Question/Comment:
To all the people who say that smoking the herb is perfectly harmless: sorry, but you are unfortunately mistaken. Cannabis may not directly cause lung cancer like tobacco does, according to studies, but it certainly does introduce all sorts of matter in your lungs that simply does not belong there. And a lot of it, because the cannabis smoke is often inhaled deeper and kept inside longer than cigarette smoke. Some people do it to the point that nothing is exhaled, meaning that all that thick smoke is absorbed in their lungs. This is extremely bad for you. When you mix cannabis and tobacco this is particularly terrible.
There is a much safer way to inhale the THC from marijuana and it involves using a vapouriser (vaporizer in the USA). Google it. Of course cannabis can also be eaten but dosage is problematic in that way. Not helpful for medicinal use. Small, clean hits from a vapouriser until you reach that place where you need to be is what I recommend.

Question/Comment:
I have been prescribed Cannabis and find one way to use it that helps with pain is to make an infusion, mix it with aloe vera gel, and rub it on. There are NO side effects. Not even the "high" from smoking or eating it! It's not good to eat it anyway if you have stomach problems, although I'm convinced the associated nausea is from having too much of it without other enough other things to eat.
I use a crock pot, and cook outside-it smells HORRIBLE!!-crumble dry leaves and any budlets that aren't quite big enough to bother with smoking, and add oil just to cover. Cook on low for about 4 hours and strain. I recycle wine bottles with corks for storage.
I believe there are about 13 states in which either a doctor can actually prescribe or just recommend use for patients.
I have also had problems with my regular doctor believing in the use of this herb. My 'other' doctor is conscientious and caring, and that clinic also has nutrition classes, grow classes and go over all the legal stuff to make sure we patients are within state laws when we grow and use this important medicine.

glad you found novel way of application for your pain using cannabis. not sure why it smells so 'horrible'..quite strange. also not so sure i understand why you have nausea using cannabis. that's a new one on me. i am wondering tho...the 'wine bottles'...you are...'recycling', if you are the one emptying them, then i would say there's the problem right there. wine?..AND cannabis?....???sounds like drowning something to cope, not management. sorry, i just hate it when folks say they have a down side with cannabis..just not gonna happen using cannabis alone.

Question/Comment:
I believed in herb for anxiety for years, but didn't realize how much it really helped till I stopped due to quitting smoking cigs/cigars. This eventually only led me to a prescription for Lexapro to manage anxiety and headaches. But I started bouts of insomnia then! I'm against the smoke part still, so I use it in recipes instead. I use less and have far more benefits and costs then manmade scripts. Funny how some raise an eyebrow to herb for helping you cope, but not to scripts used to help you cope. At least herb has been around for years unlike some medications we've become immune to after awhile. btw: I worked in labs and I'm too aware of human error in producing medications and waivers used to ship products. You should also use the same cautions in herb. Good luck, Feel Better! 44yr old female

smoking cannabis is not harmful as we are led to believe. many MANY studies show that only cigarette smoking leads to lung cancer, etc. Not one single case..ever..anywhere has anyone ever been dx'd with lung cancer or problems from smoking cannabis. in fact, it's now proven there are actually two..2..anticarcinogens in cannabis. however, for those who have quit smoking cigarettes..like myself as well, we now have the vaporizors. not that pricey, many sizes/brands and much healthier.

Question/Comment:
I was just hoping to find out how marijuana might affect the other medications I am. I have anxiety (PTSD) and I like the calming effect of the marijuana more than the feeling I get from taking xanax or valium. I don't have that drug hangover with the pot, I do feel more fatigue right now but I would be just sleeping all the time on a pill like those mentioned already. Does anyone know how marijuana might effect things like BP or Asthma meds?

Answer/Reply:
If you have asthma you would probably be better off cooking with it or making activated capsules. Smoke of any kind can't be good for you. www.thc-foundation.org has good info. Links to a great cookbook, info on getting a permit if you live in a state with compassionate use laws. Good luck.

I've had access to cannabis dispensaries for the last 3 years and it is definitely the best alternative to the harmful effects of pills and alcohol. Smoking period is harmful to anyone especially an Asthmatic and I lived with 1 who couldn't be around candles or cigs but smoked saying it helped with the nauseau from the Asthma inhalers & increased her appetite. I have HBP and take less medication when using cannabis at nite, but only a 100% indica which has more of a "body calming" effect compared to a sativa which has more of a "head effect" A vaporizer is the best way to go with long term use and a small hitter pipe is preferable when you go portable. Leave the joints to the 75% of smokers under 25 who put more in the air than their body.

Question/Comment:
I'm a longtime cannabis user (30 years) who had access to it interrupted during the 2.5 years I was in hospital/rehab/then home to recover from many broken bones and multiple surgeries. I became addicted to short acting oxycodone and longacting morphine during this time; still using MS Contin (just 30-60mg.day) but have been able to stop oxycodone completely thanks to getting my medicinal marijuana card recently and re-introducing marijuana to my daily intakes. Total success! I expect to use pot to quit morphine this coming year, as well. To me, it's a shame that EVERY doctor cant/won't prescribe pot to us chronic, severe pain sufferers (and anyone else suffering, for that matter : )

Answer/Reply:
I know what you mean. I was prescribed Lorazepam (mild valium) for stress/anxiety and to help me sleep. I asked my family physician to prescribe me cannabis instead. He said he didn't believe in it.
I prefer the effects of cannabis myself as well. It works instantly. It helps me sleep, and there are no hangover effects as well. Has no long term effects that I know of. Some studies even say they think that it may prevent cancer.

Answer/Reply:
I agree, I am living with Chronic Pancreatitis and am require to take 90mg of Methadone and 60mgs of Oxycodone. It is unfortunate that this nation does not have a nation-wide medical marijuana program. I have been doing my part on activism here in the state of Indiana however the law makers seem to just laugh off my letters and phone calls. I have found that the use of medical marijuana does help with the chronic pain. nausea, and helps to limit the amount of the break through pain medicine (oxycodone) that I have to take. The methadone I take as perscribed although I am able to limit the oxycodone and promethazine. The weeks before an appointment with the pain specialist is rough due to the chance of a urine test to check the levels of methadone and oxycodone as I am not allowed to have any amount of THC in my system. One would think that with the positive effects of medical marijuana that it would be available legally everywhere and those of us that use it should be able to do so without the fear of arrest or losing our perscription medication. Good luck with getting off of the morphine, I'm sure it will take some time but you will do it. I am thinking about moving to one of the states with a medica marijuana program. Check out www.mpp.org.
