Question/Comment:
Was taking 1 Benicar 40mg with HCTZ and had severe dry cough. Was switched to Enalapril 40 mg HCTZ, and Atenolol 200mg daily. Still chronic dry cough, very tired, sometimes restless legs at night.
I've taken Tussionex 1/2 teas every 12 hours for cough for 2 years )only thing that works) and calcium zinc magnesium potassium combo for RLS and 1 multi vitamin.
Dr says Enalapril is different type of Ace inhibitor and doesn't cause cough.
Help no insurance needs low cost med with no coughing.

Question/Comment:
I've been on 2.5 mg of glyburide for 9 years and anapril for 3years. Earlier this year I had a case of itching so bad it wouldn't go away so I went to the doctor (I had recently changed doctors). He told me to stop the enapril immediately and sent me to a skin specialist. The specialist thought I might have lupus and did a skin biopsy. She too said to stop taking the enapril, that it was a severe allergic reaction to the combination of glyburide and enapril, saying it was a common problem. I had itching which would come and go briefly prior to that, but I never associated it to meds. I guess the Texas heat was just one too many and my immune system couldn't handle it any more. Since being off enapril, I haven't had any more problems.

Enalapril can cause a rash in some patients. Discontinuation of the medication usually improves the symptoms.

I am a diabetic on Metformin for sugar control, Gabapentin - nuropathy and Diclofenac for the pain of it, Crestor for high cholesteral, Vicodin and cyclobenzaprine for heniated disks and spasems, and a bunch more stuff - what should I be worried about more my kidneys or liver?

iGuard Answer/Reply:
ACE-inhibitors, such as enalapril, are used in diabetic patients for the kidney protection they offer, even without high blood pressure. If kidney function dips below a certain point, the enalapril would be stopped, but that is at the discretion of your doctor. Enalapril does not affect the liver. The acetaminophen in the Vicodin can affect your liver function if taken to excess or taken over a long period of time. Discuss your concerns about your medications and the roles they play in affecting the liver and kidney function with your physician. Your physician has your full record and your exact lab values, so he or she can tell you which of the liver or kidney is the more critical at this point in your treatment and if they are to be of concern to you when taking medications for the pain or other conditions.

Question/Comment:
I have had not one problem taking the enalapril. I have been on this drug for over 6yrs. I now have very MILD hypertension due to the fact that I have lost 55lbs. My Doctor has me on a very low dosage of 5mg which I started off on a much higher dose. She is working towards stopping the medication. Exercising, (NOT DIETING) just eating smaller/healthier portions, is a way of life. Without the extra weight you'd be surprised how that conditions your body, mind, and HEALTH.... Your health is not up to your Physician it's up to Y O U!!!!! Take charge it's N E V E R too late...

Has anyone had problems with restless legs with Enalapril? I have had very restless legs at night when I go to bed since starting this medicine, even though I am taking Mirapex for the restless legs and didn't have many restless leg nights before starting the Enalapril.
