Drug Comments for Zyrtec (Cetirizine)

Comments, Questions, and Answers Show Newest | Oldest First

Question/Comment:

I have taken Zyrtec now for 7 years for Urticaria, which I would have every day, with some of the welts covering most of my arms or legs. I am mostly sympton free as long as I take one Zyrtec at least once a day. I have also noticed when I change my diet and get rid of most if not all processed foods and bread products I can stop taking the Zyrtec for long periods of time.

Question/Comment:

Zyrtec works well for me with no side effects. Because I take other medications I wanted to discontinue some. I tried going off Zyrtec thinking I was doing fine and no longer needed it. I immediately had a relapse of symptoms. I realized how well it really had been working and continued taking it.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Zyrtec for about 5 months now and it is working wonders for me. So far I have had no side effects. I also get Allergy shots as well. My doctor wanted me to take the Zyrtec in addition to the shots and my allergies have calmed down quite a bit.

Question/Comment:

I had previously used a prescribed Atrovent inhaler. It worked very well except for the localized dryness in the inside of my nose. Sometimes to the point of being sore and crusty, but it didn't seem to affect the rest of my body as far as tiredness or being jittery. When my daughter said how well the Zyrtec worked for her, I switched to the generic brand and have been pleased ever since. Seems Claritin in more expensive and I did not try that. I get my supply of Zyrtec at Sam's Club and it's comparable with the previously mentioned price at Costco which is a bargain. I do notice it slightly increases drowsiness taken along with some of my other medicine so it's best for me to take at night. I highly recommend it. Check on contraindications and drug interactions before trying any meds and educate yourself first. The only exception are life saving medication. Some doctors have a "let's try this" attitude and if you are on meds from another doctor they tend to not pay as much attention to those in their choice.

Question/Comment:

I have taken Zyrtec for 3 years or so. Now that it is OTC and cheap, I have not used it. I have problems with itching and hives and scratch until my skin bleeds and sometimes swells. I have not noticed much of an increase in these symptoms without the Zyrtec and just apply topical treatments like Caladryl. My Caladryl has an exp date of 2005 but still works to stop itching. Does anyone have comments on this? I now know that Lipitor and some of my other meds may contribute to the itching and am stopping Lipitor too.

Answer/Reply:

For several years I had hives and itching, but was able to control it mostly; however in 2003 I had severe hives and had to be hospitalized. I was treated with intraveinous prednisone, which barely helped. Then was placed on zyrtec 2 times a day, ranitidine 3 times a day and removed wheat from my diet which includes gluten and no more hives. When I reduce the ranitidine to 2 X a day I was still ok. However; reducing the zyrtec caused a minor instance with hives; the wheat was a biggy, my body doesn't tolerate it at all. So, the zyrtec (regular strength) will most likely keep the hive under control. Caladryl is very messy and everyone can see it.
