Question/Comment:
Fatigue; hand and finger pain (can't open jars or cut uncooked veggies); hair loss at crown; short term memory loss/forgetfulness; difficulty getting in & out of car; sitting to standing; back and shoulder pain, pulling sensation in legs, at night...Feel like a sickly old lady!
When taking 10 mg, I did not notice any symptoms. Dr. increased dosage to 20 mg (he did not see enough progress on lower dose). Yes, my numbers have improved, however, I do not wish to live in agony...Quitting meds tonight!

Question/Comment:
I seem to suffer from extreme fatigue and exhaustion. I want to sleep all of the time and if I do nap, I can sleep for 2-3 hours and still be wanting to sleep by bedtime. Is this a side effect of lovastatin? My blood tests are normal.

Answer/Reply from iGuard:
When surveyed, about 5% of iGuard members taking lovastatin reported fatigue as a side effect. If this side effect is still concerning you, you should discuss your concerns with your doctor.

Question/Comment:
I am a 74 year old female on lovastatin. I have been on it for about trwo years.I have experienced muscle pain starting in the arms. My pharmacist recommended the COQ10 and this has been of great help to me. I take 100 mg of COQ 10 daily. The lovastatin has really helped my cholesterol and the pain is now negligible and no longer a factor.

Question/Comment:
My 70 year old mom has been in Lovastatin for a year or more and about 5 weeks ago had rapid onset of debilitating muscle weakness. She went from doing yard work to barely able to walk even with a walker. Dr says all blood tests have been normal and neuro work up was normal. Dr beleives it may be attributed to side effect of the drug. I have read tons of online content but cannot get any idea of when, if indeed it is attributable to the drug, she might start to improve. She stopped taking it about 4 weeks ago with no improvement yet. I guess when people get better, they quit blogging. I can understand that but does anyone have any idea when we can expect improvement?

Was on Crestor and could not move my left arm because of severe muscle pain. Doctor put me on Lovastatin, but still had some pain, so I started taking an anti-inflammatory drug. After a few weeks I started a senior aerobics class where we exercise all the muscles. Rarely take the anti-inflammatory pill anymore as it caused stomach problems. Can now move my left arm in all directions without pain. Believe the exercise helped me more than anything. Talk with your doctor about doing moderate exercises 2 to 3 times a week.

Based upon your description, it was probably the ststin drug since they are nortorious for inducing debilitating muscle weakness.
You may be interested in current research showing higher cholesterol levels associated with longevity in the 70-90 age group. Cholesterol is the building blocks to cells and makes repairs to tissue and nerves. Its vital to the elderly.
Time to recover from statins varies. Some people begin to recover right away. Others take weeks to months. While some have permanant damage. Cholesterol deficiency can be a rough road for Seniors. I hope your mother is improving.

Hi I am a 50 year old female cardiac patient. I took lovastatin (a kind of generic brand for lowering cholesterol medication) for a couple of years.I started to sleep alot and my body started to become weak where I couldn't stand for any amount of time. I didn't relize it was the medication that was doing it till I landed in the hospital. My doctor asked me did anything like a change in my medications happen recently, and it turned out my pharmacy company changed suppliers about two months ago and thats when I started to have muscle aches all over weakness, I was so tired all the time.Slept for hours at a time. He wrote me a precription for Lipitor (name brand) I changed immediately to Lipitor and I have been on it for about amonth. I feel better and my muscles are not bothering me I can actually stand and I am not weak. I don't take longs naps anymore. I 'm not tired as much. I'm so glad I changed. Because I felt so bad and I couldn't figure it out. If the pharmacy didn't tell me they changed suppliers I would of never knew what was causing it! I Feel So Much Better Now!!!!

Question/Comment:
I discovered the hard way about an undisclosed side effect of Lovastatin. After taking a small dose of the medication for several months, I began to experience joint pain akin to gout in my lower extremeties.
Toes, knees, tarsus, and ankles would seem to take turns aching and I turned first to Indocin for relief, and later to hydrocodo just so I could walk without painful limping.
I experimented by cutting back to two pills a week on Monday and Thursday nights. My last pill was on a Monday and during the day Tuesday I was nearly crippled by the pain, walking up and down stairs like a small child -- holding on tightly to the railing so I would not fall.
In the two weeks since that last pill, I have experienced no joint pain whatsoever after being cursed for five straight months with the affliction. Two days ago, I played basketball.

Your description of side effects from a statin is classic. Very typical. I see your story repeat itself 1,000 times over.
