Question/Comment:
I use Imitrex injections and I feel like they do not help my migraines as well as they have in the past. I was given the choice of injections because when I get migraines, I usually have an upset stomach. (Need I say more?) I also have sensitivity to light, loss of peripheral vision and flashes of white light. Some of my headaches are so severe that they can last for a week, 2 injections does not get rid of my headaches. I would like to switch medications but I feel like nothing helps anymore. If anyone has any input, I'd love to hear it.

Answer/Reply:
Are you working with a neurologist on your migraines? I know I have unusual migraine symptoms that are similar to cluster headaches as they tend to happen in clusters (however, unlike cluster headaches, my symptoms do not happen suddenly, as I feel my migraines coming on, and although they are excrutiatingly painful, my understanding is that cluster headaches are intense, sharp pains that last for a series of hours, days or weeks).
To stop the cycle, my neurologist has given me beta or calcium channel blockers for just a few days and it stops the cycle. So, if you are not getting the relief you should feel I would check out a Neurologist, or if you are already working with a neurologist with no results, find a new one. I hope you find some relief, as I know how debilitating migraines can be (I am light, sound, touch sensative when I get mine). Hang in there!

Question/Comment:
At first, imtrex did help my headache for several days but now, no matter how often i take it, it doesn't seem to work anymore. I should contact my neurology doctor soon.

Question/Comment:
I started using imitrex injections around 1993. When I started with Imitrex, there was no maximum shots. By 2000 my doctor took me off from imitrex because I had built up a resistance to it. (I could not take the pills as they did not get into my system quick enough to deter the more serious migraines) I started back on the injections in 2005, but by then the maximum amount of shots I could take were 2. When I get the more serious migraines they involve blindness in my left eye, with all the other symptoms. I also suffer from clusters and hemiplegic migraines. If it wasn't for the imitrex I don't know what I would do. They do help.

Question/Comment:
I used to take Imitrex an amazing amount - it was a miracle drug for me because I got migraines about 3 or 4 times a week, especially with the onset of pre-menopause & into menopause. My insurance only covered the one prescription a month & I would go to Mexico (living close to the border) & buy more for about $20 for 16 pills.
Then I heard about Topomax, prescribed off-label as migrain prevention. It is actually approved as an anti-seizure medication. Now I only get migraines about once a month. The dosage is variable.
