a day with 2 proprananol and that is much better, I have very high blood pressure without meds, have had 5 mini strokes and my left carotid artery fixed, now the right caratid artery needs fixed. It is not good to fix your low blood pressure with salt. Ask you doc to lower the dose or change to a different med.

Answer/Reply:

it seems you suffer from "white coat " syndrome - when you go to doctors, hospital, dentist, you have an in built fear which results in elevated BP - they should ask you to sit quietly for 10 minutes to get used to the idea and then take it

Answer/Reply:

hi..I just read your statement on your high blood pressure.. seems like when we get old everything goes at the same time,.I discovered that I had High Blood Pressure this past aug when I went for my phy, never had it before. Was so high the girl did not want to tell me, was 185/100 I found out later by the dr. I always get terribly nervous when I go especially to the DDS. My heart pounds so fast I cant stand it. So I have been on Lisinopril since June 08. went yesterday and now I get adrenilin attacks and he put me on a strong beta blocker. It is scary I know how you feel. The best person to ask ques, of is the PHARMACIST-- The drs dont have very much knowkedge of pills found out. Now I have arterial leg problems and have to get a doppler scan on both legs/ I just turned 65 and I have many problems all at once.Hardly ever had to go to dr before in my life--now its all the time. Good Luck and dont worry. seems to make it worse I think..

Answer/Reply:

I'm so thankful to have found your question, and the replies. I have also had the same problem which just started a couple of years ago. I am 54, and have had high blood pressure off and on since I was much younger and on birth control pills. I was never on medication until just a couple of years ago when it wouldn't get under control. They put me on Lisinopril 10 mg. Same problem - when I go to the doctor, dentist or anywhere (even CVS) to have my blood pressure taken, it shoots up to as high as 190/110. They almost put me in the ER once because it was so high, but I wouldn't go because it always goes back down after I get home later or the next day and take it at home. I was going to have a face lift and they wouldn't do it because my blood pressure wouldn't go down, but after I would get home it would go back down. It won't go down at the doctor's office. I have just recently gotten it under control by intense prayer (I'm a Christian) several times a day, and meditation when I am going to the doctor or dentist. I realize that I am just hurting myself and made a decision not to do that anymore. It's hard sometimes because it has become such a habit, but you can control it if you really work on it, then it gets easier. It must be some kind of condition, but the "white coat syndrome" seems to make light of it when it sure feels much more serious. Thanks again for writing.

55 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

There really is a condition called "white coat syndrome" and I too suffer from it. Where I used to live, my docs knew that I have that condition. Since you seem to be taking your BP at home, keep a log and take that with you to your next doctor appointment. It'll go a long way to showing how your BP readings usually are except when you are around the "white coats." I do have to say too that you are right about controlling it yourself. Take several deep breaths after getting to the doctor's office and keep telling yourself that everything is ok. Stay in control of yourself and you'll be amazed at how your BP will react even around the "white coats."

47 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

I have learned that deep breathing (and meditation) calms the soul and lowers your blood pressure. Might try that next time you are waiting on the doctor and/or nurse. Also, see if they will check your bp again after you have been in the office for a few minutes.

55 year old Female

Answer/Reply:

130/74 at your age isn't bad and you probably have what my dr. calls situational high bp. What I would do is ask the dr. to take it several times during your appt. I find mine is lower after I've talked to him and he's checked me out and then I have it taken again when not tense. Shut your eyes and think of something calming like the ocean waves while they take it and this may help too. Try some natural supplements from Standard Process and see if this helps.

I have the same problem with my BP. My doctor has me monitor it at home and I keep a record and bring it with me to the doctor. That way he knows it's not always as high as it is at the office.

Has anyone heard of a blood pressure medicine making their skin blotchy? I have been taking Maxzide for over 15 years and my face is different shades. My face is lighter on the nose and cheeks, but darker on the forehead, outer cheeks near my ears and my chin. It looks like an hour glass. One of the precautions is to stay out of direct sunlight which I try to do. Please let me know if anyone has heard about this and what can be done to fix it.

Answer/Reply:

Hi there, I don't have the problem you are having, but when I read your post it reminded me about the time the Dr. put me on Norvasc. My husband takes it everyday and handles it well. He put me on it and it sent me to the emergency room with a full body rash. Not just a little rash either, big itchy, hot rash. I told the dr. when I was in his office I had heard bad things about it, and like always they poo poo'd me, it's all in my head. No, now its all over my body.
I also lake Lisinopril and metropolol, I seem to get along fine with those. I also take Hytrin. I just started on it. my bp was around 130/75,for a long time, the doc didn't like it, so he started me on Hytrin. Now my bp is 115/60.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

I took Maxzide for a short time and it caused many side effects. You should discuss your problem with a pharmacist and your doctor. It was my pharmacist who first told me to stop taking Maxzide and and my doctor agreed and prescribed a different medication.

Good luck!

I have been taking blood pressure medicines for 35 + years. Couldn't get the pressure down to near normal until my nephrologist put me on Diovan/hct, Pendil, and Coreg.
Finally my pressure is normal and sometimes below 120/80. My last reading was 110/67.

Try different drugs until you get the results you want.
Also you must exercise! I am 71 years old and female.

I take Lisinopril, HCTZ and Atenolol for my high blood pressure and avoid high potassium foods. I have never had a problem with potassium build up. This combo has kept my b/p nice and low along with slowing down my heartbeat. If you love to walk, avoid taking the lisinopril & HCTZ until after your walk. Also, don't get up quickly as it can cause lightheadness.

Benicar HCT did really well for me for about 2 years. My doctor just recently added Norvasc to be taken with it.
