Question/Comment:
I am a 57 year old male that has had a cervical fusion at C-4, C-5, and the C-6 and C-3 are also bad. The doctors used a bone out of my hip to do this operation. This was March of 1998. I also had two shoulder operations, one on left side was radical for rotator cuff and they cut 4 inches of the bicep tendon off, and cut a groove into the humurs bone and re-attached it. The right shoulder was for bone spurs, and degenerative problems. Also had the right elbow Ulnar nerve moved due to the bone impinging upon the nerve, a 7 inch scar and the pain is still there. My lower back, has 4 extremely bad disc, as in no disc. They have degeneratived and mostly gone, and so it's bone to bone. I worked over 25 years underground in a 42 inch high coal seam, bent over all those years. The doctors did a disoprhory< spelling..> anyway it's where they insert the needle right down into where the disc are supposed to be and they couldn't hold me on the table, used straps, with me sedated, trying to find out if I were putting on? Yeah, right? Now I'm on 60Mg MS-Cotin 3 times per day, and the pain stays in the 6-7 range, and now with this age thing, comes arthritis, and I ache and hurt all over. Almost unbearable. Tears roll down my face many times. If I happen to cross my arms and fall asleep, when I awaken 30-45 minutes later, it's the most horrible pain. I have to take as slow motion as possible and try to uncross arms, and hands and finally and slowly move arms and hands down towards side. Ever night is a nightmare. Up 3-4 times minimun in a 4 hour period. Can't sleep with wife, due to any movement is the most violent stabbing pain, I've ever had. All of the above is getting much worse, and ever day is a dread. The neurosurgeons and pain management clinics say they can't operate, and there is no help for me? My life is a living nightmare, and I think it will end soon. I pray for all of you, and wish, hope and pray the best for each and every one of you. Some can take it, some can't. I can't. Take care. PS: I have taken 15 mg of MS-Cotin 4 times per day inbetween the 60 mg's, but it's no effect that I can feel? In fact, I really don't feel like I'm getting any relief from the 60 mg's MS-Contin, but after taking all the Oxycotin, Percocet, loritab, Tramazone, Tramadall, and every other type and kind, I don't know what else to do. I have sever depression, panic attacks, and anixety, and so the doctors say that some of my pain is in my head. Funny, that's not where I hurt? Bt they could be right? Hope this helps?

I feel for the 57 year old male. Do not do anything drastic!
I am a 39 year old female. I do not have a fourth of the problems you have, but take 60 mg. MS Contin 4 times a day. I had a spinal fusion on L5S1, taking bone out of the hip as well. It never healed together and after 8 surgeons turned me down to try and fix it, because they didn't do the original surgery, I am in severe pain, where I cannot even walk to the end of my driveway without my cane, and not a block period. I also take neurontin and baclofen. They don't understand how bad the pain is. I live in my recliner. Most doctors don't understand that some of us are not drug seekers, we hurt, and it effects every day of our lives. The pain wakes us up, in my case, every 2-3 hours, and this has been going on for me since a work injury in 2004. I did get a neurostimulator, and that does help with my leg pain, and a small amount on my back. That was implanted in Nov.'09. It doesn't help me walk though. There are so many of us out there, we need to stand together and demand doctors to investigate our symptoms and take us seriously. We need real relief, not to be told that it is all in our heads. If they had to live with us for a week to see what we go through, they might do more to help us.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Sometimes pain increases and you may need a higher dose or perhaps you have become tolerant and don't respond as well to the dose you are taking. Morphine 100 mg is controlled release, meaning it slowly releases over time. You may need a shorter acting morphine or a different type of pain medicine to take in between to help with break through pain. Speak with your physician, or ask to be referred to a pain management specialist.

Question/Comment:
I have sciatic damage, had a fractured pelvic, damaged muscles in my left buttock, 5 bulging discs, piroformis damage from a fall down a flight of steps. I am on several pain meds, as well as antidepressants. However, I had the Doctors to reduce the medications because it was driving me more insane than helping. Although, I suffer pain, I would like to add- to try exercises, lavender oil and epsom salts, and things to relax your muscles to prevent spasms and excess pain. After all there is no cure and why not learn to live with it the best you can. I also have blood work every 3 months to make sure I do not have internal damage from the medications. Although I have suffered severe hearing loss- I do want to remain positive through all this as being miserable just makes things worse. Hope this helps.

I WENT TO A PAIN MANAGHMENT CLINIC AND THE DR. RECOMENDED A MEDTRONIC INTRATHECAL INFUSION PUMP , AND WHAT IT DOSE IS IT ONLY NUMBS THE MOST PAINFULL SITE IN YOUR BODY BY DELIVERING MEDICINE THRU A VERY THIN TUBE RT. TO THE SPOT, I WOULD WISH IT FOR EVERY ONE. GOOD LUCK ALL.
