Question/Comment:

Is Belladona addictive?

47 year old Female – Source: iGuard United States

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Belladonna by itself is considered an herbal supplement. It has not been studied by the FDA and in high quantities or if touched directly, has serious side effects. In the prescription-available medications, belladonna tends to be combined with medications that have some addictive properties. While the belladonna may not be addictive, the medications that you would get with it can be. They are used for a variety of reasons, however, and when used under the supervision of your physician for short periods of time only when needed, they can be safe and effective.

Question/Comment:

My daughter was given belladonna-opium suppositories for pouchitis to relax her muscles so she would not awaken to use the bathroom at night. Although she does not use them and they are expensive, she had very active colitis and after surgery to correct it, it never was corrected.

Question/Comment:

I was given the generic form called Bella Alk/pb for spastic colon symptons. I do not take it on a regular basis. Only when I feel like I'm overly nervous or going out somewhere that I'm having anxiety about.

Question/Comment:

My mom had serious side effects when given Bella donna, could I have them also ?

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Genetics and how it affects the action of medications is a relatively new field of research - so unfortunately there really isn't much information available, especially for an older drug like Bella donna.
