Answer/Reply:

I took Lipitor and I had a horrible side effect. Your muscle enzymes are suppose to be between 100-200. Mine were OVER 1200. My doctor said that my muscles were breaking down, a very serious condition. I took control of my high colesterol by losing weight. If you experience ANY muscle problems, I suggest you talk to your doctor and immediately quit taking it until you know more about your condition. During the day, I was fine, but at night (about 30 minutes after going to bed) I would be walking the floors. My legs were so tight I felt like I was walking on stilts. It took about 6 months after taking lipitor for my system to get back to normal.

Question/Comment:

My hair is falling out and I have been on 40mg of Lipitor for 7 years. I have read that cholesterol is very important in the growth of hair so I will ask my Dr. to drop my dosage to 20mg and see if it makes a difference in my hair loss. Its not listed as a side effect but i truly believe Lipitor does cause hair loss.

Answer/Reply from iGuard:

Less than 1% of iGuard members report "grogginess" as a side effect experienced with Lipitor. No iGuard members have reported drowsiness or extreme sleepiness as a side effect of Lipitor. According to the Lipitor product labeling, sleepiness or drowsiness is not listed as a side effect of Lipitor at this time. If you continue have these symptoms, it's a good idea to make an appointment to discuss them with your doctor.

Answer/Reply:

I have never heard the complaint of "sleepy" on statins. The closest would be fatigue, usually in the muscles, but never "sleepy"

Answer/Reply:

I would quit taking lipitor immediately. Not only did my joints hurt, but I had problems with my legs cramping at night. During the day, I was fine. About 30 minutes after going to bed, I would wake up with severe leg cramps. I hurt so bad I couldn't feel my legs. This went on for months. My doctor finally took a blood sample. Your muscle emsymes are suppose to be between 100 and 200. Mine were over 1200. My new doctor that I went to later, told me my muscles were literally breaking down, and was very serious. It took about 12 months after I quit taking them to totally get out of my system.. Please listen to what your body tells you.

Answer/Reply:

I've never asked my doctor if that was Lipitor-related. I have only noticed this when my blood pressure (which is normally low) is lower than usual or if I've had more physical activity than normal.

Answer/Reply:

Regarding Lipitor: My doctor told me that I should take Lipitor just prior to going to bed at night. It should not be taken with other medications as it may work against some you are taking. You may want to give this a try and it may just give you a few extra night's sleep. Hope this helps.

I have been taking Lipitor for about 5 years now - no problems whatsoever. I take it at bedtime, so that may be why I don't notice sleepiness. It's been great for my cholestoral.

Answer/Reply:

My sister has type 2 diabetes and she was on Lipitor. She always was rubbing her legs saying they acked. My mother born in 1920 , in 2003 went through having a pace maker put in and a angyoplasty done. She came through with flying colors. Her at her age still puts around the house cleaning, doing dishes and enjoyed life and her great grand babies. Leaving the hospital they put her on Lipitor. We came home and she was doing well for the first week. She started getting weak in the thighs and complained of her legs hurting. We took her to her doctor. The Dr. said give her time. 2 weeks later we took her to her heart specialist. He said you know she is going to be 84, we said but this isn't mom. He just sluffed us off. One week later we took her to ER they admitted her and ran test, It was the Lipitor...they said it had to peak and come down. One day later my loving mother died. With a breathing tube, feeding tube and the Lipitor still in her. My sister quit taking it, she don't rub her legs saying they hurt anymore....but we sure miss our loving mother everyday....and it is all because of a medicine that was to help her. Now they advertise about the muscle weakness...a bit to late.

Cholesterol plays a vital role in forming the myelin sheath around nerve fibers. ( think of it as insulation on wires ) Cholesterol is important for proper neurological function.
