Question/Comment:

I Like asacol and have been taking it for about 5 years. Recently my doctor suggested I switch to colozal and I got very ill from it, just like I had full blown ulcerative colitis without the bleeding. Went back to asacol and was better within a few days.

Question/Comment:

Ten days into taking, I suffered from headache, runny nose, dry heaves, fever, chills elevated heart rate, very ill. Misdiagnosed as a kidney infection. Then liver enzymes elevated, lupus like swelling & excruciating pain in knee. Finally after 4th visit to ER the DR told me to STOP Asacol. Within days my symptoms disappeared, I think it could have killed me had I not stopped.

55 year old female, lymphocytic colitis.

Question/Comment:

I use Canasa for UC and have been trying to buy it in Canada since it's so expensive. In Canada they use Salofalk and I'm trying to find out if they are the same. I know Salofalk is NOT the generic for Canasa (there is none yet), but hesitate buying it until I know if it's the same as Canasa. Does anyone know?

Answer/Reply:

I too have been buying Salofalk in Canada and did ask if it's actually the generic for Canasa (it is not). However, it is Mesalamine and it has worked for me. I start to use it when I feel the startup of my UC and continue nightly until it feels normal. Just like Canasa I don't stop all at once, but taper off as my doctor had told me to do with Canasa. I am going to check online for the comparison between the two. Salofalk is made by Axcan Pharmaceuticals in Canada, but I forgot who makes Canasa (probably the U.S. mint). I'll get back to you when I find out. Sylvia

Answer/Reply:

This is Sylvia again. Axcan Pharmaceuticals makes both Canasa and Salofalk so I e-mailed them to ask how similar both are even though I know that Salofalk is not the generic for Canasa. I just sent the e-mail, so I have no news yet, but you too can go to www.axcanpharmaceutals.com and request their advice. I know Salofalk works for me and it's so much less expensive if you buy it thru Canada. You can go online to Canadian pharmacies and compare prices. I use 1000 mg which costs $165. but I think I noticed that 500 mg. was $99 for 30.
