Question/Comment:

I am a 67 year old female. After months of losing weight, having constant anxiety attacks, memory problems, and feeling as if I existed in the twilight zone, and after monthly visits to my family physician because of the weight loss, I decided that perhaps the 50 mg. of Trazadone she had prescribed to me was the culprit. I started by cutting back to 25 mg. for about a week, and then simply stopped it altogether. It took about three weeks to feel like a normal person again. Making this decision to take control of my medication probably saved my life because I though about committing suicide numerous times a day the entire time I was on Trazadone, but held off taking action because I knew I could always make the decision 'tomorrow'. I'm glad I waited. I now take my 75 mcg. of the brand Levoxyl (had my physician write 'do not substitute' to see if taking the brand would help), 20 mg. of generic Enalapril and 5 mg. of generic Norvasc for high blood pressure, and 12.5 mg. Ambien CR to help me sleep. Go to http://www.aafp.org/20000301/1437.html and look at the list of drugs and their effect on older people, or query the internet for information on antidepressants or psychotropic drugs if a physician recommends them for you or your parents or relatives. It may save someone's life.

Question/Comment:

Besides being slighly groggy in the morning.. Trazadone is amazing.. i suffer from very bad anxiety .. especially right before bed and this takes it right away and then knocks me out and allows me to sleep soundly.. im only prescribed 50 mgs but it still works great. Could be because im a very petite person.

Answer/Reply:

I've been on 150-300 mg trazodone for several years. Black stool has never been a side effect. You'd best tell your doctor about this immediately.
