Answer/Reply from iGuard:

There is some evidence that drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice can prevent the breakdown of lovastatin or glipizide which could lead to higher levels of these drugs in your body and an increased risk for side effects, especially if you are taking a high dose of these medicines to begin with. The product labeling for lovastatin warns against drinking more than 1 quart (four 8-oz glasses) of grapefruit juice per day, but there are also some studies that say drinking one glass or one whole fruit can produce the interaction. It is best to talk to your doctor about whether he or she feels it is safe for you to continue to eat grapefruit. You may want to talk to your healthcare provider about lowering the dose of your medicines or switching to medicines that do not have an interaction with grapefruit. If you absolutely can not stop your grapefruit craving, try to minimize the amount you eat or drink, and wait a few hours before or after taking your medicines before eating your grapefruit.

Question/Comment:

I have been taking Glipizide 5 mg for three months now. All of a sudden I get hives everywhere. My doctor said that I may be allergic to one of the fillers, especially since my last prescription was filled in two parts - 25 pills from one manufacturere and 5 from another. The doctor and I went over everything I did and ate and there is nothing else it could be. I don't know which manufacturer's pill has caused the reaction because they were placed in one bottle and I only have one pill left. How do I get info on fillers from the possible manufacturers? My drug store won't help and I've been online for 3 hours trying to find out on my own.
