I have to take motrin 800's or i cant walk. After reading that everyone is having problems with cramps, pains, and gout like syptoms ive deceied im going to ask my doctor if she can switch my meds because i believe it may be caused from taking triampterent blood pressure pills. 37.5 mg one a day.

Question/Comment:
I have been experiencing gout like symptoms that come and go in my joints. In the knuckle, toes, Ankle, back of the knee. The pain is so bad I've gone to the doctor and have had x-rays done and have found nothing. I take Lipitor, Norvasc, protonix, and accupril along with the Triamterene. Could it be the interaction of all these drugs.

Question/Comment:
When I told my doctor of the severe toe and leg cramps he acted like he never heard of this side effect and offered no solution. Needless to say I'm going to a new doctor and am looking for a better pressure alternative without the painful and debilitating side effects.Any suggestions?

Answer/Reply:
The Maxzide is probably pulling out too much water, potassium, and calcium out of your system. If your mouth is feeling dry at all, increase your water intake, stop all coffee consumption, and take a calcium citrate supplement. I hesitate to recommend a potassium supplement as that is a very touchy element in the body and it could be easy to overdo, however, bananas are a good source of potassium, so increase consumption of those as well. I was on Maxzide for several years, but after increasing physical activity on a daily basis, I no longer needed it. I had cut back to half a tablet every other day, so it seemed pointless to take such a small amount.

I have been having cramps in my feet and some in my legs at various times. Some I have for a few days at a time, at different times, then I go for a month with none, I am taking other meds and was not sure if it was one of those, but maybe it is the dyazide. I have to get up and walk around when these happen in my feet, and thought maybe it was just a part of my age, It is not something I can't live with since it is not continuous, but my worry is if there are long term affects from taking this medicine that I am not aware of, that would make me ask my doctor for something else., After reading and hearing all these warnings about what happens to people with these new drugs, I think maybe I would be worse off if I did change, Another concern is how all the drugs I take interact with each other. At this time, this is the only real problem, otherwise I feel fine each day,. I am taking, ;protonix, avapro, potassium, dilantin, levoxyl, as well ads iron, vitamin B and C, and calcium daily. .

Answer/Reply:
Try adding bananas to your diet. Usually the cramps are from low potassium levels and are a side effect of water pills. As long as I'm eating a banana or two daily I generally do not get the leg cramps.

Question/Comment:
Why does Maxzide cause muscle spasms if it has a potassium buffer? I also take Lipitor, Ost-Cal (500) daily, Tramadol (2 tab 3x/day), Buspirone (15 mg 2xday). Could any of these in combination cause the muscle spasms in hands, legs, bladder?

Answer/Reply:
I am also on Maxzide, Lipitor, and Buspirone but they told me that any time you are on a water pill like Maxzide you should make sure that you are drinking plenty of water because it will cause you to have muscle spasms.

Question/Comment:
I have been taking Maxzide and Atenolol togather for several years . Now my A1C is elevated . Could that be the reason? I'm 82 years old. Also is there a natural diuretic?

Answer/Reply:
There are several natural diuretics and you won't know how well they work unless you try them. Be sure to check your ankles, breathing, etc. to be sure no water buildup while trying this or have a dr. check. I recommend trying Standard Process. You can go online and they will be able to tell you what person in your area sells it or you can order from Dr. West who has a website. I get mine from a chiropractor even though I don't go to this particular one for treatments. It eliminates the shipping costs as he sells it at his cost.
