Question/Comment:
I'm hoping to get a more definitive answer than I've been getting from my doctor (he's always vague)! Is there any accepted/standard length of time a woman should be on HRT? I've heard no more than 5 years. I've been on Activella for almost 10, and only recently (last couple of months) have I finally noticed that the hot flashes do not return when I discontinue the HRT for a while. This time it's been almost 2 months since a dose, and so far no hot flashes. Is it normal to (finally) stop the hot flashes? If so, can I safely discontinue the HRT therapy? I'm concerned about the heart-related risks if I discontinue it. I've heard that HRT helps protect the heart. I'd like to know if that's true, also. Thanks

Question/Comment:
I have been on the Combipatch for 2 weeks. I am experiencing severe mood swings, sadness being the most prevalent. I am also taking Bupropion and Lorazepam for anxiety. Is the combination of these meds something to be concerned about?

iGuard Answer/Reply:
The combination should be well tolerated. Any time hormones are added, there is a chance for mood swings and depression. Sometimes it can take several months to adjust to the dose. If it is unbearable, speak with your doctor and perhaps they can change you to different hormones.

Question/Comment:
I have already applied my second patch and am still experiencing hot flashes, I am on the lowest dose. How long should it take to relieve them. No other side effects.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Estrogen supplementation and finding the right dose is highly variable from patient to patient. Please discuss your concerns with your doctor so he can establish a baseline history for you and then continue to monitor the patch's effectiveness and make dose adjustments as necessary.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
CombiPatch will reach its steady state within 24 hours of applying your first patch. Your symptoms should start to be relieved fairly quickly after you start the medication. Hormone replacement therapy can cause emotional changes in some women. These changes can include the onset of anxiety. If you feel your anxiety is worse, make an appointment to discuss it with your doctor as quickly as possible.

Question/Comment:
I have been using this patch for over one year. In recent weeks, I have had severe itching, swelling, and redness at patch site. It takes a good 2-weeks before I can apply patch to same area. I will be seeing my gynecologist to discuss this matter!

Answer/Reply:
I never had any problems with mine. I usually place mine in the same area, however, maybe you might wish to switch sides. I place mine on my lower abdomen (stomach), right above my thigh area. It also might be good to stay away from the area you have been placing patch when it causes all the problems mentioned above. Good luck! It sure beats the pills and any other form of "staying sane" that I have encountered through the menapause stage.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
The recommended placement of CombiPatch is the lower abdomen, away from the waistline and breasts. You should rotate where you place the patch and not use the same spot for at least one week. Headache is a reported side effect of hormone replacement therapy. Your headache could be a side effect of the medication, or it could just be coincidental. Light-headedness is not a reported side effect. Pay attention to your symptoms and if they continue, let your doctor know.
