Question/Comment:

I have been on xanax for 15 years. My doctor says it is impossible for me to get off this med as I have been on it for so long it may take as long to get off of the drug. I am on 4 mg a day due to serious panic attacks that started when I was in my 30's. What would be the benefit of my quitting this drug? I don't want to nor do I have the time for the horrible withdrawals. I have gone off of the med before and was hearing noises and people singing...things that weren't there. I am really afraid to quit taking xanax and that increases my anxiety even more....

Answer/Reply from iGuard:

Sertraline may affect the metabolism of alprazolam - however this probably will not have any impact on your response to the two medications.

Answer/Reply:

well being an 8 yr user of xanax, i know it is highly addictive! i am now 11 days sober from dropping that drug, going tough active detox, i have experienced in the last week, shaking, sweating, sudo seizures, dry mouth, diareah, vomiting, insomnia, and heightened senses. this has been one of the most eye opening thing i ever did, thankfully i got support though NA. i dropped three of 6 medications i have been taking for years including klonopin and flexeril. i know i can no longer take any benzo because it is highly addictive.

Answer/Reply from iGuard:

Alprazolam (Xanax) is an FDA controlled substance schedule IV - which means it has a potential for abuse, but not as great as drugs in lower classes - heroin and cocaine are schedule I, oxycodone (Oxycontin or Percocet) is schedule II, etc.

As you can read from the many posts on this forum, people have both good and bad experiences with alprazolam. Withdrawals symptoms, if they occur, will vary amongst patients depending on their dose and how long they had been taking alprazolam.

Alprazolam can be safely used - however, if you are taking alprazolam, you should be aware of the abuse potential and work with your doctor to develop a plan to manage your condition while balancing the benefits and the risks of this medication. As with any medication, you should always talk with your doctor before stopping alprazolam.

Question/Comment:

Is alprozolam the same as Xanax? It makes me sleepy. I take two .25mg at night. I was allergic to Xanax because of the color. I am allergic to artificial color so they pharmacist called my doctor and he prescribed alprozolam.
