Question/Comment:

I am a 47 yr old female recently diagnosed with Type II. I was put on 24U Humalog x 3 (each meal) and 70U Lantus at bedtime. My sugar levels were still not decreasing. My diabetes RN attended a conference and upon returning suggested that I split the 70 units in two and inject 1/2 one one side of the abdomen and the other 1/2 on the other side. It started working almost immediately. It appears that large doses of Lantus may not absorb in the most effective manner.

Question/Comment:

Lantus does work but due to the cost and no insurance I had to quit using any medication. I hate to think what my numbers are art now.

Sir:
Please contact the drug company directly. They have a plan that may find you totally eligible for either free or very low-cost Lantus. This is the same situation I found myself in when placed on Lantus. Good luck.

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Please make an appointment with your doctor to discuss how Lantus or your other insulin is affecting your blood glucose control and the symptoms you are experiencing. There are many things that can cause pain and swelling and your doctor will be able to do a proper evaluation to determine the cause of your symptoms.

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Lantus is designed to provide a slow release of insulin in your body to mimic the normal steady release of insulin that occurs in a non-diabetic patient. Faster acting insulin are then used at meal times and in response to high blood glucose readings to mimic how the body releases insulin in response to food. If your Lantus dose is too high, it can cause your blood glucose to drop. You may need a dose adjustment or you may want to talk to your doctor about changing the timing of your Lantus dose to morning so that it works through out the day when you are taking in the most calories. Speak with your doctor, or perhaps see an endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes if you are not doing so already.

Answer/Reply:

I am a 44 yr old female using Lantus, 20U in a.m., but my blood sugar drops drastically each night also. No matter what I go to bed at - 300 or more, I'll drop 100+ points no matter what. I have bedtime snacks each night & still have to deal with this - can't stand it. I know exactly what you go through.

Question/Comment:

I am a 54 year old female, had a kidney transplant in July 2009. The anti rejection meds (prograft & cellcept) seem to increase my blood sugar level. I use Lantus daily, started out using 12 units - now I am up to 37 units daily. Does the anti rejection medication cause the blood sugar to increase? Also I developed C-Diff which caused my blood sugar level to go through the roof. How can you control your blood sugar when the additional meds cause your level to rise?

55 year old Female – Source: iGuard United States

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Increased blood sugar is a side effect with both of Prograf and Cellcept. Although they do have this side effect, they work well to help prevent the rejection of your kidney.

During a cold or other infection like C-Difficile, your body will produce hormones that raise your blood sugar level. All diabetics should have a "sick day" plan - talk to your doctor about how often you should monitor your blood sugar when you are sick and what types of adjustments you should make to your medications.

If you are concerned about your blood sugar control, speak to your doctor. Perhaps he would be willing to add medication that controls glucose levels in a different way than insulin. In addition, ask your doctor to refer you to a diabetes educator to help you review your diet and exercise habits. You may need to cut back on sugar and carbohydrates and increase exercise. Even walking a little bit more can help.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking lantus injections for approx. 8 yrs. Has anyone notice any skin discoloration that started after taking lantus over a long period of time? I am a 66 year old female---- Also my skin is very senstive.

67 year old Female – Source: iGuard United States

iGuard Answer/Reply:

It is not uncommon for there to be a rash or redness at the site of injection. Also, there can be a loss of fat tissue at the site, which can occur with any insulin. If this skin discoloration continues to bother you, please mention it to your doctor at your next visit so he or she can evaluate it.
