What does it do?
This product is used primarily in the prevention of endometrial hyperplasia in postmenopausal women on conjugated estrogens and for secondary amenorrhea. It is synthetic hormone replacement for progesterone naturally produced in the body.

Question/Comment:
My gyn prescribed this for endometrial protection because of absent periods due to PCOS. I'm to take 400mg for 10 days every 3 months. I just completed the first cycle and the dizziness/drunk feeling was fairly severe throughout all 10 days. I had trouble walking and it lasted through the night to the following morning a couple of times.
I also take meds to sleep at night (Sonata, Rozerem and Valium). Is it possible for sleep meds to make the side effects of Prometrium worse? Thanks.

Dizziness and drowsiness are side effects of progesterone. These side effects could be more severe with sleep aids, as they have those side effects as well.

Prozestra is a supplemental progesterone cream that uses a wild yam as a source for progesterone. Prozestra is not regulated and approved by the FDA and it may not have a steady amount of progesterone in it. It is the same active ingredient as what you get with a prescription but in a much lower dose. Discuss your options with your physician to decide the best course of action for you with your medical history and other medications.

My doctor put me on this cause I'm pregnant with twins and they didn't want them to come too early. It really worked for me. That was at 24 weeks due to short cervix. But come to find out the one dr. who put me on it was totally wrong I did have a cervix. So really wasn't sure if I need the shots after all. But I'm 37 weeks now and the babies haven't come early. So I guess they really worked in my case.

I was prescribed this for break through bleeding. I was on premarin and it cause severe breast tenderness and the worst acne since I was 12. I have not had those side effects with this medication. So far, So good. I will have a mammogram after taking for 6 months to make sure there are no lumps as I have a family history of cancer. I only take it for 10 days per month so hopefully the risks are lower.

My doc says you need to be on progestin/progestrone if you are on estrogen/estradiol in order to minimize risks or heart problems. But all the "studies" ' have been done only with the patentable hormones like the ones made w/ horse urine (premarin/provera) - thus all hormones seem to get a bad rap...even the bio-identical hormones that can be compounded at a pharmacy so you get exactly the amounts your own bodiy needs (notice the others are only in specific dosages like my progestrone -tho bio identical only comes in 100/200 mg)
Also check your Vit D levels if you are concerned about bone loss (my reason for deciding to do the estradiol in the first place but now I also take a prescription dose of Vit D as my levels were very low
any comments on how long one can stay on hormones ? guess it depends on how your health is/family background of cancer/heart disease

I have been on HRT since age 45. I am now 71. I stopped taking them for 18 mos at age 65 - had hot flashes and got Parkinson's. (HRT is said to delay the onset of Parkinson's.) Went back on the hormones for several reasons. To stop hot flashes. to help bone density and hopefully to slow the progress of Parkinson's. Went on bio-identical hormones. Hot flashes returned. At present, I went back to Estradiol and Prometrium. That is what works for me. Although I did benefit from a Naturapathic doctor who raised my vitamin D from 500 to 5,000 iu
