Drug Comments for LEXAPRO (ESCITALOPRAM)

Comments, Questions, and Answers Show Newest | Oldest First

Question/Comment:

I started out on 10mg/day and really didn't feel much improvement. I did notice in the first week that when I would take Lexapro in the morning I had to have a little something to eat with it or it would make me feel a little queazy. I didn't feel much improvement until I was upped to 20mg/day. Fast forward a month from the dosage increase and I feel great.

It took me a long time to ask my Dr. for something to help me with my depression/anxiety. I've never tried other drugs for this issue...but I am glad this drug is out there. I've lost 25 pounds and my depression/anxiety are much improved.

Even with all the stuff piled onto my plate I feel calm, relaxed, I sleep well, and lets face it...25 pounds off my butt doesn't hurt either. :)

Question/Comment:

I have been on Lexapro for over 4 years. I take 10mg each morning. I was wondering if any one has sleep issues with taking this? I have tried several over the counter products and herbs. I do not want to take Lunesta and Ambien. I want something natural. I have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep.

I've been on numerous antidepressants since l986, some better than others. So far on the 2 1/2 months on Lexapro, I've done well. My doctor decided for some dumb reason that I was displaying bipolar symptoms (in his 3-minute 3-month visits) so he put me on Serequel 2x a day. I about went crazy on--that was when I could wake up long enough to feel anything. Stay away from it unless you are dx definitely bipolar.

Question/Comment:

I've been on Lexapro for over 5 years now, and when I tried to get off of it "cold Turkey" I thought I was going to loose my mind....So i bought a pill splitter and started taking 1/2, and that seemed to work for a while, but now I am back to 1 twice a day...My Dr. says that I can take 3 a day but I have to limit myself to two...they make me sleepy but they do the trick...

Is there a generic for this? I can't afford it. I have a prescription for it, though, and havne't taken it. I went to something else, but I wonder if Lexapro would be better?

Answer/Reply:

I heard that there was not a generic Lexapro, the closest they have to Lexapro is Celexa, which is almost identical to Lexapro. From what a pharmacist told me Celexa lost it's patent so they took the ingredient that worked in Celexa and renamed it to Lexapro, they call the two drugs a mirror image of each other. And Celexa is on the $4.00/mo. list at Wal-mart.
