Question/Comment:
58 Year Old Female
When I first began menopause a few years ago, I tried all the natural remedies because I didn't want to take yet another pill as a cure-all but nothin worked. Finally I gave in and asked my OBGyn doctor to prescribe something. He knew I was somewhat opposed to taking anytning and prescribed Activella (low does 0.5mg,0.1mg). I've been using same for about 3 years. Since I begam taking this drug I don't have any episodes of hot flashes or any sweating incident, especially the night sweats. My only concern is taking it on a long term basis. Each time I try to wean myself off, the sweats come back with a vengence. I continue to take the medication as the positive effects far outweigh the negative ones. Ultimately, I would highly recommend it.

Question/Comment:
I am 36 I had a complete Hysterectomy at the age of 33. I've had the nasty hot flashes. I still have them sometimes but not as severe now. Now Im having night sweats and constantly feel like Im hot even sitting in an A/C place. I take Estradiol HRT. Taking such meds scares me due to all the side effects and the long term effects. When I try to stop taking the HRT I am miserable. I also take a anti-depressant. I guess Im just looking for some input on menopause from another womans perpesctive. If you have any info to share I would appreciate it.

Answer/Reply:
I had the worst hot flashes in the history of womankind. I didn't have flashes, I had mind-numbing 24 hour a day drenches. I tried every HRT out there in every dosage and every manufacturer and kept getting worse. My husband did research and discovered bio-identical hormones. Since starting them, my flashes are gone, my anxiety has subsided, sleep is better and life is becoming normal again. Investigate them, they might work better for you. I also take Pristiq 50 mg by Wyeth which is for menopausal women. Alleviates depression and anxiety and they say it helps with hot flashes. To find a doctor that believes in bioidenticals I had to call dozens and dozens of doctors in my area. Best thing I ever did and since its natural your body easily metabolizes them with little to NO side effects. Good luck!

Answer/Reply:
I am 53 have had a hysterectomy since 1991, went through all the hormone replacement therapy from patches to pills to creams nothing worked. I even tried vitamin supplements for HRT, didn't work, after all the scares of HRT I finally just stop taking it all. At first I thought I would go crazy waiting until all the medicines were out of my system but it was worth it. I still occasionally have a hot flash or night sweats but getting off all the medicines was worth it. I haven't taken ANY kind of HRT for around 9 years. Talk to your physician about stopping all HRT's you might find you will feel better I do.
