Question/Comment:

I have been prescribe Carafate after a gastric bypass that resulted in ulcerations. It makes a huge difference for me and is lowerig my pain (and healing the bad tissue from what they tell me). It can be cumbersome to time the liquid dosages, one hour before eating each meal, and once before bedtime. I take my vitamins with a protein shake upon waking, the my first dose of Carafate an hour later, and again an hour before meals. I take my nighttime meds around 8:00 pm & the Carafate at bed.

Question/Comment:

Does carafate, much like Pepto-Bismol, cause the stool to substantially darken? I perceive that is the case or I am in deep yogurt!!!

I can not find an answer to this on the WEB!

iGuard Answer/Reply:

There is no specific mention of stool darkening as a side effect of taking carafate. It does cause constipation which could possibly alter the appearance of your bowel movements. You should discuss your side effect with your doctor, as significant changes in the color of your stool could potentially be the result of other more serious conditions.

Question/Comment:

Do the symptions (stomach pain) return if 1 or 2 doses are missed?

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Sucralfate coats the stomach to protect it. If a couple doses are missed, depending on where you are in treatment, your symptoms of stomach pain could return.

Question/Comment:

I know I hve had the depression worsen with prilosec and wonder if this can do the same. Many others on this site named depression as a side effect when taking prilosec. Anyone?? Thanks;

iGuard Answer/Reply:

You seem to be concerned about how drugs like sucralfate and Prilosec affect depression. Depression is not a side effect of sucralfate. Sucralfate works mostly locally, which means it coats the stomach directly and does not go into the body. It should be separated from all other medications by two hours to prevent decreased absorption of the other medications.

81% of iGuard patients do feel the good effects of Prilosec outweigh any negatives. In our survey of iGuard members taking Prilosec there have not been any reports of depression with Prilosec. According to the Prilosec product labeling, depression has not been reported as a side effect.

Question/Comment:

I FIND IT REALLY HARD TO SWALLOW THE PILL, BUT ONCE I GET IT DOWN THEY DO WORK, ITS HARD THOUGH BECAUSE I HAVE TO TAKE 2 OF THEM 4 TIMES A DAY. YOU KNOW YOU ALMOST FORGET ABOUT THE SICKNESS FROM JUST TRYING TO SWALLOW THE HORSE PILL. BUT THEY ARE A MIRACLE PILL FOR SICKNESS, THAT IS AFTER YOU GET THEM DOWN.
