Question/Comment:
I was recently started on Enablex for an overactive bladder. I think the medication has helped the leakage and frequency problems somewhat. However, despite the fact that I take a daily diuretic (Dyazide), my feet and legs have become badly swollen, causing me to gain about ten pounds (so far) and making it painful and uncomfortable to walk. In addition, my urine flow has been greatly diminished as to volume and force. I am seeing a new primary physician tomorrow in order to address this problem but I would like to know your opinion. Are the Enablex and diuretic working in opposition to one another or is there another reason for the edema?

Question/Comment:
Was using bathroom every 10 minutes, saw a urologist. After several tests, he said it was overactive bladder, put me on Enablex, worked, but constipation so severe, I thought I would need hospitalization. When I returned, he put me on Vesicare, and it is perfect for me, am 61. I can wait much longer, sometimes for hours, can go on bus trips no problem. Occasionally I wait too long, but not a problem. Hope this post helps someone. Oh, I only wear panty liners, and I do have a problem with frequency when I have a UTI.

Re: constipation due to medication-I also had a severe problem until I discovered the new Fiber One foods. I eat the cereal in the morning (which gives me 51% of the daily requirement), a Fiber One granola type bar and Fiber One yogurt during the day. They even have pop tarts and muffins, pancake batter and a chocolate or strawberry shake. This food has been an answer to my prayers-no more laxatives or suppositories or enemas. Try it, I promise you it will make you a new person!

Saw a urologist for over active bladder and was put on Vesicare. I could not tolerate the medication for several reasons. My doctor suggested altering my diet (i.e. caffeine, sugar, spicy foods). I now can sleep for 6-8 hours during the night and urinate less frequently during the day - no pads. I'm 68 years old.

Question/Comment:
I was diagnosed as having 'ADULT LAZY BLADDER SYNDROME.' I have also had an enlarged Prostate for many years long before the Lay Bladder diagnosis. I have the usual problems with urinating associated with BPH. starting and stopping or dribbeling, but I never have incontinence. I never leak, but I have a frequency problem, day and night. I'm an old guy but this has been going on for years. I've taken Avodart for over a year with no help. I took Proscar also with no help. No Urologist I've seen can answer my question which is....Am I wasting my time trying medications to reduce prostate size or is the lazy bladder syndrome really the cause of my urinating problems? 92 year old Male.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
It is very difficult to determine what is the cause of your urinary frequency as both conditions could be contributors together or individually. This has been the challenge for your doctors as well. If you feel the Proscar is not making a difference you should discuss your concern(s) with your doctor or urologist and make a joint decision on how to best manage your BPH and bladder symptoms.

Question/Comment:
I have MS which has caused nerve damage over the years so that my brain doesn't cause my bladder to empty more than half way. The nerves telling the bladder to squeeze just peter out after a 1/3 to a 1/2 of my bladder is emptied. This causes 2 problems; 1) I have troule getting started and once started I have slow flow, and 2) I have frequency because effectively my bladder is 1/2 to 1/3 its normal size. The urologists want to give me drugs to increase the neurostimulation of the bladder muscle, which causes breakthrough neurogenic pain (a symptom of the MS, and the reason I take tegretol and pregabalin). Any suggestions?
