I am 74 years old, started using Sertraline in June. I have been gaining weight rapidly. Usual weight is 135, I weighed in at 150 last week during a physical(Nov) I feel miserable, can't wear most of my wardrobe. Need guidance on the weight gain. Is this a symptom of Sertraline?

Question/Comment:

I am 48.I've been experiencing forgetfulness for 9yrs. I lived in a home that had black mold in my bedroom right near where my head laid, for about 5yrs. until we moved out. I told my Dr. and he just ignored me. I forget directions to friends homes, taking my meds. on a daily basis. I can't remember dates, like Dr. appts. I miss those often even though I write them on the calendar. The list goes on and on. Is there any way to medically check for black mold effecting the memory? My lungs are ok.

Answer/Reply from iGuard:

Mold generally causes allergic symptoms or lung problems. People who are sensitive to molds may experience symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation when exposed to molds. Some people may have more severe reactions to molds such as fever and shortness of breath. Immunocompromised people and people with chronic lung diseases like COPD are at increased risk for opportunistic infections and may develop serious fungal infections. Signs of serious fungal infections include as fever, chills, cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest or joint pain, unexplained weight loss, unexplained tiredness or a general feeling of being unwell. If you have any of these symptoms of infection, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Although the symptoms you listed are not commonly associated with exposure to black mold, they are concerning and you should follow up with your doctor about them if you haven't done so already.

Question/Comment:

Often this is caused in younger persons due to stress. Stress tends to effect memory along with a lack of at least six hours of sleep per night.

Answer/Reply:

I am 67 years old and in fairly good health and very active. I have a memory problem similar to yours in forgetting things. I forget to take my meds also and if not for my wife would not take them half the time.. I also forget things within minutes of having done them. I have been told that medications sometime help to cause this problem. I am much older than you so this is also a factor I imagine!!! I am on four meds at the present and that includes Requip and an antidepressant, so I wonder if that is causing some of the problem??
