Cholesterol-lowering Medications May Increase Risk of Confusion After Surgery

A recent study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests that patients who are 65 or older and taking a type of cholesterol-lowering medication called a "statin," such as SIMVASTATIN, may have a higher risk of confusion or delirium after surgery than patients who do not take statins. This change in mental status may make your recovery from surgery difficult and increase the length of your hospital stay.

What does this mean?

If you are taking simvastatin and going to have surgery, talk to your primary care doctor and your surgeon about whether or not you should continue taking your cholesterol-lowering medication up until your surgery. Your doctors may want you to stop taking simvastatin for a short period starting a few days before your surgery.
