Question/Comment:
I have been taking Effexor XR, Wellbutrin XR, Seroquel for about five years and then about two years ago my doctor added lithium (900 mg day). This past weekend I was at a convention and suffered what others said was a seizure. I never ever had any in the past and this is new to me. I do not remember anything that happened and was told it took minutes before I came around vaguely. Would these meds cause it even after years of taking them?

iGuard Answer/Reply:
You should be seen and evaluated by a neurologist who will be able to better assess the cause of the seizures and how to treat them.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Call your physician as soon as possible to describe your reaction and see if he wants you to make an appointment for follow up. Since your symptoms sound serious, you may want to page your physician or call the 24 hour "covering service" . Since it sounds like you are having an allergic reaction, you should stop the medication, but try to get in touch with your physician as soon as possible and make sure he is aware of the symptoms you had while taking this medication. Also, make sure your pharmacy has a record of your reaction so that future prescription medications can be screened for possible allergic reactions.

iGuard Answer/Reply:
Fluoxetine can cause either weight gain or weight loss. However, more iGuard patients taking fluoxetine report weight gain (about 5%) compared to 1% of patients of patient taking fluoxetine who report weight loss. Many patients take fluoxetine for long periods of time without additional side effects. However, when taking fluoxetine for a long period of time, it is best to continue making appointments with your physician for regular check-ups.
