iGuard Answer/Reply:
Thrush is a yeast infection in the mouth. It is caused by the yeast, Candida, and is most common in babies and older adults but can happen in anyone. It is characterized by white patches in the mouth and on the tongue. It is easily treatable with antifungal medicines. Inhaled corticosteroids, such as fluticasone (one of the ingredients in the brand name product Advair), can cause thrush in some people. It is recommended to rinse the mouth after using such medications to decrease the risk of thrush.

Question/Comment:
I am now on Advair diskus 250/50 twice a day and after about 30 days the last few nights just after my second dose I get a sudden nose bleed...also feeling jumpy and jittery, it has helped my breathing/wheezing tremendously but the jitters and feels like my heart is jumping around in addition to the bloody nose is hard to take. I am thinking about just taking in the a.m. and see if the jitters and nosebleeds stop.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Approximately 1% of iGuard patients taking Advair reported the following side effects: elevated heart rate, restlessness or tremor. These side effects can contribute to the jitters you are experiencing. Approximately 5% of iGuard patients taking Advair reported dryness as a side effect. This could be the cause of your nosebleeds. If your side effects continue or become more severe, you should contact your doctor.

Answer/Reply:
I don't know about nosebleeds but I was taking the Advair twice a day. Because of the high cost and lazyness I began taking it only once a day. My previous complaint of constant nausea disappeared. I now have the desire to eat and do not have the nausea and trying to think of something to eat that will sound good. I have also gained some weight which was another problem -- I could not get over 110 lbs. They did not attibute this to Advair so no one really knows unless you try.

Question/Comment:
I was diagnosed w/ COPD a yr ago when I had a bad lung infection and was given Advair. Since I got well, I really dont weeze but I do get out of breath sometimes.(Not that often though)My question is Should I still take Advair 2x/day if I really dont feel that bad? My breathing test results were very high and I can only tell my breathing is weird when I go to bed.I practice breathing OUT longer for a few minutes every night before I go to bed. I just dont want to add another medication if I dont have to. It did make my mouth dry alot and I felt like I had thrush a few times. Not pleasant! If I take acidophilus every day, it seems to keep thrush away.Should I take it or not? Help!

Answer/Reply:
I have moderate to severe COPD. It's a progessive disease. Everytime you get "bad lung infections" it damages your lungs even more. I take Advair, Spiriva, and pro air for emergency.
All breathing medications have several things in common. insomnia, nervousness and dry mouth, that can cause thrush. What doctors don't tell you is that breathing medications.....ALL breathing medications are addictive!
It could be when you lay down at night your lungs are using a different set of muscles for laying down. It happens to me every night.
I guess you know the golden rules for your COPD?
Stop smoking! yes I know its hard. cowboy it up and quit. that desire to smoke a cigarette will go away...wether you smoke one
Get your flu shot every year and Pneumonia shots ( you will need 2 for a life time)
Watch what Allergens are around you. dogs, cats, birds. birds are especially bad. but that is only 3 types. there are many more.
get into therapy to learn how to breathe CORRECTLY and proper Exercise to keep the muscles builted up
rinse your mouth out everytime you used any inhaler. If that isn't working, I take a half glass of water and put a tablespoons of Peroxide in there and gargle with it and spit. Not only will you not get thrush, it will help to whiten your nicotine stained teeth.
My last recommendation ? Pray, I don't care what you believe in or who you call on... but pray a lot.

Answer/Reply:
You need to rinse your mouth out after you have inhaled the Advair. If you don't rinse your mouth, you will get thrust. Read the pamphlet that comes with your Advair. It is written by the manufacturer to rinse. I use either water or mouthwash to rinse my mouth after inhaling the Advair. I have been on it for over 10 years and have not had any thrust.

Answer/Reply:
Ask your doctor. I'm on the 250/50 Advair twice a day, and when I saw a pulmomologist/sleep specialist he suggested I go to the lower dose Advair or just take one dose a day. I tried the one dose a day and my asthma symptoms came back. I mentioned it to my GP and he said I should definitely keep with the two times a day dosage since I haven't had to have a rescue inhaler since 2003 when I went on the Advair after a 3 day stay in the hospital with status asthmaticus.

I have COPD too and was diagnosised 10 years ago. I no longer have any health insurance and had to quit taking my Advair, I have found I do ok without it. When I have a flare up I use it. And as far as the thrush, didn't your health proffesional tell you to rinse your mouth well with water or brush teeth immediately after? That works and keeps thrush away. Hope this helps you in some way.

I have been using Advair for some time now and it is a preventative med. It does irritate your mouth and yep, you can get thrash in your mouth. I would check with my doctor before discontinueing the med. I am not crazy about some of the drawbacks but it sure helps my breathing, and also keeps me from having those breathing attacks too. I do not like taking any more meds than I have to also, but I have been in the hospital for this very reason and believe me, what you go through there is a lot worse than taking the Advair 2 times a day. Hope this helps you some.

You should never stop taking Advair. I have stopped on one or two occasions from taking Advair because I felt well. I started to weeze and cough. I still takes Advair two times per day. You should also contnue to take Advair, unless you doctor takes you off of it.

Answer/Reply:
COPD is not curable only by transplant. I have had it now due to inhalation of toxic fumes 5 years. I have 38% lung capacity; 5 years ago I had 48%. Use to play golf; the only place I can exercise is a swimming pool in chest deep water--no gravity. So I build up legs, arms and shoulders.
The stomach is useless due to 2 months of several steroids that Mayo's thought might stop it. Since I was not on the transplant list when I was 58, my Executive Order (Bush) NOBODY gets on the list for any transplant. No insurance company will pay for it. I call it the government's method to reduce costs in Medicare and Medicaid (kill the Boomers). I went on O2 at night immediately; later 24/7 last year. Due to short breath, the brain demands O2 so shortterm memory starts to go.

I'm using Combivent inhaler 4x a day and Advair 2x a day. I would still get out of breath so my dr. added Spiriva Handihaler once a day in the morning. It has helped a great deal for me.

I have severe COPD and have been taking Advair 2x/day for the last ten years.. having worked my way from 500/50 to a lighter dose (250/50). While I can sympathize with not wanting to take any medication which is not necessary, the advair is an absolutely necessary routine for me if I want to avoid inflamation in my lungs. I am careful to gargle after each dose and have never had a problem with thrush.

Answer/Reply:
I have COPD, emphysema. I take Advair twice a day. Your breathing may be "weird" when you go to bed because asthma is often worse at night for many. Nocturnal asthma is a term used to describe the asthma of patients whose symptoms strike mostly at night â often while the patient is sleeping. This is when pulmonary (lung) functions are at their lowest level, because circulating blood levels of epinephrine and cortisol â which protect the body against asthma â are at their lowest levels.
Frequent bouts of nocturnal asthma may indicate that a patientâs asthma is not being properly controlled.
Medications also are available in time-release or long-lasting formulations to ensure that a patient with nocturnal asthma gets the medicine they need when they need it most. Advair is a time release maintenance medication. You should take your evening dose as well. Also, it is very important to rinse your mouth after you inhale your Advair to avoid thrush. A quick swish will prevent a whole lot of problems. Hope this answers your question.

Answer/Reply:
Talk to your doctor about it. But I would consider moving to a lower dosage of advair and see what happens. I am on the lowest dose of Advair 100/50 (I think) twice a day. If yours is a stronger dose, you might be able to move down to a smaller dose. But don't do anything without talking to your doctor, first. Advair is a great drug, but sometimes you don't know how much it is doing for you. I take Advair year round for my asthma, as otherwise, I could only cut half a yard of grass before having an asthma attack. I could not do much exercise without an asthma attack. Even the short on breath with Advair, could be a bad attack without.

well I had a MRSA infection and phuemonia in both lungs in 205 had scarring in my lungs etc my pulmomonologist put me on advair and singulair with a rescue inhaler and i was better in terms of breathing I quit taking singulair to see if I would be okay without it. I seem to be doing okay I have cut back my advair to once a day but I think I am going to start back up on twice dailky as my lungs have started feeling not as good in the last three weeks I was off the advair for almost two month. I would talkw with your doctor who prescribed about cuting back. I would not recommend doing it on your own.

Answer/Reply:
I have had COPD and Asthma for 15 years now - 7 years ago my new pulmonologist prescribed Advair 250/50, Singulair, and Spiriva for me. I would never give up any of these 3 medications as they have helped me tremendously - I rarely have to use my Albuterol emergency inhaler any more. Before starting these 3 medications I coughed my head off constantly, wheezed all the time, and could not walk very far before I was out of breath. I have no side effects from any of the 3 medicines. I am not taking any chances of stopping any of these and reverting back to the way I was.
Be sure after using Advair to immediately wash your mouth out to prevent thrush. COPD is not going to go away-ever. Therefore, I would not even think of stopping your Advair. I religiously do mine twice per day exactly 12 hours apart.

I have COPD and take Advair. I had to discontinue using Advair in the evenings because it increased my heart rate too much and then I couldn't sleep. This also made me feel breathless.
So now I just take two puffs in the morning when I am well. When I get an exacerbation, I add the Advair at night to help me recover.

Answer/Reply:
I would encourage you to discuss your concerns w/your pulmonologist, pronto. My understanding is that COPD is not reversable, nor does it go away, but it can be managed. If you don't need Advair, you shouldn't be taking it because of the obvious reason & also because it is hard on your bones (osteoporosis).
I speak from personal experience. I take Advair 250/50 2xday (because my PFT's & doctors determine the need), Spiriva, oxygen 24/7, have to be vigilant about my osteoporosis (Actonel and regular dexascan to measure bone density) & have regular follow-up visits w/my doctors.
To prevent thrush, I rinse my mouth, thoroughly, w/water after taking the meds . For the dry mouth, I chew gum or carry a bottle of water w/me.
I have found that the American Lung Assn. has lots of good info and often go to that website for more info. Good luck & may God bless you w/good health.

Do you rinse your mouth out after taking the Advair? Also, I only give my son Advair once a day and it seems to work that way. Doctor's don't recommend once a day, but I think all meds are over prescribed...Pharmaceutical companies want their $$...

Just a suggestion on your sleeping problem or whatever. You may ask your doctor if you should take a overnight sleeping test? I had one done and it is very comfortable other then all the wires you half to wear, but you may have sleep apnia? Just a suggestion. And I certainly would not just stop taking the meds cause you are feeling better? This should be run by your doctor first....Again, just a suggestion. By the way I also have COPD, I use Oxygen 24 x 7 and a number of other ailments which is not the time to discuss. Good luck to you.
