Question/Comment:
I have taken risperdal for almost ten years now. I needed it for my psychosis and bipolar episodes. It works wonderful. No thoughts or voices. I take my dose in the evening before bed. If I happen to forget one I will wake up in the middle of the night and be wide awake until the dose I missed takes effect. If I do not wake up then I am a basket case the next day. On edge to say the least. I have gained quite a bit of weight and the one side effect of Risperdal is the possibility of raising blood sugar so I get mine checked often. Kind of a double edged sword. It cause the weight gain and the weight gain and med causes an increase in blood sugar. Well I guess I can live with the side effects of taking the meds if it keeps me sane.

Question/Comment:
My 12 year old son takes Risperdal (maximum dosage) and Vyvanse (for approx 2 yrs) for ADHD (diagnosed at age 6). He has taken so many different meds I can't remember or name them all here. Our greatest problem is at home in the mornings before he has the meds in him. He is relatively good at school, but once he gets comfortable with a teacher/classroom he starts acting up. He has a violent streak that I don't know if it is in his genes or inherit to the ADHD. I had amniocentesis due to my age (gave birth at 39). My son was diagnosed as XYY (extra Y chromosome), which may or may not explain his violent streak. The Risperdal seems to be working; we give it to him 3 times a day, full dose in the a.m. with the Vyvanse, half a dose in the afternoons after school and a complete dose again at night before bed. He is active, athletic and appears to be a normal 12 year old, though went through a growing spurt last year, he is 5'9", 156 lbs, sz 11 shoe - (dad is big too!). I do worry that some of the side effects from the Risperdal may not be evident as they could be side effects of the Vyvanse, traits of ADHA or the XYY genetics or just normal preteen characteristics.
As parents of children that take meds continuously for ADHD, ADD, Bi-polar, etc. we must stay tuned in and aware of our children and how these meds may be affecting them. Communication and education is essential. Read everything you can get your hands on, talk to doctors and friends with similar issues, and then try to make the best decision for them you can.

Question/Comment:
Has anyone experienced "negative thinking" since taking risperdal? I now worry about EVERYTHING and think that horrible things are going to happen to the people that I love.

Answer/Reply:
I have been on a 1 mg dose for 5 years. I used to take 1/2 in the am and 1/2 at bedtime. I was not sleeping well and was tired in the mornings. My psychiatrist suggested taking the full mg before bed and this has worked out very well for me. I was afraid of the weight gain side effect and we, the doc and I, are trying 1/2 mg every night now. I'm doing ok, not losing my pot belly, but I would suggest talking to your doctor to find the right dose. 1 mg is not much. I have several patients who take 10 mg or more a day.

Question/Comment:
Risperdone has helped me alot since i've started takeing it about two in a half years ago. I have remained stable with my thinking and depression. Even through the meds have some side effects the good out way the bad. My family have noticed a diffrence in my mood and thinking skills. The only thing that I feel is bad about takeing the meds is the weight gain. But i've found if you excrise a couple times a week you can pretty much keep that under control. And yes, praying over all medacation before you take them all ways help. At lease it does for me any way.
